USA: Imported beers outperform domestic brands for the first time in 2024
|
US beer drinkers have traditionally favoured American-brewed beers. However, according to new data released by online research data and analytics group YouGov, imported beers outperformed domestic brews in 2024 for the first time in terms of popularity (not tangible sales), The Drinks Business reported on January 3.
The gigantic YouGov survey, which harvests the opinion of 24 million US consumers, measures the ‘popularity’ of a product in terms of consumer awareness, brand perception and loyalty.
In this case, a beer’s popularity score was calculated by ascertaining the total number of consumers who “have heard of” a product, and then assessing the proportion of people who view that product “positively”.
The vast research project, carried out continually with results published every 90 days, reveals that the top three most popular beers in the US in Q3 of 2024 were Guinness, Modelo and Corona.
In fourth place sat Heineken.
It is not until fifth place that an American beer makes an appearance in the popularity rankings. Samuel Adams, the flagship product of the Boston Beer Company, outranked the likes of Budweiser, Coors and Miller. Described by its branding team as “approachable, complex, and smooth with the perfect balance of caramel malt sweetness and spicy hop bitterness”, Samuel

USA: Imported beers outperform domestic brands for the first time in 2024
|
On Thursday, January 2, Pabst Brewing Company announced a new contract brewing agreement with Anheuser-Busch InBev, according to a report from Brewbound. Starting in the first quarter of 2025, the San Antonio-based brewery will begin using AB InBev’s several production facilities to contract brew many of its beloved beer brands.
The news arrives just after Pabst’s nearly two-decades-long contract brewing agreement with Molson Coors ended in December 2024. When the contract’s end date was made public in 2019, the Blue Ribbon manufacturer announced that it had sealed a similar arrangement with City Brewing set to continue through 2040 to offset the loss in Molson Coors production. The La Crosse, Wisc.-based company stands as one of the largest contract brewers in the U.S. with facilities in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and California.
Since Pabst closed its Milwaukee brewing facility in 1996, the beverage company has brewed its iconic brands — including Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Old Style, Lone Star, and Stroh’s — at third-party plants. In a press release, Pabst announced that the new AB InBev deal will allow for “greater supply chain flexibility and improved efficiencies,” going on to note that City Brewing’s facilities will still “continue to produce significant volumes” for

Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan beer consumers pay over 70% of retail price in taxes
|
The beer consumers in Sri Lanka are effectively paying over 70 percent of the retail price of beer purely in taxes, according to research by Jafferjee Brother Securities (JBS).
According to the report, the excise duties alone account for 47 percent of the retail price of a bottle of strong beer while the Value Added Taxes make up 15.3 percent of the price.
Additionally, the income tax adds a further 6 percent, Social Security Contribution Levy accounts for 2.4 percent and a tax on dividends adds 0.5 percent.
These taxes collectively amount to a whopping 71.2 percent of the retail price when adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP), according to the research.
“Even with the PPP adjustments, enjoying a cold one is not as chilled as it seems,” JBS commented on its findings.
However, global analytical platforms project that the revenue generated in the beer market in Sri Lanka will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.32 percent between 2025 and 2029.
In 2025, the local market is expected to generate approximately US $ 661.5 million in total revenues.
Accordingly, the at-home consumption, driven by the sales in supermarkets and convenience stores, is expected to amount to US $ 523.8 million and out-of-home consumption,

UK: Guinness to open a new microbrewery in the UK this year
|
Guinness is set to open a brand new microbrewery in England this year after major delays, The Mirror reported on January 8.
Plans for the brewery were first announced back in 2022 with plans to open just a year later, in 2023. However, the project saw some setbacks, which caused delays; one of which was the administration of the project's lead contractor, Beck Interiors, in July last year.
However, the new 50,000 sq ft microbrewery and culture hub is reportedly set to open this year - although Guinness owner Diego has yet to confirm the exact date. A spokesman for Diageo, owner of Guinness, told The Grocer Magazine in October 2024: “We remain very excited to open the doors of the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in London next year, reaching an even broader audience for Guinness than before.”
The project - which is costing the brewery £73million - will be based at the Old Brewer’s Yard in Covent Garden in London. According to Secret London, the entire space will feature numerous bars, community and events spaces, a merch store, an open-fire kitchen, and a rooftop restaurant boasting 360-degree panoramic views of the capital. Alongside this, the space will feature a massive microbrewery that

