Trade, tariffs and Trump have dominated the agricultural news headlines for the first five weeks of 2025, The Western Producer reported on February 13.
Lost in the all the noise is that corn futures have climbed and are now trading around US$5 per bushel.
The March corn contract on the Chicago Board of Trade was above US$4.90 per bu. during the first week of February.
Meanwhile, the May futures contract has topped $5 per bu. – its highest level since the fall of 2023.
Mike Jubinville, senior markets analyst with Glacier MarketsFarm, noticed in January that corn was gaining momentum.
“The corn market lifting off its lows and coming up to one-year highs,” Jubinville said at Manitoba Ag Days in Brandon last month.
“If this thing (corn) seems to be making a move, will it drag the other commodities, oilseeds and wheat with it?”
Considering the uncertainly around U.S. president Donald Trump and American trade policies, it’s nearly impossible to predict the future trajectory for commodity markets.
However, there was positive news for corn and the larger market for feed grains on Feb. 6.
The Mexican government changed its position on genetically modified corn imports, saying measures to prohibit the use of GM corn in Mexico were “ineffective.”

Good Liquid Brewing Company is continuing its impressive expansion with a new brewery, distillery, and restaurant set to open in Bradenton, Florida. This marks a significant milestone for the rapidly growing brewery, which currently operates at Waterside Place in Lakewood Ranch and a third at Creekside Commons in Parrish. The new Bradenton location will be situated at 1008 Fourth Ave., The Suncoast Post reported on February 12.
According to plan review documents submitted by GL Distillery BRA, LLC, the new venue is confirmed to open soon, with official details available on Good Liquid Brewing’s website. The project was approved in late spring, and the opening has generated buzz, with the Bradenton Herald covering the news.
The new location is designed to complement the already vibrant Bradenton area, catering to both locals and tourists alike. Canada: Feed barley prices strengthening in Western Canada
|
Feed barley prices in Western Canada were strengthening in early February, although activity was somewhat limited given the threat of tariffs from the United States still overhanging the North American markets, Grainews reported on February 13.
Feed barley into the key Lethbridge feeding area was priced at C$305 to C$310 per tonne as of Feb. 7, according to the Alberta government’s weekly market review. That was up by about C$5 per tonne over the past month.
Meanwhile, delivered corn prices rose by a similar amount over that time, coming in at roughly C$334 per tonne into Lethbridge in early February.
Canadian imports of U.S. corn remain well off what was coming up a year ago, with only 77,300 tonnes imported as of Feb. 6 during the marketing year that began at the start of September, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. That compares with 533,900 tonnes at the same point a year ago. In addition, there are only 35,200 tonnes of outstanding U.S. corn sales to Canada, well below the 283,500 tonnes on the books at the same time a year ago.

USA, SC: River Dog Brewing Co. permanently shuts its doors in Ridgeland
|
Ridgeland’s River Dog Brewing Co. permanently shut its doors on Feb. 8 after 12 years of business. The business announced its closing on Feb. 5 through a post on Facebook, with frequent guests and locals flooding the comments with messages to say goodbye.
River Dog Brewing Co. stated that the closure comes as many of their family members had reached retirement and others needed more time to be with family.
The microbrewery was known for its homemade draft beers, unique flights and pints. They even offered tours of their brewery facility to guests so they could learn about the microbrewery process.
This small but mighty brewery had about 12 different beers on tap that ranged in flavor, so there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Some of the fan-favorite brews included their pilsners, the Edisto Gold, Pappy Van Winkle and River Dog IPA. River Dog Brewing Co. has also won awards for many of its brews, including a gold medal from the Great American Beer Festival for its 3 Barrel Circus.
Reviews and visitors mentioned in their comments that whenever they brought their kids, River Dog served them root beer so they could still join in on the fun.

USA, WI: Cercis Brewing Company announces last day of service on February 16
|
A brewing company in Columbus will be shutting down operations this weekend. Cercis Brewing Company recently announced online that their last day of service will be on February 16th, Daily Dodge reported.
Officials with the business say this was a difficult decision, but due to many challenges, they can no longer sustain operations.
They add that they are proud of the special place that Cercis has become for so many. Over the years, the brewery hosted many community activities including music events, art classes, book discussions, family anniversaries, weddings, and class reunions.
The brewery also thanked their dedicated team of cooks, dishwashers, bartenders, servers, and cleaning staff, as well as former employees who were with them throughout the years.
The business notes that the craft brewing industry is becoming more challenging every day and they urge the public to support the many local area and statewide breweries that continue to brew delicious beer.

