USA, NH & MA: Smuttynose Brewing and Harpoon Brewery to unite under the name Barrel One Collective
|
Two of the largest and oldest craft breweries in New England are merging into one: the parent companies of Smuttynose Brewing and Harpoon Brewery will unite under the name Barrel One Collective, the Washington Beer Blog reported on January 2.
The resulting company ranks as the 14th largest craft brewery in the country, according to 2023 production data. Combined, the two breweries produced 165,000 barrels of beer in 2023, according to the press release announcing the merger.
Mass. Bay Brewing is the parent company of Harpoon Brewery, one of the oldest craft breweries in the nation, dating back to 1986. That company’s state-issued brewery license is #001. Finestkind Brewing is the parent company of Smuttynose Brewing, which was founded in New Hampshire in 1993 and is also one of the region’s oldest craft breweries.
The new company, Barrel One Collective, will bring 14 brands together and operate brewery taprooms and/or retail businesses across four states (MA, NH, NY, VT) starting in spring 2025. Barrel One Collective will “temporarily pause large-scale production at its Hampton, NH brewery, but hopes to restart at a future date.” The announcement said the restaurant, event space, and hospitality operations at the Hampton facility will be

Canada, BC: New triple-threat brewery collective opening in east Vancouver
|
Three east Vancouver brewers are coming together like the "Three Musketeers" of craft beer, Vancouver Is Awesome reported on December 27.
The owners of Threefold Brewing are renovating the space at 1507 Powell St, the former home of Andina Brewing, and making a home for a trio of long-time and respected Vancouver beer companies.
"Threefold is a brewery collective," co-owner Matt Kump tells V.I.A. "The three breweries have existed for years now, since the mid-2010s, and they're coming together to share space, resources, skill sets, expertise, and a taproom."
The three brands coming together are Slow Hand Beer Company, Temporal Artisan Ales, and Boombox Brewing, with an ownership group including the brewers and others, like Kump.
"These breweries, in particular, they're all very craft-oriented," says Kump. "I don't mean that in the buzz term sense. I mean that they're all craftspeople."
Finding affordable space for a small brewery is difficult, Kump explains, and uniting together gives them all a chance to grow.
"It's just been impossible in this city [to find space to grow]," he says. "This opportunity kind of came to us earlier this year."
Kump notes that the brewers have known each other for a while and agreed sharing the space would be a

USA, CA: Californian distillery Savage & Cooke acquired by company behind Redwood Empire Whiskey
|
The company behind Redwood Empire Whiskey has acquired Californian distillery Savage & Cooke to increase its production, The Spirits Business reported on January 2.
Californian whiskey Redwood Empire is part of the Purple Brands portfolio of wine and spirits, which was founded by Derek Benham in 2001.
Benham said the acquisition of Savage & Cooke would enable his whiskey business to ‘meet soaring demand’ and create a visitor destination for Redwood Empire.
“Our goal has always been to produce exceptional spirits, and with this new distillery, we’re positioning ourselves to do just that on a larger scale,” added Benham, who established the Redwood Empire brand in 2014.
The whiskey is made at a distillery in Granton, California. The range includes bottled-in-bond whiskeys, single barrel bottlings and cask-strength expressions.
In 2024, the brand’s volumes soared by 30% to 55,000 nine-litre cases.
Aaron Webb, CEO of Purple Brands, believes the acquisition will “solidify Redwood Empire’s position as a serious American whiskey player”.
“Demand for our offerings has far exceeded our production capacity for several years,” he continued. This move solves that challenge, but it’s not just about expansion – it’s about preserving our tradition of excellence while pushing the boundaries of what we can create.”
Savage & Cooke was founded

UK & USA: Scotch whisky distillers express fears over threat of “damaging” import tariffs in the US
|
Scotch whisky distillers have expressed their fears over the threat of “damaging” import tariffs being re-imposed on single malt across the Atlantic, The Herald reported on January 2.
President-elect Donald Trump has signalled the US will pursue protectionist trade policies when he returns to the White House this month, which is widely expected to mean the reintroduction of import tariffs in the whisky industry’s most lucrative export market.
Import tariffs introduced during the first Trump administration, which stemmed from a trade dispute between the US and European Union over aircraft subsidies, are estimated to have hit exports of single malt Scotch whisky to America by several hundred million pounds.
The UK Government appointed Lord Peter Mandelson a former minister for business and trade in the cabinets of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, as ambassador to the US shortly before Christmas, ahead of what are expected to be contentious trade negotiations with the incoming President. The appointment of the highly experienced politician appears to illustrate the importance the UK is attaching to securing favourable trading terms with the US in the Trump era.
Speaking shortly before Christmas, Scottish Chambers of Commerce chief executive Liz Cameron highlighted the importance of the US economy to Scotland’s exporters