India: Heineken-owned United Breweries stops supplying beer to Telangana over pricing
|
Heineken-owned United Breweries on January 8 stopped supplying beer to Telangana in southern India, following the state's refusal to allow price rises, which the company said had resulted in huge losses, Reuters reported.
United Breweries, maker of India's Kingfisher brand, is the country's biggest beer company and the state of Telangana is India's biggest beer consumer.
"Despite our continuous efforts over the past two years, there has been no increase in the base prices offered for our products. This has resulted in escalating losses, making our operations in the state unviable," United Breweries said in a statement announcing the suspension of supplies.
United Breweries did not give financial details on the size of its losses.
Last May, United Breweries CEO Vivek Gupta said in an earnings call that it was owed 7-8 billion rupees in lost revenue from the south Indian state.
In response to the supply halt, Telangana's minister of Excise and Prohibition, Jupally Krishna Rao, said at a press conference on Wednesday that United Breweries had asked for a 33.1% price hike on its beer, which would "become a burden on consumers."
The minister said the state has formed an independent committee to review the price hike request. Based on its report, the government

Europe & Asia: Molson Coors appoints new president and CEO of its EMEA & APAC region
|
Molson Coors said on January 2 it had named Phil Whitehead, an 18-year veteran of the company and most recently its Managing Director in Western Europe, as the next president and CEO of its EMEA & APAC region, effective Jan 1, 2025.
Prior to his eight-year tenure as Managing Director of Western Europe, Whitehead oversaw Molson Coors’ supply chain functions for 12 European markets.
Above premium brands comprise over 50% of Molson Coors’ EMEA & APAC net brand revenue, and global CEO Gavin Hattersley believes Whitehead is the ideal person to lead this part of the business due to his wide-ranging expertise and ability to drive portfolio transformation.
“Notable among Phil’s accomplishments is the launch of Madri Excepcional, our most successful innovation in many years,” said Hattersley. “He has also overseen many years of growth and achievement including growing above premium brands Staropramen, Pravha and Cobra, and diversifying beyond beer with the acquisition of Aspall Cyder.”
Starting in the UK and Ireland business back in 2006, Whitehead has worked his way up the ranks over his 18-year tenure with the company.
Along with his business success, Hattersley also explained that Whitehead has the necessary leadership skills to lead

Taiwan: Taiwan to launch anti-dumping investigation into imports of low-priced Chinese beer
|
Taiwan’s Finance Minister Chuang Tsui-yun announced on January 2 that the government would launch an anti-dumping investigation into imports of low-priced Chinese beer, The Drinks Business reported on January 3.
Lawmakers have accused Chinese brewers exporting their products to Taiwan of engaging in unfair trade practices by receiving subsidies from the Chinese government, according to the Taipei Times.
The Taiwan Brewers Association, made up of the country’s six biggest brewers, called on the government to launch an investigation into cheap beer imports from Mainland China.
Finance Minister Chuang announced this week that the government is set to launch a probe into low-priced Chinese beer.
The proportion of the Taiwanese beer market made up of Chinese beer brands has increased from just 8% in 2015 to a current market share of 34%.
Responding to lawmakers’ questions during a hearing before the Legislature’s Finance Committee, Chuang said that she was aware that the Taiwan Brewers Association had sent out an application for an investigation. She added that the ministry would begin its inquiry within 30 days of receiving it.
According to reporting by Focus Taiwan, in those 30 days, an interagency tariff commission would be convened to investigate.
A review and investigation into the anti-dumping case would take between
