Whisky news USA: Whiskey producers anticipate new government guidelines
The recent decision by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to set specific identity regulations for ‘American single malt whiskey’ will come into effect on Monday 19 January, Harpers Wine & Spirit reported on January 16.

The decision sees the regulator set a number of criteria for producers to define American single malts, including that the product must be mashed, distilled and aged in the US, that it must be distilled to a proof of 160 or less, that it must distilled from a fermented mash of 100% malted barley, among a slew of other stipulations.

The regulation also sees the establishment of a five-year transition period for US whiskey labelled with the designation of either 'American single malt whiskey' or 'straight American single malt whiskey' on spirits bottled before January 19 2030, as long as the whiskey conforms to the regulation that had been in place prior to the incoming 2025 regulatory changes.

New identity regulations can be a challenge for producers, but it has been a welcome one for Kentucky based Limestone Branch Distillery. Its master distiller, Stephen Beam is heartened by the decision: “American Single Malt Whiskey being recognised as a category will accelerate innovation and quality ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Marsh Island Brewing constructing a new second location in Hampden
There’s something new brewing in Hampden, WABI5 reported on January 15.

Marsh Island Brewing is currently constructing a new second location.

What started as a Swett’s autobody shop on Main St. in Orono has been home to Marsh Island Brewing for almost a decade.

“This location is great, it’s just we don’t have a ton of space for indoor seating, and that’s kind of what the beer market’s changed to, is a lot of in-house distribution,” explains co-owner Prentiss Swett of the Orono location’s limitations.

Sporting a full food menu headed by Joe Robbins, a James Beard Award semifinalist for emerging chefs, the Hampden location will be able to seat about 120 inside and about 35 on their planned deck.

A Hampden resident, Swett found the spacious solution right in town on Main Rd. North, but not without some challenges.

“Thought it was going to be a fairly small project, were going to do some minor renovations,” describes Swett. “Once we got in there, it’s a very old building, so it ended up turning into pulling the roof off, 40 by 40 addition in the back. So, project’s gotten a lot bigger. We’re hoping for a late summer, early fall opening.”

Construction crews have been crafting the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Campfire Brewery becomes Central Ohio’s newest brewery
Although the making of Central Ohio’s newest brewery sounds like something out of a Hallmark movie, it’s based on true events, 614NOW reported on January 15.

What started as a way to bring families together while social distancing during the pandemic turned out to be a dream come true for Dan Haskins, Roland Reeb, Brett Haaser, and Eric Hatton.

Every Saturday morning, the quad would wake up at 8am and brew a new beer together, experimenting hundreds of times with different recipes and beer styles.

And by evening, one of them would light a campfire in their backyard, sending a smoke signal to the neighborhood, showing the location where everyone would be gathering for the night to try out the new beer they spent all day brewing. “All of the families would get together, wife and kids and all, and we [the adults] would drink the fruits of our labor,” laughed Reeb.

Sending out a smoke signal via campfire to get together with their community is exactly what the quad wants to encompass with their new concept, called – you guessed it – Campfire Brewery, which is now open in the very same neighborhood they live in, at located close to their neighborhood at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: King Jugg Brewing Co. to move into former Bolden Dry Cleaners property in downtown Noblesville
A craft brewery plans to move onto the former Bolden Dry Cleaners property in downtown Noblesville that the city and county competed to buy in an unusually pugnacious spat, IndyStar reported on January 14.

King Jugg Brewing Co. will invest $4 million to build a brewery and restaurant at 1 N. 8th St. along the White River and rent it from the Noblesville Redevelopment Commission with an option to buy, the city announced in a news release Tuesday.

The brewery will have outdoor dining, a basketball court near the entrance, a playground, a performance and dance stage and an attached bathroom next to the river and the Nickel Plate Trail.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 and last until 2027.

“The location along the White River and proximity to our downtown square, trails and Federal Hill Commons make it the perfect spot for the family-friendly brewery and a natural fit into our downtown,” Mayor Chris Jensen said in the news release.