USA, WI: Gathering Place Brewing Co. acquires Grafton’s Sahale Ale Works
|
Gathering Place Brewing Co. in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood has acquired craft brewery Sahale Ale Works in Grafton, BizTimes reported on January 2.
Sahale Ale Works, founded by Matt Hofmann, is an independent brewery and taproom located at 1505 Wisconsin Ave. in Grafton.
Gathering Place, owned and founded by Joe Yeado, will continue producing Sahale-branded beers.
Gathering Place has been around since 2017, operating from a 4,100-square-foot warehouse and taproom at 811 E. Vienna Ave. The company, which specializes in European-inspired brews, opened a second location in Wauwatosa in 2022.
“Matt and his team have created something special that resonates with guests and serves the Grafton community,” said Yeado. “I’m thrilled that he has entrusted the brand to us and I look forward to working with the team to continue building and growing Sahale as a leader in the Wisconsin brewing community.”
Sahale operates a three-barrel brewing system alongside a 2,700-square-foot taproom and adjoining patio space. It offers a rotating selection of beer styles, including IPAs, fruit beers, sours, and barrel-aged options.
“I am super excited to build on what Matt has created at Sahale. I look forward to continuing to produce many of the fan favorites people have come to love, like Sky Breaker IPA and

Canada, ON: Beer companies struggling under Ontario's expansion of sales to corner stores
|
In 2024, Ontario’s government announced its commitment to expanding the province’s alcohol marketplace. The phased expansion began in August, when up to 450 grocery stores that were licensed to sell beer, cider, and wine, were permitted to start selling ready-to-drink beverages, Daily Hive reported on December 31.
After October 31, all eligible grocery and big-box stores were allowed to sell beer, cider, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages, including in large pack sizes. While the changes have made it more convenient for Ontario residents to access and purchase alcohol, some local craft breweries are expressing concern about the long-term impacts on their businesses.
Blood Brothers Brewing, a craft beer microbrewery located at 165 Geary Avenue, is one of the many businesses expressing skepticism about the provincial expansion.
The brewery was founded in 2015 by Dustin and Brayden Jones and serves up to 19 beers on tap along with southern comfort dishes in a renovated hundred-year-old horse stable.
The business expressed concerns about the government’s alcohol expansion to blogTO, noting that the new policies might be primarily benefiting foreign-owned companies versus local producers.
“The state of our business prior to the expansion of alcohol was a steady growth pattern year over year. The pandemic had our online sales

USA, ME: Stars and Stripes Brewing closes permanently in Freeport
|
What once looked like a promising alternative for beer lovers outside of Portland has suddenly become an odd series of dominoes falling in the wrong direction, WCYY reported.
If you had asked Freeport, Maine, residents last summer, they would have told you that their town had all the delicious variety any craft beer lover could ask for. From Maine Beer Company to Mast Landing and beyond.
Fast forward just a few short months later and two breweries have closed up shop for somewhat different reasons. Gritty's was first after a lease dispute that couldn't be settled. They closed in November.
The latest? That would be Stars and Stripes Brewing right along the main drag at 8 Varney Road. The veteran-owned brewery announced their permanent closure in a straightforward social media post on December 31.
While no specific reason was given by Stars and Stripes as to why they were closing permanently, the property at 8 Varney Road has been previously listed for sale. That may have affected the businesses ability to operate there. Stars and Stripes opened their Freeport location back in 2018.
The Freeport closure for Stars and Stripes Brewing caps off what has been a difficult year for them. In February of 2024,

USA, MI: Waypost Brewing Company shuts its doors for good

A popular brewery in Allegan County has shut its doors, WSJM reported on December 30.
Waypost Brewing Company in Fennville opened in 2018 and promptly started winning awards for its beers. However, the brewery announced on social media earlier this month its last day would be December 28.
The business says it chose the name Waypost “to signify a guiding point along the journey — a temporary stopping place where farmhouse beer, good company, and meaningful connections come together.” It continues, “After six incredible years, we’ve reached a new marker on our path: the decision to close our doors.”
The brewery received an outpouring of support in the days that followed and it expressed its heartfelt thanks.

