Brewery news UK: Greene King secures approval of plans for a new state-of-the-art brewery
Brewing giant Greene King has had its plans for a new “state-of-the-art” £40 million brewery approved by West Suffolk Council, The Drinks Business reported on January 9.

It was last spring when Greene King announced that it would cease to brew at its historic Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds, where it had been based for more than two centuries. The announcement came, coincidentally, shortly after a small fire broke out in one of the brewery’s cooling towers.

Having selected a site, at Suffolk Business Park, a new development on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds, and next to the company’s distribution centre, Greene King’s plans for its production facility have received the crucial stamp of approval from West Suffolk Council.

“The move allows the brewery to modernise its facilities to ensure that they are more sustainable and more efficient for the future, which aligns with our priority for sustainable growth within the district,” commented Councillor Indy Wijenayaka, cabinet member for growth at the council. “Its investment and eagerness to stay in Bury St Edmunds not only ensures the retainment of jobs and a skilled workforce, but also demonstrates West Suffolk is the location for businesses to grow and evolve.”

Brewery news India: Global alcohol firms demand US$466 mln from Indian state in payments row
Global alcohol companies such as Diageo, Pernod Ricard and Carlsberg are demanding unpaid dues of about US$466 million (RM2.1 billion) from India's Telangana state, where Heineken suspended supplies this week in an unprecedented move, three industry sources were quoted as saying by Reuters on January 9.

India is the world's eighth-biggest alcohol market by volume, with annual revenues that Euromonitor estimated last year at US$45 billion. Its states individually regulate pricing of alcohol products, which are major contributors to their revenue.

Heineken's United Breweries has said it will halt supplies to southern Telangana, India's biggest beer consumer, because of delayed payments and lack of government approval for higher prices since fiscal 2019/20, which hurt its finances.

This week’s unusual move by India's biggest beer company sparked a fall of 7% in its shares at a time when the industry faces intense scrutiny nationwide.

The antitrust watchdog is separately investigating accusations of collusion by Anheuser-Busch InBev and France's Pernod to boost market share, having raided their offices in December. Both are cooperating with Indian authorities.

Many places like Telangana require liquor companies to supply only to state-run depots, which then sell to retailers, forcing the companies to rely on state governments for payment.

Brewery news USA: Anheuser-Busch to make Pabst beer after Molson Coors partnership ends
Pabst Brewing Company has announced a new brewing contract agreement with Anheuser-Busch InBev. The contract comes after a two-decade long contract agreement with Molson Coors came to an end in December 2024, Yahoo! Finance reported on January 9.

Beginning in the first quarter of 2025, Pabst will begin production using several AB InBev facilities.

Since the closing of Pabst’s Milwaukee brewery in 1996, the company has relied on third-party plants to brew legacy brands like Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Style and Old Milwaukee. Now, AB InBev will give Pabst the space for greater supply, as well as the potential to grow its portfolio as the consumer market shifts.

Prior to the new AB InBev agreement, when the Molson Coors contract end date became public in 2019, Pabst announced a similar agreement with City Brewing. The companies made a deal running through 2040 to offset the Molson Coors production loss. City Brewing will still produce significant volumes for Pabst. With facilities in Wisconsin, Tennessee, California and Pennsylvania, the La Crosse, Wisconsin-based City Brewing is one of the nation's largest contract brewers.

As for Anheuser-Busch, the deal moves a former rival into its supply chain. The beer giant recently closed a Massachusetts distribution facility, but has ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: More Britons drinking low and no alcohol beers than ever before
More Britons are drinking low and no alcohol beers, wines and spirits than ever before as they shun boozy lifestyles, a study reveals.

The trend is being largely driven by younger adults, who are most likely to embrace sobriety throughout the year, MSN reported on January 7.

Almost four in ten UK drinkers (38 per cent) are now also consuming low and no alcohol alternatives regularly or occasionally, up from 29 per cent in 2022.

And more than a quarter (29 per cent) of adults consuming these drinks cite ‘health and medical’ concerns as a key reason for sometimes choosing an alternative to the real thing.

But the most popular reason for avoiding a full-strength beverage is so they can drive home from social events (28 per cent), the poll of 2081 adults reveals.

The YouGov survey, commissioned by alcohol industry regulator the Portman Group, found one in four people (24 per cent) would like to see more more low and no options available on tap in pubs to further encourage them to switch.

They also want to see greater use of price promotions (30 per cent) and greater availability of low and no products in non-traditional hospitality spaces (26 per cent) such as nightclubs, theatres, ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Go Beer Brewery to reopen after decade closure
Go Beer Brewery, a liquor manufacturing company located in Gweru in central Zimbabwe, is set to reopen soon thereby creating 50 job opportunities, New Zimbabwe reported on January 9.

The liquor undertaking concern run by City of Gweru was closed nearly a decade ago due to financial mismanagement that saw the company swimming in a staggering US$2.6 million debt.

In an interview, Gweru Mayor, Martin Chivoko said the reopening will boost Gweru’s economy.

“With the resuscitation of Go Beer Brewery, we are excited to announce that the brewery will create employment opportunities for at least 50 people for a start.

“This is a significant boost to our local economy and will help stimulate economic growth,” he said.

The premier also added that, “We’re thrilled to have partnered with Crest Street Industries to revive the brewery and restore it to its former glory.”

He said the revival of Go Beer Brewery is crucial for the council’s revenue generation which will also improve service delivery.

