A new brewery and distillery is set to bring more Southern flavor to Myrtle Beach, WMBF reported on January 3.
Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing Company, both based in Tennessee, announced plans on February 3 to bring a new joint location to Broadway at the Beach. Construction is now underway with an anticipated grand opening date of Spring 2026.
According to an announcement, features of the location will include a beer garden, full-service distillery, tasting rooms, guided tours, food and beverage offerings, and event spaces designed to host concerts, festivals, and private events.
“We’re incredibly excited to bring the Ole Smoky and Yee-Haw brands to Myrtle Beach,” Joe Baker, Founder of Ole Smoky Distillery and Yee-Haw Brewing said in a statement. “This vacation destination’s passion for great beverages and world-class entertainment makes it the perfect place for us to share our traditions and craft. We look forward to offering an experience that’s as rich and distinctive as our beer and spirits.”

USA, FL: Juicy Brewing Co is set to open a St. Petersburg location this February
|
Virginia’s Juicy Brewing Co is set to open a St. Petersburg location this February, in the same address where Avid Brew Company closed (1745 1st Ave. S), cltampa.com reported on February 3.
The Virginia brewing company gets its flavor from fruity sours and IPAs, offering smoothie-style beers such as the guava strawberry or banana passionfruit mango coconut sour.
The St. Petersburg location will be Juicy’s first brewery outside of Old Dominion.
According to the menu at the Virginia location, individual drafts come in a seven or 12-ounce glass, with four-pack to-go options on all beer options.
Juicy’s owners considered the Florida expansion after finding the former Avid Brew Co.’s listing online, according to St. Pete Rising, which said the location is supposed to open this month.
Avid Brew Co. was a staple in the local beer scene, opening its taproom in 2018. It hosted a last all-you-can-drink bash on Dec. 31, 2022, to celebrate several years in the community.

USA, NY: Mountain Roads Brewing to celebrate its grand opening on March 1
|
You'll have to cut Jacob Parlett some slack if he starts getting all philosophical about the beer he’s brewing for his soon-to-open Mountain Roads Brewing, Democrat and Chronicle reported on February 3.
Parlett worked as a software developer for a local company before deciding to enter the craft beer business. It’ll be just a few weeks until Mountain Roads opens in the Genesee Valley Regional Market.
A soft opening over the weekend for friends and family gave them a taste of what’s to come and just piled on the excitement for Parlett, who began brewing recipes at home two summers ago in anticipation for his new venture.
“If I look back at where I was a year ago, it feels like I’ve come a long way,” said Parlett, of Penfield. “If I look back to where I was four or five months ago, it feels like it’s crawled along.”
Parlett will be selling cans to go at Mountain Roads, which will celebrate a grand opening from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 1.

USA, IL: Moor’s Brewing to open its own brewpub in Chicago on February 5
|
Moor’s Brewing, one of Chicago’s few Black-owned craft breweries, is marking a major milestone this week, FOX 32 Chicago reported on February 4.
After three years of selling beer in bars and stores, the company is opening its own brewpub—just the second Black-owned establishment of its kind in the city.
Moor’s Brewing, founded by Damon Patton and Jamhal Johnson, is set to open Diversey House in Logan Square on Wednesday, February 5.
The brewpub is a partnership with Steep Ravine Brewing, which previously occupied the space under a different name. The timing is intentional, as the founders wanted to open at the start of Black History Month.
"We thought it would be super appropriate for us to open our first taproom during the month to pay homage to history," Johnson said. "Because we’re making history."
The brewpub will offer a sports bar atmosphere with a craft beer selection and food curated by three-time "Chopped" champion Marc Anthony Bynum.
"It's just like a match made in heaven," Bynum said. "I love cooking, they like making great beers. And we're here to pair it."
Patton and Johnson launched Moor’s Brewing three years ago with a simple goal: to put a Black man on a beer can.

USA, NY: The Real McCoy Beer Co. getting ready to open its newest location in Albany
|
The Real McCoy Beer Co. is getting ready to open its newest location in Slip 12 in Albany. Owner Mike Bellini said he’s looking to open in mid-March as they’re waiting on permitting and licensing, NEWS10 ABC reported on February 4.
It was first announced in May 2022 that Real McCoy Beer Co. would be opening in Slip 12, a mixed-use residential and retail facility in the former Huck Finn’s Warehouse. Other commercial tenants include Motor Oil Coffee and Huck Finn Home.
Bellini said the new location took a few years to open due to renovations with both the entire building and the Real McCoy space. The new space is a full restaurant, said Bellini, with seating for about 150 and an outdoor space for the summer months.
“The overall project was by Redburn Development,” said Bellini. “I don’t think it would’ve been possible without them.”
The Real McCoy Beer Co. was established in 2015 and is a New York farm brewery, meaning its ingredients are sourced from within New York State. The brewery has other locations in Delmar and Ballston Spa.