King Jugg has a brewery in Broad Ripple and a Tap Room in Fishers.

Bolden’s was a downtown mainstay for 63 years before closing in August, 2023. When word of its impending closure reached government officials both Jensen and Hamilton County Commissioner Steve ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Campfire Brewing opens in Westerville
Campfire Brewing opened over the weekend to a crowd of excited customers, Columbus Underground reported on January 14.

Located in Westerville at 6300 Frost Rd., Campfire Brewing opened Jan. 11. The brewery serves a variety of draft beers and cocktails in a family-friendly setting.

Campfire Brewing was opened by four Westerville neighbors who became friends as they united over their hobby of home brewing. After some discussions, they decided to create their own space to share their brews with even more neighbors.

The Campfire name derives from their use of fire as a smoke signal, letting the neighbors know when it was a good time to bring over friends. Inspired by the name, each picnic table inside has its own mini solo stove, and patrons can purchase s’mores kits to roast over their fire.

On opening day, Campfire offered 7 draft options, emphasizing an approachable menu with lots of variety:

• Wee Heavy- a caramelly Scottish ale with a light, sweet, malt flavor • Smoked Ale- A smoked IPA to drink around the fire • Chocolate Stout- a roasty chocolate stout that is fairly light-bodied and easily drinkable • Winter Warmer- a lightly spiced ale Campfire insists is too good for just the holidays • Double IPA- a warming and boozier IPA with an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Middletown’s expanded soccer facility to welcome a brewery on site
An expanded soccer facility on Randolph Road in Middletown will now be able to have a brewery on site thanks to recent approvals, The Middletown Press reported on January 12.

Zach Eddinger, owner of Vale Sports Club at 1280 Newfield St., recently came before the Planning and Zoning Commission to request an on-site move of the indoor athletic field building, as well as approval to open a brewery with outdoor seating open to the public.

Eli Cannon’s Tap Room and Tate’s restaurant owners Rocco and Aubrey Lamonica, and their brewery collective are partnering with Vale to supply food and beverages in lieu of a concession stand.

There is a café at the current location, Eddinger told commissioners, for which he has a license to sell beer and wine.

He also sought permission to construct shared office and retail business space, a gym for parents of youth soccer players, and a physical therapy center on the 26,000-square-foot former CL&P property on Randolph Road.

He is presently clearing land for an indoor/outdoor recreation facility with three soccer fields.

Eddinger has said the building layout would be similar to Middletown’s downtown walking mall, Main Street Market.

He was also given approval to modify the proposed parking layout, landscaping and utilities.

Brewery news USA, NH: Great Rhythm Brewing Company to move to new Portsmouth location
Great Rhythm Brewing Company will soon close its Portsmouth craft brewery and open a new production facility across town. A new taproom is not part of the business' immediate plan, however, Portsmouth Herald reported on January 14.

West Road will become the new home of Great Rhythm's beer production. The business will shut down its 105 Bartlett St. brewery, tasting room and outdoor beer garden overlooking the North Mill Pond after its final day Jan. 19.

The brewery's co-founders, Kristen and Scott Thornton, are working to open their next beer production space at 235 West Road, the former home of CPH Mechanical. The couple hope to fully move in and pick back up by the beginning of February, according to Scott Thornton.

However, Great Rhythm's new digs do not include enough space for a new taproom, meaning fans of the brewery won't be able to sit and sip beer on West Road. Thornton said the owners will search for a separate Portsmouth space to open a new taproom.

"It’s definitely bittersweet," Scott Thornton said in an interview Monday afternoon. "We loved being over here and creating this space here on Bartlett Street. But we’ve got to go. There’s so many really good memories that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Chanhassen Brewing Company to close permanently on February 1
Chanhassen Brewing Company will close its doors permanently on Saturday, Feb. 1, the brewery's owners announced on January 14.

