USA: Beverage giants seek to brew sales growth beyond beer
|
Beverage giants are reshaping their playbook, blending alcoholic and non-alcoholic lines as consumer tastes shift away from traditional beer and wine. By stocking up their product portfolios with new offerings, manufacturers are blurring long-held category lines as traditional beer and wine fall out of favor, Fooddive.com reported on January 23.
The impetus to expand beyond alcohol for many companies is being further accelerated by the potential of higher tariffs from the Trump administration that could lead to higher costs for many of their signature offerings.
Spiros Malandrakis, lead alcohol researcher at Euromonitor, said product launches such as Coca-Cola’s canned cocktails and Molson Coors’ fruity spiked refreshers are omens of how beverage companies are planning their futures.
“The direction of travel is ... to become total beverage companies, from Coca-Cola’s aspirations to enter alcohol to AB InBev and Molson Coors and their aspirations of attracting the non-alcoholic segment, potentially further into soft drinks as well,” Malandrakis said.
The “beyond beer” category — which covers canned alcoholic beverages, such as cocktails and hard teas — posted a 6.3% increase in sales during the past year, according to Nielsen data cited in a note to investors from TD Cowen analyst Robert Moskow.
“The ability to innovate in order

Australia: Coopers Brewery announces new boss as veteran Tim Cooper retires
|
Coopers Brewery Managing Director Dr Tim Cooper has announced his retirement after 23 years at the helm, Drinks Digest reported on January 23.
As part of a planned succession strategy, Michael Shearer, currently General Manager, will take on the position of Managing Director.
The company will continue to be family owned and run, with the Board, chaired by fifth generation family member Mel Cooper, having a majority of Directors who are members of the Cooper family.
Dr Tim Cooper will remain on as a Director and Chief Brewer where he will continue to provide his input on brewing and technical matters.
The transition, effective from March 1, comes with Coopers at a notable stage of development, having recently opened its $70 million “new home” at Regency Park and growing beer sales across the country and overseas.
Following an increase in beer sales of 1.5% for the 2024 financial year, sales have grown year-to-date by 3.7%, while the national beer market continues to contract.
“To lead Coopers Brewery over the past 23 years has been both a privilege and a fulfilment,” Dr Cooper said.
“We have an impressive team at Coopers and together we have achieved more than what any of us could have imagined.

India: Craft and premium beer maker Medusa Beverages raises Rs56 crore
|
Medusa Beverages, a Delhi-based craft and premium beer brand, has raised Rs 56 crore, or about $6.6 million, in a Series A funding round co-led by investors Amal N. Parikh and Ashwin Kedia, Indian Startup News reported on January 24.
Additional investors such as stock market expert Ramesh Damani, banker Nikhil Garg, Crest Opportunities, and other high-net-worth individuals from Singapore, the UK, and the UAE also participated.
The latest round follows an earlier Pre-Series A raise of Rs 13 crore from many of the same investors. The startup now plans a Series B round, aiming to raise another Rs 70 crore by September this year.
Founded in 2017 by Avneet Singh, Medusa Beverages has built its presence by offering distinctive brews that combine bold flavours with a memorable look.
The startup produces multiple types of lager beer and says it has already established market leadership in Delhi’s crown market. It currently operates in Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, relying on third-party manufacturing in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
Medusa intends to double its production in Punjab with a new plant capable of brewing 4 lakh hectoliters per year. The startup forecasts its gross revenue could reach about Rs 180 crore by the

Sri Lanka: Rice shortage not caused by use of grain for beer, Media Minister says
|
Sri Lanka’s rice crisis is not caused by the use of the grain for beer, Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said as price controls made red rice go off the shelves into a black market ahead of the main Maha paddy harvest, Economy Next reported on January 22.
Sri Lanka only used about 16,000 to 18,000 tonnes of rice a year for beer, he told reporters at the weekly post-cabinet news conference.
“If you looked at the volume it is extremely small, to make any impact,” Minister Jayatissa said. “That is not the problem.”
The been industry uses rice for certain blending, the main starch used it malt.
Sri Lanka produces about 2.9 million metric tonnes of rice a year, of which the rice used for beer works out to around 0.4 percent.
There was also no truth in the claim that imported rice being used for beer was causing the shortage, he said.
Already 167,000 metric tonnes of rice have been imported and 8,000 metric tonnes are in the port.
Sri Lanka has import controls on rice. Beer industry officials have said they would be happy to import rice paying the tax, if they were allowed to import.
However, Sri Lanka not only has a 50 percent import

