Brewery news USA: Alumium tariff to send ripples through beer and many other industries
President Donald Trump's announcement on February 10 of a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports into the U.S. is likely to send ripples through multiple industries, including the beer sector, MSN reported on February 10.

The tariffs, effective immediately, are expected to affect manufacturing and production costs, particularly for businesses that rely heavily on aluminum for packaging.

Aluminum, a key component in the production of beer cans, has already been affected by tariffs in previous years. In 2018, the Trump administration imposed a 10% tariff on aluminum imports, which raised the price of cans and created a financial burden for many brewers. The new 25% tariff could escalate costs further, posing challenges for brewers as they navigate an already unpredictable market.

The beer industry is no stranger to price hikes due to material costs. As one of the largest consumers of aluminum, the affect on beer manufacturers could be significant, especially for those with a heavy reliance on canned products. While many breweries have adapted to the previous tariffs, this increase in steel and aluminum costs comes at a particularly delicate time, as the industry is still recovering from the pandemic's effect on production and distribution.

As the price of aluminum ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Wild Yarrow Brewing getting ready to open in Greenville
Aaron Dowling, owner of the soon-to-open Wild Yarrow Brewing on Stone Avenue in Greenville, has been brewing beer for quite some time, Upstate Business Journal reported on February 11.

Dowling is a longtime hospitality professional that moved into the production side at New Anthem Brewing in 2017. The now-shuttered brewery got him his start professionally but his foundation as a brewer started long before that by experimenting with his own brews at home.

“You have to make a lot of mistakes first,” he said. “And then I just had a lot of time just reading everything I could get my hands on and learning the ingredients.”

Wild Yarrow will open in the former Tetrad Brewing Company space at 603 E. Stone Ave. which closed shop in June 2024. Dowling contacted commercial real estate firm Trinity Partners when he heard the space was available, seizing on the chance to move his first brewery into a building that was already fit for the operation.

Dowling’s goal is to make nuanced but counterpoised beers – something that would enamor the seasoned cicerone but also be welcome on the palette of someone just looking for a refreshing brew after work. His favorite part of the process is reverse ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Revolver Brewing ceases operations at original Granbury location
In November of last year, Revolver Brewing in Granbury celebrated its 12th anniversary with a tasting event, live music, and food trucks. Late last Sunday night (February 9), P.J. Milly, a brewer and scientist at Revolver, posted on LinkedIn that his team has "concluded all major operations" at the brewery, Dallas Observer reported.

Back in 2012, Revolver Brewing unquestionably helped elevate the craft beer scene in North Texas with its trademark beer: Blood and Honey. Sweet and gritty in name, texture and flavor, it was an essential gateway beer guiding many drinkers to the craft beer side. Along with several other local beers — Peticolas' Velvet Hammer, Deep Ellum's Dallas Blonde, Community's Mosaic and Lakewood's Temptress — the North Texas craft beer scene was birthed. Dallas rallied behind them all.

The brewery, about an hour southwest of Fort Worth, is nestled in rolling hills and tapped into well water, a crucial element in the production of the original beer. We liked that sediment often found at the bottom of the beer bottles — it had grit.

In 2016, Revolver was bought out by a division of MillerCoors. A couple of years later, they expanded to the Ballpark in Arlington, with a smaller brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Conspiracy Theory Brewing closes its doors permanently
An Ottawa craft brewery has closed its doors permanently, citing “the current economic situation”, CTV News reported on February 8.

Conspiracy Theory Brewing announced the closure of the restaurant and the brewery in Bells Corners on Facebook.

“Due to economic uncertainty and future, we have to close our doors effective today,” the statement said.

“We have tried to pursue every option available to us and the risk is too high for ourselves and to our suppliers. It has been amazing time, and I cannot thank the staff and customers enough.”

In a statement to CTV News Ottawa, owner Paul Card said due to the current economic situation, Conspiracy Theory Brewing was “having difficulty finding enough money to pay the increasing costs of salaries, suppliers and lease.”