USA, WI: City Lights Brewing Company to close its doors for good on January 4
|
City Lights Brewing Company, based in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley, announced on Tuesday, Dec. 31 that it is closing, FOX6 News Milwaukee reported.
A post on the City Lights Brewing Company Facebook page said the following:
"After years of brewing incredible beers, serving delicious food, celebrating, and creating memories together, the time has come to close our doors for the last time this Saturday, 1/4. This decision was gut-wrenchingly difficult and comes after numerous challenges have made it unsustainable to continue.
"We want to express our deepest gratitude to our loyal patrons, our incredible staff, our valued suppliers and vendor partners, our cherished and supportive community, and all of you who have been part of our journey. Your love for great beer, your smiles, and your unwavering support have made our brewery more than just a place—it has been a gathering spot, a hub of connection, and a home. USA, NH: Pipe Dream Brewing set to close at the end of January
|
Pipe Dream Brewing, which brought a West Coast vibe to Londonderry, is set to close at the end of the month after nine years, Yahoo reported on January 3.
The brewery's final day will be Feb. 2.
The announcement comes five months after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor recovered more than $900,000 in back wages, withheld tips and liquidated damages for 44 employees from the brewery and taproom. Pipe Dream Brewing LLC was also fined $5,148.
A 220-word post on Facebook on Thursday did not mention the investigation.
"Huge thank you to our incredible employees who have made the past nine years unforgettable, pouring their hearts into every pint," the post reads. "To our loyal customers and members, thank you for your unwavering support and for being part of the Pipe Dream family."
Pipe Dream was opened in 2016 by co-founders and owners John Bacheller and Jon Young. They encouraged customers with gift cards to "visit and redeem them as soon as possible."
The news brought a flurry of comments on Facebook, including accusations of poor business practices, which Bacheller refuted in a statement.
"Pipe Dream Brewing has consistently prioritized its employees, striving to create stable and rewarding careers," he said.

USA, NY: Alternative Medicine Brewing Co. permanently closed
|
Alternative Medicine Brewing Co., located in Mount Vernon, permanently closed after its final days of business on Friday, Dec. 27, and Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, Daily Voice reported on January 2.
The brewery had been a fixture in the community since it opened in a previously disused space in 2019. Known for its creative beers and welcoming atmosphere, the brewery became a gathering place for friends, family, and craft beer enthusiasts.
In a heartfelt message to supporters, the brewery owners reflected on the journey.
“We set out to build a brewery, brew some rad beer, and create an inviting space where people could come together and have a good time,” wrote founder Jordan and the AMBC team. “We’ve met so many wonderful people who have become like family.”
Despite its successes, the brewery cited the challenges of running a small business as the reason for its closure.
“Unfortunately, the realities of running a small business have caught up with us,” the announcement read. “While we’ve poured our hearts and souls into AMBC, we simply don’t have the resources to keep going.”
While the future of the brewery and taproom remains uncertain, the owners are exploring options for a potential sale. Jordan plans to stay in

USA, IN: Scarlet Lane Brewing Co. closes its flagship brewpub in McCordsville
|
Scarlet Lane Brewing Co., which operated five area locations until just over a year ago, plans to shut down its flagship brewpub in McCordsville at the end of the year, marking an end to the 10-year-old business, The Daily Reporter reported on December 27.
In a Facebook post, Scarlet Lane CEO Eilise Lane said the McCordsville would close after the end of business on Dec. 31.
“It is time to share heartbreaking news,” Lane wrote. “After a lot of reflection and discussion as a team, we intend on selling our 4 acres, buildings and equipment here in McCordsville. This is not something we had planned on or hoped we would ever have to do. However, we are exploring current interest in our property and that coupled with sudden health changes, building needs, and the overall market, we decided it was best to move forward in this direction and focus solely on this goal.”
Scarlett Lane got its start with Beech Grove brewpub in 2014. Over the years, it opened tap rooms in the Meridian-Kessler, Kennedy-King, Irvington and Beech Grove neighborhoods.
In early December 2023, Scarlet Lane closed tap rooms in the Meridian-Kessler and Kennedy-King neighborhoods. The Irvington closure followed in late February. In mid-December,