Spain: Heineken contributed €4.84 billion to the Spanish economy in 2023
|
Heineken contributed €4.84 billion to the Spanish economy in 2023, equating to 0.3% of the national GDP, a new report prepared by PwC for Heineken España has found – ESM reported.
The brewing giant, which counts brands such as Heineken, Cruzcampo, Amstel and El Águila in its portfolio, said that for every euro generated by its business, it contributes €11 to the country’s economy as a whole.
Heineken has had a presence in Spain for more than 120 years, and the market is its second largest in Europe and sixth largest in the world. Some 98% of the beer and cider that it sells in Spain is produced in the country, in its factories in Madrid, Seville, Valencia and Jaén.
Over the past three years, Heineken has invested close to €190 million in fixed assets in the Spanish market, and €30 million in sustainability and social action initiatives, as well as boosting the competitiveness of the hospitality sector by more than €700 million, it noted.
“At Heineken España we are proud to be able to contribute to the national and local economy in those places where we have a presence by focusing on innovation and sustainability,” commented Etienne Strijp, president of Heineken España.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation reports a 10 percent volume decline in sorghum beer sales
|
Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (ZSE) listed beverage manufacturer, Delta Corporation has reported a 10 percent volume decline in sorghum beer sales, as the adverse impact of last year’s El Nino-induced drought bites, The Herald reported on January 24.
In its trading update for the third quarter ended December 31 last year, Delta Corporation company secretary, Ms Faith Musinga said though the domestic sorghum beer volume grew by a slight two percent for the quarter, it fell equally by two percent for the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
“Overall volume declined by eight and 10 percent for the quarter and nine months respectively primarily due to cessation exports.
“The sorghum beer category was adversely impacted by drought, reduced disposable incomes in rural markets, changes in routes to market and the inconsistent performance by retail and wholesale partners,” she said.
This year, the company has increased the hectarage under its contract programme from last year’s 13 000 to 13 750. Last year’s production was affected by drought and this year’s production is expected to be higher, as a result of good rains.

Canada: Feed barley prices holding relatively steady
|
Feed barley prices in Western Canada were holding relatively steady in mid-January, despite rising corn prices south of the border, Grainews reported on January 23.
Feed barley into the key Lethbridge feeding area was priced at C$302 to C$305 per tonne area as of Jan. 17, according to the Alberta government’s weekly market review. That was steady on both the week and month.
Meanwhile, delivered corn prices have risen by roughly C$20 per tonne over the month, trading at about C$328 per tonne into Lethbridge in mid-January. Weakness in the Canadian dollar coupled with rising corn futures in Chicago have made corn imports from the United States more expensive for Canadian buyers.
March corn futures hit a high of US$4.9450 per bushel on Jan. 23, marking the strongest level for the front-month corn contract in eight months.
Canadian imports of U.S. corn remain slow, with only 56,100 tonnes imported as of Jan. 9 during the marketing year that began at the start of September, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. That compares with 471,600 tonnes at the same point a year ago. In addition, there are only 49,600 tonnes of outstanding U.S. corn sales to Canada, well below the 342,800 tonnes on the

USA: ASM Capital Group establishes investment fund fully focused on American Single Malt Whiskey
|
Spirits investment group ASM Capital Group has established the first investment fund fully focused on the American Single Malt Whiskey category, Yahoo Finance reported on January 23.
The development follows the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) officially recognising "American Single Malt Whiskey" as a distinct category, effective since 19 January.
The ‘ASM Capital Whiskey Fund’ aims to support the growth of the American Single Malt category leveraging a “strategic and proven whiskey barrel investing model", a statement said.
It will also look to increase "the allure and export appeal of the category worldwide", and help it compete with Scotch and Irish whiskey imports, while also capturing market share from bourbon and rye.
Nearly $10m was raised for the fund at the end of last year and a target is in place to secure $250m by 2026 to further purchase barrels.
In a statement, ASM Capital Group said: “With a strong international partner network overcoming the usual barriers to whiskey investing, ASM Capital Group aims to level the supply imbalance and lead the marketplace with 60% ASM category ownership.”
The venture’s barrel investing model is designed to benefit "homegrown brands" who are looking for aged whiskey products globally in the next two to five