“Over the last year we have fallen behind on the rent and the landlord has decided the risk is too high for us to continue and locked the doors. We were hoping that the landlord would have supported us through the spring to see if things could turn around, especially with the U.S. and (President Donald Trump) situation may have played into our flavour.”

A notice of termination from The Strongman Group was on the door of Conspiracy Theory Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Back Shed Brewing to close after March 1st

The brewery announced on Facebook it will have its Back Shed's Minnesota Goodbye for its last day of operation. The event will have a food truck, Bingo, meat raffle, live music, and more. Back Shed says it has been an amazing three and a half years and they are going out with a bang.

Brewery news India: Beer industry contributed 0.3% to India’s GDP in 2023
The Indian beer industry contributed Rs 92,324 crore (USD 10.6 billion) to the country's economy in 2023, which represented 0.3 per cent of the national GDP, said Brewers Association of India citing a study conducted by Oxford Economics.

This is part of the Rs 76.45 lakh crore (USD 878 billion) poured into the global GDP by the beer industry globally, according to the report.

Brewers' direct contribution in India stood at Rs 40,050 crore (USD 4.6 billion) and over Rs 52,239 crore (USD 6 billion) by the downstream value chain.

The beer industry also supported public finances as the sector contributed Rs 51,376 crore (USD 5.9 billion) in tax revenues through excise, sales taxes, other taxes, and the taxes paid by the downstream value chain.

"This is 1.8 per cent of the government tax revenues," the statement said.

Besides, the beer industry supported 0.3 per cent of national employment. It generated 13 lakh jobs, of which 5.4 lakh jobs were directly by the brewers, while 7.8 lakh were by those involved in downstream value chains like logistics, restaurants, retailers, etc, it added.

Brewers Association of India (BAI) Director General Vinod Giri said: "Beer is entirely a local product. It is also a high-volume product by nature ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: Beer industry contributed massive R96.46bn into South Africa’s GDP in 2023
In 2023, the local beer industry poured a massive R96.46bn into South Africa’s GDP, contributed R56.5bn in tax revenue, and supported 209,000 jobs, according to the latest Oxford Economics study, “Beer’s Global Economic Footprint”, BizCommunity reported on February 7.

The study, recently released, was commissioned by the World Brewing Alliance (WBA).

Justin Kissinger, president and CEO of the WBA, says, “The beer industry has a huge, positive impact on the global economy, supporting a robust value chain that includes farmers, bottlers, shippers, and the hospitality sector. What makes beer unique is that it is deeply rooted within its local markets, benefiting local economies and communities. This report shows that beer is not just one of the most enjoyed drinks around the world, but one of the most valuable industries too.”

The Beer Association of South Africa (Basa) supported the local arm of the research.

Charlene Louw, CEO of Basa, emphasises how essential the industry is to South Africans. “I am so proud to lead an association that represents such a vital and impactful industry. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our members, we’re not only driving economic growth but literally putting food on the table for thousands of South Africans,” she says.

Barley news Australia: Both feed and malting barley exports down in December
Australia exported 679,112 tonnes of barley and 45,809t of sorghum in December, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on February 11.

The barley figure comprises 498,458t of feed and 180,654t of malting, both down from the November totals of 600,437t and 233,340t respectively.

On feed barley, China on 258,230t accounted for more than half of the December total, followed by surprise re-entrant Saudi Arabia on 150,000t, and Japan on 66,000t.

On malting barley, China on 127,711t followed by South Africa on 46,411t and Singapore on 2363t were the three biggest customers.

The shipment of 29,395t to Kenya made it the biggest customer for December-shipped sorghum, followed by China on 11,072t, and Taiwan on 3720t.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said Saudi’s purchase of 30 percent of Australia’s December feed barley exports points to the global tightness in barley, and Australia’s “very competitive pricing relative to other origin countries”.

“Added to 66,000t to Japan and we have one of our most diverse demand months in recent times,” Mr Roache said.