USA, FL: Oviedo Brewing Company closing its doors at the end of February
|
The Oviedo Brewing Company is closing its doors at the end of the month, according to a Facebook post, WKMG reported on February 4.
The brewing company posted that it will be closing on Feb. 28 after five years of serving the Oviedo community.
Located at the Oviedo Mall, the Oviedo Brewing Company is the only craft brewery in Oviedo and hosts an 8,000-square-foot space, including a tap room, brewhouse and full kitchen.
“The ongoing economic challenges, rising costs, and the lasting impacts of the pandemic have made it increasingly difficult for us to continue. We have fought tirelessly to keep our doors open, but the financial and emotional toll has been overwhelming. The effort to push forward has mentally drained us, and despite our best attempts, we have reached the difficult decision to close,” the post stated.
The brewery’s menu includes a variety of beers that are brewed in-house, sandwiches, wings and pizza.
The Oviedo Brewing Company invites its guests to join them in raising a glass and sharing stories before the closure.
The brewery first opened in 2019.

USA, TX: Alamo Beer files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
|
Alamo Beer Co., one of the region’s largest brewing businesses, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the Western District of Texas, ksat.com reported on February 4.
It’s a significant move that follows the closure or downsizing of multiple San Antonio beer-making businesses. And it comes just a few weeks shy of the 10-year mark for the company’s expansive East San Antonio brewery and beer hall operations.
Eugene Simor, who founded the company more than 20 years ago and timed the opening of its near-downtown facilities around Texas Independence Day celebrations in 2015, insists he has some fight left.
“The plan is to recapitalize, restructure and return stronger,” Simor said.

USA, OR: Culmination Brewing to close its doors on February 15
|
The craft beer industry is experiencing significant upheaval, with several popular establishments shutting down due to financial struggles and increased competition. Notably, Culmination Brewing, a northeast Portland brewery, is slated to close its doors on February 15, 2025, after major financial troubles and unfulfilled obligations to bondholders, The Pinnacle Gazette reported on February 1.
Tomas Sluiter, the founder of Culmination Brewing, initially announced the brewery's pending closure back in August 2023. Sluiter expressed concerns about being forced out of his CEO role by majority shareholders who brought in media personality Steven Shomler to spearhead efforts to save the brewery. Shomler began promoting the hashtag #abreweryworthsaving, hoping to galvanize support and investors to keep the establishment afloat. Despite this endeavor, the brewery's efforts to survive may be too little too late.
After 18 months of tumultuous operations, Culmination Brewing’s fortunes worsened, leading to its current closure. The brewery had initially raised $400,000 from 252 investors via the SMBX crowdfunding platform, allowing it to upgrade equipment and operations. Unfortunately, the expenses proved overwhelming, and the promised dividends never materialized, culminating in the platform's decision to send the brewery to collections.

Denmark: Non-alcoholic beer sales up 8.7% in 2024

Danish breweries sold 8.7% more non-alcoholic beer in 2024, compared to the year before, according to the latest data from Bryggeriforeningen (the Danish Brewers’ Association).
In December 2024, brewers in Denmark sold 27.3% more non-alcoholic beer to retailers than in an average month in 2024, the data showed.
On a month-on-month basis, non-alcoholic beer sales were 38.1% higher in December 2024.
Moreover, breweries sold 30% more non-alcoholic beer to stores in January, as consumers observed Hvid januar (White January).
“The additional sales of Hvid januar – White January – are a clear sign that the breweries are able to deliver an alcohol-free alternative that consumers are happy with,” stated Nick Hækkerup, director of the Danish Brewers’ Association.
Non-alcoholic beer sales have increased every year since 2014.
In 2024, sales increased to just over nine million litres, which is close to a fivefold increase in ten years.
Danish brewers are also offering a wider range of non-alcoholic beers.
In 2024, the members of the Danish Brewers’ Association brewed approximately 78 different non-alcoholic beers, which is ten more than they brewed in the previous year.

