USA & Belgium: Belgian beer expected to generate revenue of $3.3 bln this year in the US
|
U.S. sales of beers brewed in Belgium are expected to generate revenue of $3.3 billion this year, according to statista.com. That may seem like a huge amount, but many, and likely most, American consumers are unfamiliar with prized Trappist beers and other beers brewed in the small European country.
The U.S. beer market is huge, so the unfamiliarity may be understandable. Revenues from all beers sold in the USA this year are expected to exceed $133 billion, statista says.
Many Americans got their first tastes of Belgian-brewed beer after Stella Artois was imported into the USA. The lager was first introduced in 1999, says Pennsylvania importer LT Verrastro. The beer is now owned by Anheuser-Busch and brewed for Americans in the United States.
The influential website Beer Advocate says Stella Artois is “okay” and gives it a 72 grade on a 100-point scale, a score far below many of Belgium’s highest-rated beers.
Belgium’s Trappist beers score 93 and higher and are designated as “outstanding” and “world-class.” Brewed at abbeys, the country’s five Trappist beers are Chimay, Rochefort, Westvletern, Westmalle and Orval. All except Westvleteren can be bought at U.S. retail stores.
“Belgium's beer market is unique due to its long-standing brewing traditions and the presence

USA, OH: Lockport Brewery to open second location in New Philadelphia
|
Bolivar's Lockport Brewery will be expanding into New Philadelphia, opening a second location in the former Five Barrel Bullet Brewing Co. building near Harry Clever Field sometime this spring, Times Reporter said on January 27.
The new business will be at 1690 E. High Ave.
"We're calling it the Pilot Brewhouse," said Lauren Marburger, who owns the business with her husband, Andrew. "There's two parts to that name. In the brewing world, a smaller brewhouse where you test out batches is called the pilot brewhouse. And then we're here right at Harry Clever Field, on the airstrip."
The Marburgers purchased the building after Five Barrel Bullet Brewing closed in the summer of 2024.
The couple had been looking to expand their business.
"It was important for us to stay in Tuscarawas County for several reasons. This is where we were raised, we live here, we have our family here and we thought reaching into the county a little bit further was an exciting opportunity," she said.
The Pilot Brewhouse will sell beer brewed at both the Bolivar and New Philadelphia locations. "The two breweries will work together. This brewery will purchase beer from Lockport in Bolivar. We will sell it here under that Lockport name. People

USA, MN: Foremost Brewing Cooperative to close its doors at the end of February
|
Another southern Minnesota brewery is closing its doors, Bring Me The News reported.
In a Facebook post on Monday, January 27, Foremost Brewing Cooperative in Owatonna announced its final day will be Friday, Feb. 28.
"This decision comes after careful consideration of our financial situation and several months of challenging business conditions," the post reads. "While we are immensely proud of what we've built together – the friendships formed, the memories made, and the unique brews Terrence has created – we must face the reality that continuing operations is no longer sustainable."
The brewpub will still host its annual BobFest on Feb. 22 and plans to remain open as supplies allows for one final week afterwards.
Anyone interested in buying the business is encouraged to inquire, according to the closing announcement. The property itself is listed by Colliers.
Other southern Minnesota breweries to close recently include Chaotic Good Brewing in Kasson and Mankato Brewery.

USA, CO: Incantation Brewing shuts down, closing two locations
|
Incantation Brewing at 4233 South Buckley Road in Aurora and Incantation Beer and Coffee at 415 South Cherokee Street in the Baker neighborhood announced on January 24 that it will close its doors during the weekend.
Saturday, January 25, will be the final day of coffee and beer service at its Denver taproom. The Aurora location is already marked on Google as permanently closed.
Sean Guerrero originally opened the Aurora taproom as Jade Mountain Brewery & Tea House in 2021, nabbing our Best of Denver pick for Best New Collaborative Brewery the following year. But in February 2024, Guerrero rebranded as Incantation, adding a heavy metal edge to the concept. He debuted the Baker location in the former Field and Forest space last August.
In a lengthy post on the brewery's website, Guerrero says the decision is the result of years of struggles at both Incantation and Jade Mountain.
In his statement, Guerrero notes that the seeds of the brewery were planted ten years ago while in China and that he opened “with the goal of creating something truly unique. I wanted to create something that no one had ever seen or tasted before.”
The first iteration of Jade Mountain was forged in a teahouse

USA, CT: Middletown’s Stubborn Beauty Brewing closing its doors
|
Stubborn Beauty Brewing in Middletown is closing its doors.
An emotional announcement was made Sunday, January 26 on social media.
The brew house is located at 180 Johnson St.
"We were going to say with great sadness — but that’s not true — -It's with great memories that we were always able to brew what we chose to and beyond humbled that you all actually enjoyed what went from our minds, to paper and eventually into your glass," the owners said.
They then added, "Stubborn will be closing its doors on February 2nd."
The plan is to be open Saturday. Feb 1 and Sunday, Feb 2.
"A lot of the original crew will be working the last day and we’d love to raise a glass in appreciation to all of you for making this a fantastic 10-year-long chapter in this crazy book," the owners said.