To support production, the council cultivated 23 hectares of winter wheat, aiming for a daily output of 120 000 litres of traditional beer.

“We put 23 hectares under winter wheat at the Go Beer Farm, which we are going to use as raw materials for ...More info on site

Brewery news Namibia: Bank of Namibia reports increase in beer production in Q4
Three months before the festive season, an increase in the manufacturing of beer and soft drinks could be observed in Namibia, The Namibian reported on January 8.

The Bank of Namibia (BoN) quarterly report shows that the manufacturing industry as a whole recorded positive growth year-on-year.

“Improvements were observed in the production of prominent manufactured products, such as blister copper, cement, soft drinks and beer,” says the BoN.

Blister copper recorded a growth of 49.2%, cement recorded a 2.2% increase, soft drink production increased by 6.6%, while beer recorded a 41.1% increase.

According to the BoN, the increase in beverage production was due to a higher demand and export volumes.

Barley news Ireland: 12 spring barley varieties added to this year’s recommended list from the Department of Agriculture
The spring barley varieties recommended list from the Department of Agriculture has entered record territory this year, with a massive 12 varieties making the cut, the Irish Farmer Journal reported on January 10.

This is a sign of great investment by the seed industry to find varieties suited to Ireland.

Spring barley is expected to take up over 120,000ha of the tillage area this year.

There is great choice among those varieties and it is important for all growers to examine the list carefully and find what best suits your system.

Two of these varieties – Hurler and Lollipop – are completely new to the list and are provisionally recommended, while others are classics such as Planet and Gangway, which have been on the list since 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Hurler and Lollipop both have a relative yield of 106, the highest on the list, although Spinner and Skyway are just behind with 105 and Geraldine and LG Mermaid are on 104.

Lollipop hits the high notes on quality as well, with a thousand grain weight (TGW) of 61. SY Amity if the nearest to it at 57.3, followed by Gretchen at 57.1 and Hurler at 56.4.

Barley news Ukraine: Barley prices continue to rise amid supply shortage and hryvnia devaluation
During the New Year holidays, the traditional decline in supply and demand for agricultural products in Ukraine was even more pronounced this year. This is due to the fact that farmers have enough working capital from selling rapeseed and sunflower in the first half of the season at high prices. Now they are refraining from selling amid the hryvnia devaluation and gradual rise in corn, wheat and barley prices, UkrAgroConsult reported on January 10.

The dollar continues to rise against the hryvnia and has increased by 0.5% to 42.4 UAH/$ since the beginning of the year, which, together with higher export prices, is contributing to the rapid growth of feed barley prices.

Over the past two weeks, export demand prices for feed barley in the ports of the Black Sea increased by 200-400 UAH/t to 9300-9500 UAH/t or 192-195 USD/t, and in the ports of the Danube – to 200-201 USD/t, supported by rising prices for feed corn to 205-206 USD/t and feed wheat to 207-209 USD/t.

Amid stronger export demand, domestic feed processors have raised prices for feed barley to 8500-8600 UAH/t on FCA terms, although two weeks ago maltsters offered the same prices for high quality malting barley.

In 2024/25 MY (as ...More info on site

Whisky news UK: Diageo closes Chase Distillery, moves production to Scotland
Diageo has closed its Chase Distillery in Herefordshire and moved production of the brand’s gins and vodkas to Scotland, The Grocer reported on January 8.

The move, which was communicated to staff working at Chase last June and is now complete, was designed to “future proof” the brand, Diageo said.

“Since acquiring Chase in 2021, we have seen substantial change in the vodka and gin categories,” a spokeswoman for Diageo said. “To future proof Chase, we took the decision to renovate the liquid, revitalise the packaging, and transform the brand supply to drive its efficiency. These developments are designed to create future growth opportunities for the brand.”

Chase production has been shifted to Diageo’s Cameronbridge Distillery in Fife, The Grocer understands. The single grain distillery also produces liquid for Diageo brands including Gordon’s, Tanqueray and Pimm’s.

A total of 17 staff working at Chase Farm were given the option to transfer to other parts of the Diageo business, or offered redundancy terms. Four of these staff have elected to stay with the supplier, while the remainder have now left the business.

It comes after Diageo shut an on-site visitor centre at Chase in 2022, having acquired the brand from Tyrell’s crisps tycoon William Chase ...More info on site

Whisky news UK: First legal single malt whisky produced on Hebridean island of Tiree in over two centuries
Isle of Tiree Distillery has launched its inaugural whisky, the first legal single malt whisky produced on the Hebridean island of Tiree in over two centuries, Scottish Business News reported on January 9.

Founded in 2012 by trad folk musicians, Alain Campbell and Ian Smith, Tiree Whisky Company Ltd aims to preserve and promote Tiree’s whisky heritage, whilst reviving distilling on the island.

Once known as Tìr an Eòrna, which translates from Gaelic to the ‘Land of Barley’, Tiree was home to no less than fifty illicit distilleries before the 1800s. However – unlike other islands – Tiree never re-established a distillery until 2019 when Alain and Ian lit the stills of the Isle of Tiree Distillery for the first time.

Isle of Tiree Distillery is one of Scotland’s smallest whisky distilleries which uses traditional whisky production methods to produce 2,000 litres of pure alcohol per year (LPA). Each part of the process is handcrafted using methods of the past but with an enthusiastic vision for the future of the island.

Ian Smith, co-founder of Tiree Whisky Company says: “This is an important moment in the island’s history as we reconnect with an industry that was once such an important part of island life. ...More info on site