"It’s been an incredible journey, and we are incredibly grateful for the support and loyalty you’ve shown us over the years," the closing announcement reads.

The closing announcement is being met with an outpouring of well-wishes from community members, who filled the Facebook comment section with memories and encouragement.

"Loved the beers and the atmosphere and the people who were serving," wrote Troy Worbel. "You will be missed."

The announcement, which doesn't give a reason for the closure, concludes: "Thank you for being a part of our story and for making Chanhassen Brewing Company such a special place. We’ll cherish the memories and all the wonderful moments we’ve shared together. Make sure to stop by before the 1st to grab your favorite beer and say goodbye."

Brewery news USA, MI: Wyoming’s 3 Gatos Brewery to close for good next month
After three and a half years, a popular brewery in the heart of Wyoming will close its doors permanently next month, Mlive.com reported on January 14.

Linus De Paoli opened 3 Gatos Brewery at 1760 44th St. SW in the summer of 2021 to offer a fusion menu inspired by Brazil, Germany, and the U.S. The local spot described itself as a “Boteco,” a typical neighborhood bar in Brazil for the community to get together with loved ones, have some drinks, eat good food and enjoy each other’s company.

De Paoli announced on social media that 3 Gatos Brewery will close on Feb. 8, calling it one of the toughest decisions he’s ever made.

“I feel like I failed you,” he wrote. “I’ve put my heart and soul into 3 Gatos. I tried everything that I knew of to make it a sustainable business. Brewed beers to the best of my abilities and knowledge, presented you with food and culture from Brazil, tried to create a welcoming and open environment, and organized all types of events. But we never managed to draw enough people to come and experience it all. And the slowdown in hospitality and craft beer hit us really hard, especially ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: Diageo increases Guinness prices in Ireland
Guinness owner Diageo has increased draught beer prices in Ireland for the fourth time in two years with the cost of a pint of the black stuff predicted to rise by 6% from February, The Drinks Business reported on January 16.

Diageo has informed publicans that the price of Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Hophouse 13 and Harp will rise by 6% per pint before VAT from 3 February.

Industry sources have warned that once VAT, duty and pub margins are added, an extra 30% could be added to the price of a pint at the tap, as already struggling pubs will be forced to pass the increases on to consumers.

The hike is expected to raise the price of a pint to over €6 across the country, and tip the Dublin pint price above €7.

The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI), a trade organisation representing pubs outside the greater Dublin area, has said the decision will have a grave impact on Irish pubs.

“This isn’t just about the price of a pint. It’s about the survival of pubs across Ireland,” said Pat Crotty, VFI CEO.

Crotty warned that small, community-based pubs “are at breaking point” as a result of ongoing economic pressures.

He explained: “Publicans are being squeezed ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Guinness shortage gives 600% boost to rival stout Murphy’s
A Guinness shortage in the UK ahead of the festive season in December prompted a chain reaction: pubs were scrambling, drinkers were upset, and Diageo was left to cope with the outsized demand, Yahoo Finance reported on January 16.

Guinness’s rival is having a moment as the supply shortage continues into January.

Murphy’s, an Irish stout made by Dutch brewer Heineken, has seen demand skyrocket by 632% in the U.K. in December compared to the same period in 2023, according to data shared with Fortune by Heineken.

“These outstanding sales figures go to show demand for stout among U.K. pub-goers is in no way slowing down, while an increasing number are eager to discover stouts outside beyond the market leader,” a Murphy’s U.K. spokesperson said.

Guinness is the market leader in Irish stout, holding a sizable 80% market share. It’s also become wildly popular across the Atlantic, where Gen Z has been chasing the drink once considered niche.

The Guinness fever has been influenced by celebrities like Kim Kardashian, who have been seen with the drink, while content creators have dedicated videos to finding the best Guinness pint. That’s contributed to double-digit growth for Guinness in Europe and beyond.

“It was always, culturally, a huge part ...More info on site