USA, MN: Fair State Brewing Cooperative to close down its St. Paul production facility
|
Fair State Brewing Cooperative is scaling back in a significant way.
In a memo sent to staff, obtained by Bring Me The News and confirmed by an employee, the brewery says it has continued to face "headwinds" after exiting Chapter 11 bankruptcy last summer. It will now close down its St. Paul production facility, a move that will include layoffs.
"We plan to sell our assets, transfer the lease to a third party, and wind down over the coming months," the letter from CEO Evan Sallee states, adding that the change will only impact its production facility and not its Minneapolis taproom.
Representatives for Fair State Brewing Cooperative did not respond to a request for comment.
The taproom and its small-batch brewery will remain open, according to the memo, as will Chef JohnMichael Lynch's Farina Rossa pizza counter, which recently began serving food in the taproom.
Lynch tells Bring Me The News that the changes won't impact Farina Rossa's taproom service.
Sallee's memo adds that Fair State will "create partnerships" to handle "large-scale production" of its most popular beers in an effort to keep them available outside of the taproom. "Favorites like Pils, Mirror Universe, and others will still be available year-round," the letter states.

USA, CO: Guanella Pass Brewing Company to close for good on February 2
|
Another popular brewery is set to close its doors in Colorado, and its one that's loved by locals and travelers, alike, Denver Gazette reported on January 28.
According to a social media post, Georgetown's Guanella Pass Brewing Company will be closing its doors at the end of business on Sunday, February 2. Its sister restaurant, Silverbrick Saloon, will close as well.
The brewery also used the announcement post to thank patrons who took part in the spot's "wonderful journey" over recent years. A specific reason for the closure was not provided. It's worth noting that the brewery was highly-rated, at 4.7 stars on Google Reviews.
Guanella Pass Brewing Company first opened in Georgetown in 2017, eventually expanding with a taproom in Empire in 2020 that stuck around until 2023. With Georgetown's location along I-70, the brewery was a popular spot for travelers looking for a break.
The closure of Guanella Pass Brewing Company follows multiple brewery closures in Colorado that have been announced in recent weeks. One notable closure was that of FH Beerworks in Colorado Springs, which had its beers on tap and in cans around the Pikes Peak region.
The craft brewing industry has been struggling nationwide in recent months, as rising production

USA, CT: Problem Solved Brewing Company announces closure at the end of March
|
A East Windsor brewery announced plans to shut its doors within the next two months and cited the decision to close up shop due to various challenges, CTPost reported on January .
Problem Solved Brewing Company, located at 2 North Rd. #4, said it will close at the end of March in a Facebook post.
"Many factors have gone into our decision but mainly the balancing of our full time jobs, family and the demands of the brewery have become increasingly challenging," the post said. "That coupled with the uncertain economy, changing market and signing of a lengthy lease just doesn’t make sense on paper at this time."
The post thanked the brewery's patrons and staff while also saying that they would let the public know "if things change" from the anticipated March closure. It also added all involved in the business were "looking forward" to "life's next chapter."
Co-Founder Alan Bukowinski said in a statement to CT Insider that the business' lease ends in April and anyone interested in buying any equipment should contact the brewery.
"We would love to sell the equipment and have someone take over the space provided they reach an agreement with the landlord," Bukowinski said. "We have really enjoyed

Austria: Austria to increase deposit on beer bottles
|
Austria is set to increase the deposit on beer bottles, marking the first hike in 40 years for this key component of its recycling system. Beginning February 2, 2025, the deposit will rise from the previous 9 cents to 20 cents per bottle. This change reflects growing concerns over the return rates of reusable glass bottles, which have dropped significantly, The Pinnacle Gazette reported on January 26.
The increase in deposit will particularly affect beer crates, which will now require a total deposit of seven euros for 20 bottles, combining 4 euros for the bottles themselves and 3 euros for the crate, according to reports from the Austrian Brewers Association.
"Consumers will not face disadvantages as they’ll be encouraged to appreciate glass and return it to the recycling loop," said Karl Schwarz, chairman of the Austrian Brewing Association, highlighting the need to reinvigorate the public's mentality around bottle returns.
Since the start of the year, Austria has also implemented deposits on single-use plastic bottles and drinks cans, which has resulted in mixed reactions among the public. Brewery representatives, like Josef Sigl from Upper Austria, expressed concerns over the declining willingness of Austrians to return their beer bottles.
"We’ve observed unfortunately, the return rates have
