USA, ME: The Send Brewing Company ready to open in Knightville within the next few weeks
|
Preparations for the launch of The Send Brewing Company are wrapping up. Owner Cole Corbin hopes to open his Knightville brewery and restaurant within the next few weeks, Portland Food Map reported on December 18.
The Send will have their own IPA, pale ale and stout on tap as well as Sapporo and an additional guest tap—house-made Japanese-style lagers will eventually be added to the tap list. Chef Jayde Miller will be serving a menu of Japanese comfort food including onigiri, fried chicken, curry korokke, gyudon, daikon salad. Miller is a graduate of Johnson & Wales and spent a year living in Japan.
Corbin worked for 8 years at Maine Beer Company initially as a brewer and then as the director of brewing operations and the technical director for the Freeport-based brewery. He’s also worked as a bartender and prep cook at Mast Landing and Knighthawk’s Kitchen. Earlier in his career Corbin was an aerospace engineer at NASA.
The 50-seat space retains the same layout as Foulmouthed Brewing which previously occupied the building. It now features a neon/mural installation co-created by David Johansen (aka Neon Dave) and Jill Perry from Third Bird Creative.

USA, MA: Cambridge Brewing Company sells brand to Castle Island Brewing
|
Cambridge Brewing Company's beer isn't going away after all, Wicked Local reported on December 18.
The Kendall Square brewpub, which announced it would close after 35 years in business on Dec. 20, announced Wednesday on Facebook that South Boston-based Castle Island Brewing Company has acquired the iconic Cambridge Brewing Company brand.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
When Wicked Local recently interviewed Cambridge Brewing founder Phil Bannatyne, he noted at the time that "there may still be CBC beer in the future,” but was unable to elaborate further.
But now it's official.
According to the Facebook post, Cambridge Brewing began partnering with Castle Island earlier this year to help meet demand for its legendary Amber Ale and Flower Child IPA.
The post states: “When CBC founder Phil Bannatyne decided to retire, we received an overwhelming response from the public asking us to continue making our beers somehow. Phil reached out to CIBC with the hope that CBC’s legacy could live on, as both Phil and Brewmaster Will (Meyers) have a lot of respect for CIBC and feel the values and visions of our two companies align well.”
Bannatyne couldn't be reached for comment.
Adam Romanow, founder and CEO of Castle Island, is quoted in the Facebook past as saying

Australia: Government downgrades expected revenue from alcohol excises over next four years
|
The Australian Government has dramatically downgraded its expected revenue from the alcohol excise tax over the next four years as price rises dent consumer demand, the Drinks Digest reported on December 20.
Spirit excise proceeds, for example, have been revised downwards by A$1.7 billion over the four years to 2027-28 (a drop of 8%).
The Australian Government’s Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook 2024–25 (MYEFO) shows a significant decline in forecast revenue since the previous estimates in the May budget.
Beer, spirits and “other alcohol” excise revenues are expected to be down A$330 million on estimates for 2024-25, with 2025-26 predicted to be down A$380 million.
Australian already has one of the world’s highest alcohol excise taxes and it was increased yet again on 5 August 2024 to A$103.89 per litre for spirits and as much as A$61.32 per litre for beer.
The CPI increase was the 75th tax hike on alcohol since automatic indexation was introduced by Paul Keating in August 1983, in his first Budget as Treasurer.
Bootlegging has been another by-product of the surging tax burden. The ATO estimates that in the 2022-23 tax year it lost A$800 million due to contraband alcohol.
Victorian police, for example, uncovered a billion-dollar liquor substitution racket in April

India: India's antitrust body raids AB InBev, Pernod Ricard offices
|
India's antitrust body has raided some offices of alcohol giants Pernod Ricard and Anheuser-Busch InBev as it investigates accusations of price collusion with retailers in a southern state, sources familiar with the matter said.
Wednesday's surprise raids by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) targeted offices in the city of Hyderabad, and some retailers in nearby Telangana state, the five sources said, in one of the biggest such industry crackdowns in recent years.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak to the media.
In a statement, AB InBev, which makes Budweiser beer, said, "While we cannot comment on the specifics, we take antitrust compliance very seriously. We are working together in collaboration with the authorities."
Pernod, maker of brands such as Chivas Regal, said in a statement it complies with Indian laws and is cooperating with the authorities on the matter.
The CCI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter, but its rules require details of raids and investigations in price collusion to be kept confidential until the conclusion of cases.
The biggest previous crackdown in the beer industry, in 2018 saw raids on Carlsberg, AB InBev and United Breweries in an investigation

Belgium: Flemish red-brown beers to get European protection label
|
Flemish red-brown beers, like Rodenbach, will soon get a European protection label. The beer is already recognised as a regional product, but the European label will further protect the way it is brewed and its origin. It is also an important quality label. Flemish red-brown beer is only brewed in eight breweries in West Flanders, VRT reported on December 19.
An application has now been submitted to the European authorities to grant ‘Flemish red-brown beer' so-called Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. This European recognition is given to agricultural products and foodstuffs that are typical of a certain region. It protects its origin, the way it is produced and thus also its taste. As a result it is also an important quality label.
Flemish agriculture minister Jo Brouns (Christian democrat) is confident that the application will be approved. ‘Flemish red-brown beer is a unique type of beer characteristic of West Flanders. It is only brewed at a limited number of locations, in Roeselare, Tielt, Kortrijk, Kortemark and Ichtegem. The national authorities examined all conditions were met before the application was sent to the European commission. Recognition by the European authorities would be a nice confirmation of the quality work done by the

South Korea: Terra beer’s cumulative sales exceeded 5.08 billion bottles
|
Hite Jinro, a liquor manufacturer such as Hite Beer and Chamisul, announced on the 18th that its beer brand Terra's cumulative sales exceeded 5.08 billion bottles, Mael Business Newspaper reported on December 18.
An official from Hite Jinro said, "Terra, which was released in March 2019, was sold a total of 5.08 billion bottles (330 ml) as of the 20th of last month," adding, "This is enough to fill about 671 Olympic-standard swimming pools."
Terra has been steadily attracting attention since its launch. The repurchase rate was high as it went viral that it was refreshing and good for the throat. Terra Light, which was released in July this year, is also loved by consumers.
An official from HiteJinro explained, "Terra Light uses malt produced in Australia with clean air, and it invests four times more time than when extracting regular beer when extracting beer. We put beer in a transparent bottle to make it look visually light, and expressed a light feeling by marking the product name in a 'cobalt blue' color label to make it feel fresh."
According to Nielsen Korea, a research company that researches markets in various industries, Terra Light ranked first in sales of Wright beer in major hypermarkets