The president of the National Union of the Beer Industry (Sindicerv), which represents 85% of beer producers, confirmed that significant progress was made in the brewing sector in 2024, FreshlyBottled.com reported on January 31.
One of the most notable events was the approval of tax reform regulations.
"The text accepted by deputies and senators will bring to Brazil the best model of progressive taxation of alcoholic beverages, which is based on the alcoholic content," said the Sindicerv president in a statement.

Korea's soju and beer companies claim the ban on online liquor sales is hurting their market competitiveness, as imported liquors have grown their pies in the market, The Korea Times reported on February 5.

The liquor companies complain that the ban does not apply to imported liquors like wine, whisky and sake. They are available online once buyers verify they are at least 19, Korea's legal drinking age.
Vendors then place the ordered liquors at designated pickup points — usually alcohol retailers — where consumers can collect them in person.
Liquors registered as traditional products in Korea, such as "makgeolli" (rice wine) and Andong soju, are exempt from the online sales ban, allowing them to be delivered directly to consumers' doorsteps.
In contrast, domestic soju and beer products are only accessible via offline stores and restaurants. Major local producers argue that lifting the ban would expand their distribution channels and improve market competitiveness.

Belgium: Strike breaks out at AB InBev brewery in Hoegaarden

A strike broke out at AB InBev in Hoegaarden on February 4, according to the ACV union and confirmed by company management, The Brussels Times reported.
Approximately 150 out of the total 215 employees are expected to participate in the strike.
The immediate cause is the dismissal of an employee. "She had been with the company for 35 years and was close to retirement. She handled payroll and was a trusted confidante within the company," said ACV secretary Sander Mouton. "Her dismissal has upset a large group of employees, and she has substantial support."
About 80-90% of the morning shift did not work on February 4. Overall, 150 of the 215 employees, or about 70%, are expected to strike throughout the day. The unions were holding a staff meeting on February 4 afternoon.
"We regret the strike by some of the brewery staff in Hoegaarden due to the termination of an individual employee," AB InBev responded. "We hope to resolve this situation quickly through constructive dialogue. Our customer deliveries are not affected."
In recent years, there has been recurring social unrest at the Hoegaarden brewery. There was a spontaneous strike in October and a week-long work stoppage last January.

Carlton & United Breweries' CEO has announced he's quitting the company after its top-selling Great Northern Beer was hit by a furious backlash over a promotional campaign, Daily Mail reported on February 4.
Danny Celoni, chief executive of CUB's business division since 2022, revealed he is leaving the brewer - now owned by Japanese giant Asahi - to pursue new opportunities.
The announcement comes after drinkers vowed to boycott CUB's Great Northern beer - Australia's biggest-selling brand - in a bizarre row over the funding of new national parks.
The brewer, which aims its ads at outdoor enthusiasts, started the campaign to raise money to support the new parks on January 15 and planned to run it until March 31.
Great Northern had vowed to match any donation up to $200,000 when customers gave to the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife.
But the company abandoned the campaign after activist drinkers vowed to boycott it, claiming more national parks would limit access for 4WD vehicles to remote spots.
On February 3, Asahi - the Japanese giant behind Great Northern - announced Mr Celoni had decided to leave the business, but dismissed any link to the current protest campaign.

UK: Suntory Global Spirits launches standalone commercial business in the UK

Suntory Global Spirits has launched a standalone commercial business in the UK, Drinks Retailing reported on February 3.
The company, called Suntory Global Spirits UK, is responsible for the sales, marketing, and distribution of brands including Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Hibiki, Yamazaki, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Roku, and Sipsmith.
Suntory Global Spirits already holds distilling operations in the UK, as the producer of Laphroaig, Bowmore, Ardmore, Auchentoshan, Glen Garioch, and Ardray Scotch whiskies, as well as Sipsmith gin.
The new UK operation will be led by Nick Temperley, managing director for the UK, Ireland, and Eastern Europe.
As well as Temperley, Suntory Global Spirits UK will have a team in its central London head office, with additional staff in Scotland and across the country.
Temperley commented: “We are incredibly proud to begin this new era for Suntory Global Spirits in the UK. We have put together a hugely energetic, experienced, and talented team, and they will be out in the market every day, building true partnerships with all our customers.
“The UK is a dynamic, sophisticated, and competitive market. We see significant growth opportunities within the categories where we are strongest, particularly in Japanese spirits, Scotch, and American whiskey.”