Vietnam: SABECO maintains strong financial foundation moving into 2025
|
Saigon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Corporation (SABECO) is not only maintaining a strong financial foundation moving into 2025, but is also expanding its socioeconomic activities to boost social circles and the environment, Vietnam Investment Review reported on January 2.
The company, known as SABECO, announced the closing of the shareholder list to pay cash dividends in 2024 at a rate of 20 per cent. The expected payment date is January 23, 2025.
A solid financial foundation has been a reliable factor that SABECO has consistently maintained through many business cycles and in 2024. This past year, the brewer focused its business resources on market development activities, including building brand and distribution strategies, consumption in line with consumer trends, restructuring the distribution system, increasing efficiency, and supporting control by channel and product segment.
At the same time, the company is maintaining its place in the domestic market while reaching out to the international market, promoting research and development to improve product quality and launch new product lines, and improving the efficiency of the supply chain throughout the SABECO system.
On top of that, the company has focused on reform to increase investment efficiency, reduce operating costs, and increase productivity; and developed modern trade channels and online sales channels,

World: Social pressure puts barrier in front of non-alcoholic beer sales – Heineken study
|
Most consumers say it is acceptable to have no- or low-alcohol drinks when they go out but some opt for alcohol anyway because of social pressure, according to research by Heineken and the University of Oxford, Financial Times reported on January 2.
The study, based on an Ipsos survey of 11,842 adults of a range of ages in the UK, US, Spain, Japan and Brazil, found that 68 per cent had tried no- or low-alcohol alternatives and 80 per cent believed that drinking them was more acceptable than it was five years ago.
Yet among those who drink alcohol at least once or twice a year, half said that on social occasions they “always” or “sometimes” drank alcohol despite intending to have low- or no-alcohol options.
“Reports from people suggesting that they want to try non-alcoholic versions of alcoholic drinks doesn’t necessarily always translate into increased sales,” said the report’s author, Charles Spence, professor of experimental psychology at the University of Oxford.
“Despite a heightened acceptance of non-alcohol drinkers . . . it is evident that people still do sometimes face social judgment from others concerning their choice of non-alcoholic drinks,” he added.
The research identified a number of challenges for the no- and low-alcohol drinks category, including the

More Czechs are choosing alcohol-free options, driven by health concerns and changing habits, with breweries responding to the growing demand. Even in pubs, non-alcoholic beer is becoming a staple on tap, Radio Prague reported on January 2.
"I decided to stop drinking alcohol two years ago, on August 14th. I know the exact date because since then I've been counting the days I haven't had alcohol," says Tomáš Hájek, a young man from Brno, the second city of Czechia.
This year, like last year, Tomáš spent New Year's Eve without alcohol. He began his abstinence after COVID. He realized he was drinking more at home than he wanted to. Now, he feels better:

Thailand: ThaiBev launches Thailand’s first Scotch whisky
|
Beverage giant ThaiBev is embarking on an ambitious venture to create Thailand’s first premium single malt whisky that’s internationally recognised, and after over half a decade of hard work, the elixir of life is now available in three expressions, Khaosod English reported on December 28.
In mid-December, a number of selected guests, and members of the press, were invited to sample the three expressions of PRAKAAN single malt whisky paired with food at The House on Sathorn for a memorable evening.
Mr Prapakon Thongtheppairot, Chief Spirits Product Group of Thai Beverage Public Company Limited (ThaiBev), explained to the forty-or-so guests that PRAKAAN single malt, distilled with local spring water in Kamphaeng Phet province is about provenance, passion, and pride.
The Western Forest Complex, which includes the province of Kamphaeng Phet, sits near the distillery. It is considered the largest remaining forest track in mainland Southeast Asia and covers an area of 18,000 square kilometres. (for comparison, the island of Phuket is 543 square kilometres, while Singapore is 750 square kilometres, and Bangkok 1,569 square kilometres).
This is where PRAKAAN (which means a fort, alluding to the fortification of the ancient city and reflected in the red-brick walls of its distillery, derived its name from.)