On malting, Mr Roache said South Africa being in for a large shipment of 50,000t further evidences Australia’s overall competitiveness versus other origins, and has added to higher grain ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Hatz-Moninger to build new brewery in Karlsruhe
Following the sale of its production site to Paulaner, which was announced earlier in February, Hatz-Moninger, a subsidiary of the privately owned Scheidtweiler Group of breweries, is set to build a new brewery in Karlsruhe, Inside.beer reported.

The current Hatz-Moninger brewery produces approximately 70,000 hectolitres of its beer brands Moninger and Hatz, as well as around 130,000 hectolitres of contract fillings, including Ratskrone for Edeka. While the Moninger and Hatz brands will remain with the Scheidtweiler Group, the brewery itself has been sold to Paulaner, which intends to repurpose the capacity for its growing non-alcoholic beverage business, particularly the production of its popular soda Spezi. In November 2022 Paulaner acquired the 1.8 million hectolitre brewery in Gotha from Oettinger, which was threatened with closure, and relocated the production of Spezi from Munich to Gotha.

The existing brewery in Karlsruhe-Grünwinkel had become too large for Hatz-Moninger, prompting the sale to Paulaner. Until the new Hatz-Moninger brewery is operational, Paulaner will continue brewing Hatz-Moninger beers under a transitional agreement.

The new brewery will be located in a historic silo building on the same site, preserving the early 20th-century industrial façade while transforming it into an "experience brewery" with a visitor center and gastronomy. The investment ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Telangana allows beer price increase weeks after row with United Breweries
India's top beer-consumer state Telangana has allowed beer prices to be increased from Tuesday, February 11, weeks after a brief halt in supply by Heineken's Indian unit United Breweries over pricing issues, Yahoo Finance reported.

The order also directed that all existing stock be sold at the revised rates from February 11.

In January, the Kingfisher beer manufacturer halted the supply of beer briefly, and resumed following "constructive" talks with the government, which assured it would address the pricing and dues in a "time bound manner."

United Breweries dominates the market in the southern state of Telangana with a 70% share.

The company, in its January 8 decision, said it had decided to halt supply over delayed payments and a lack of government approval for higher prices since 2019/20, which hurt its finances.

India is the world's eighth-biggest alcohol market by volume, and states individually regulate the pricing of alcohol products, which are major contributors to their tax revenue.

Alcohol is bought by the state government and then supplied to stores in Telangana, where officials had rationed supplies to deter hoarding and tackle shortages.

Brewers Association of India (BAI), a federation of some of the country's largest beer makers, said it welcomed the hike in beer prices ...More info on site

Whisky news India: United Spirits to close its 160-year-old manufacturing facility in Hyderabad
The Indian arm of Diageo, United Spirits, will close its 160-year-old manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, Telangana, due to ‘evolving market dynamics and ageing infrastructure’, The Spirits Business reported.

On 5 February, the company revealed its plan to close the factory, located in the Industrial Development Area of Nacharam in Hyderabad.

The company set 31 July 2025 as its estimated date of closure for the facility, subject to statutory approvals.

Headquartered in Bangalore, United Spirits said the Nacharam facility had contributed 1.5% to the company’s revenue from operations during the 2023-24 financial year.

Explaining its reason to cease operations of the plant, the company said it was part of a multi-year supply chain agility programme that was approved by the board of directors at the start of 2023.

On 8 February, United Spirits released another statement to address the media reports surrounding the closure of the plant.

The company clarified that the facility has been operational for approximately 160 years, claiming it plays a ‘crucial role in the region’s industrial landscape’.

The statement said: “Over the years, the unit has experienced significant challenges including evolving market dynamics and ageing infrastructure.

“In light of these challenges, the company is currently reviewing its internal business strategies, and no decisions have been ...More info on site

Brewery news Kenya: Windhoek launched in Kenya to expand premium beer offering
Kenya Wine Agencies Limited (KWAL) has launched Windhoek Beer in Kenya, expanding its premium beer portfolio to meet the rising demand for high-quality brews, AllAfrica.com reported on February 7.

Brewed in Namibia, Windhoek adheres to the German Beer Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516, using only three natural ingredients - malted barley, hops, and water - without additives or artificial ingredients.
