Ireland: Diageo increases Guinness prices in Ireland
|
Guinness owner Diageo has increased draught beer prices in Ireland for the fourth time in two years with the cost of a pint of the black stuff predicted to rise by 6% from February, The Drinks Business reported on January 16.
Diageo has informed publicans that the price of Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Hophouse 13 and Harp will rise by 6% per pint before VAT from 3 February.
Industry sources have warned that once VAT, duty and pub margins are added, an extra 30% could be added to the price of a pint at the tap, as already struggling pubs will be forced to pass the increases on to consumers.
The hike is expected to raise the price of a pint to over €6 across the country, and tip the Dublin pint price above €7.
The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI), a trade organisation representing pubs outside the greater Dublin area, has said the decision will have a grave impact on Irish pubs.
“This isn’t just about the price of a pint. It’s about the survival of pubs across Ireland,” said Pat Crotty, VFI CEO.
Crotty warned that small, community-based pubs “are at breaking point” as a result of ongoing economic pressures.
He explained: “Publicans are being squeezed

UK: Guinness shortage gives 600% boost to rival stout Murphy’s
|
A Guinness shortage in the UK ahead of the festive season in December prompted a chain reaction: pubs were scrambling, drinkers were upset, and Diageo was left to cope with the outsized demand, Yahoo Finance reported on January 16.
Guinness’s rival is having a moment as the supply shortage continues into January.
Murphy’s, an Irish stout made by Dutch brewer Heineken, has seen demand skyrocket by 632% in the U.K. in December compared to the same period in 2023, according to data shared with Fortune by Heineken.
“These outstanding sales figures go to show demand for stout among U.K. pub-goers is in no way slowing down, while an increasing number are eager to discover stouts outside beyond the market leader,” a Murphy’s U.K. spokesperson said.
Guinness is the market leader in Irish stout, holding a sizable 80% market share. It’s also become wildly popular across the Atlantic, where Gen Z has been chasing the drink once considered niche.
The Guinness fever has been influenced by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, who have been seen with the drink, while content creators have dedicated videos to finding the best Guinness pint. That’s contributed to double-digit growth for Guinness in Europe and beyond.
“It was always, culturally, a huge part

UK: Sol the latest beer to experience abv cut in the UK
|
Sol is the latest beer to experience an abv cut in the UK market, with brewer Heineken UK planning to reduce the lager’s strength from 4.2% abv to 3.4%, Drinks Retailing reported on January 15.
The change means the company will pay less duty on the beer, as it moves into a new lower tax band for products from 1.3% abv to 3.4%, brought in during 2023.
It follows similar moves by other brewers to take advantage of the duty change.
However, Heineken said in statement that the abv reduction on Sol was motivated by consumer moderation trends.
It said: “We know consumers are increasingly choosing lower ABV products as part of a balanced lifestyle.
“In line with this trend, we continue to evaluate the ABV of all our products, and as such, we will be reducing the abv of Sol, from 4.2% to 3.4%.
“Our master brewers have taken great care to make sure that consumers will notice no change, and we have spent many months perfecting the beer and testing it with drinkers.
“As a responsible brewer we have a long-held position of promoting moderation, and we are proud that over the last few years, we have removed millions of alcohol units from consumption

USA: Whiskey producers anticipate new government guidelines
|
The recent decision by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to set specific identity regulations for ‘American single malt whiskey’ will come into effect on Monday 19 January, Harpers Wine & Spirit reported on January 16.
The decision sees the regulator set a number of criteria for producers to define American single malts, including that the product must be mashed, distilled and aged in the US, that it must be distilled to a proof of 160 or less, that it must distilled from a fermented mash of 100% malted barley, among a slew of other stipulations.
The regulation also sees the establishment of a five-year transition period for US whiskey labelled with the designation of either 'American single malt whiskey' or 'straight American single malt whiskey' on spirits bottled before January 19 2030, as long as the whiskey conforms to the regulation that had been in place prior to the incoming 2025 regulatory changes.
New identity regulations can be a challenge for producers, but it has been a welcome one for Kentucky based Limestone Branch Distillery. Its master distiller, Stephen Beam is heartened by the decision: “American Single Malt Whiskey being recognised as a category will accelerate innovation and quality