USA, CA: Sequoia Brewing Company to close all three of its locations in Central Valley
|
Sequoia Brewing Company will close all three of its locations in the Central Valley on February 16, according to news and social media reports.
The longtime brewpub has locations in north Fresno, the Tower District and Visalia.
An employee on February 13 confirmed the impending closure of the Tower location.
Sequoia Brewing Company has been a staple in the Central Valley since 2000, when it acquired local favorite Butterfield Brewing.
Longtime owners Scott and Michelle Kendall sold the business to Jeremy and Allison Smith, a married couple, in 2020.
Attempts to reach the owner were unsuccessful on February 13.
A social media post from a longtime bartender said the company has filed for bankruptcy, but no filing for parent company J&A Mash Barrel, LLC, in federal bankruptcy court could be located Thursday.
Fresno County Superior Court records show that the property owner of the North Fresno location sued to evict Sequoia Brewing in August 2024.
Bartender Eric Buterbaugh’s social media post also suggested the closures were because the owner Smith “horrifically mismanaged his life and a very solid thriving business.”
An age discrimination lawsuit filed by former employee James Tomlinson against Sequoia Brewing Company in September 2024 contains allegations of mismanagement.

World: Heineken announces first tranche of its €1.5 billion share buyback programme

Heineken N.V. (HEINEKEN) announced on February 13 the start of the first €750 million tranche of its €1.5 billion two-year share buyback programme as communicated on 12 February 2025.
Heineken Holding N.V. (Heineken Holding), HEINEKEN's majority shareholder, will participate pro rata to its shareholding in HEINEKEN's share buyback programme on a daily basis, pursuant to an agreement between HEINEKEN and Heineken Holding. The price per HEINEKEN share payable to Heineken Holding will be the volume-weighted average price of the shares acquired by HEINEKEN on market as part of the programme on the relevant day. HEINEKEN and Heineken Holding have entered into an arrangement to ensure Heineken Holding's participation in HEINEKEN's share buyback programme is implemented in conformity with Heineken Holding's articles of association.
The first tranche of the HEINEKEN share buyback programme is expected to be completed no later than 30 January 2026, or so much earlier as the amount dedicated to the first tranche has been spent, barring unforeseen circumstances. All shares that are repurchased under the programme will be cancelled. The share buyback programme may be suspended, modified, or discontinued at any time.

The Czech Republic: Czech brewers export record volume last year
|
Czech breweries exported a record 6.13 million hectolitres of beer last year, the Czech Statistical Office announced in Prague on February 14.
The largest volumes of Czech beer were consumed in Slovakia, Germany, Poland and Russia.
Tomás Slunecko, executive chairman of the Czech Breweries Association, drew attention to the fact that beer consumption has been steadily increasing in recent years even in countries that were previously known for consuming wine or other alcoholic beverages.
“A good example of this is Spain, Portugal and France. In these countries, Czech beer is also becoming increasingly popular alongside local beers,” the president told reporters.
He explained that the demand for Czech beer is partly due to the fact that products from Czech breweries, such as the best-known product of the long-established Japanese-owned Pilsen brewery Prazdroj, Pilsner Urquell, are sold at affordable prices abroad. “It is unfortunate that the prices of many popular beers have risen too much at home (in the Czech Republic), which has led to stagnation or a decrease in demand,” the beer industry expert noted.
The state-owned Budejovicky Budvar brewery last year delivered a record 1.9 million hectolitres of beer to its foreign customers, representing 70 percent of its production.

South Korea: Non-alcoholic beer gaining momentum in South Korea
|
Non-alcoholic beverages are increasingly becoming a buzzword among drinkers in Korea, with those in their 20s and 30s leading the trend. Non-alcoholic drinks in Korea contain less than 1 percent alcohol, while alcohol-free drinks are below 0.05 percent alcohol, The Korea Times reported on February 13.
The trend reflects the shift in young consumers' drinking culture, favoring healthier options over getting excessively drunk and feeling sick later on. Beer companies have begun introducing non-alcoholic products to cater to this trend, which is not limited to Korea. Globally, the trend is gaining momentum, with new terms like "NoLo" (non- or low-alcohol) and "sober curious" emerging.
The most evident sign of the nonalcohol trend is that breweries of all sizes here have begun releasing non-alcoholic products and focusing their marketing on the emerging consumer trend.
Lotte Chilsung Beverage, one of the country's top three beer companies, released Kloud Non Alcoholic last month, with an alcohol content of less than 1 percent. It still retains the flavor of the original Kloud, according to the company.

India: United Breweries may raise beer prices further in India's Telangana
|
United Breweries may raise beer prices further in India's Telangana, a top official said, days after the country's largest beer-consuming state permitted brands to do so for the first time in five years, The Economic Times reported on February 14.
The southern Indian state's decision on February 11 came as a much-needed reprieve for the company, which had briefly halted its supply to the state.
The Kingfisher beer maker, majority-owned by Dutch liquor giant Heineken, had earlier this year said it was facing delayed payments and a lack of government approval for price increases for about five years.
The company has a 70% market share in Telangana and brings in 15% to 20% of its revenue from the state, where it is currently not profitable.
United Breweries is "not fully out of the red" in Telangana, CEO Vivek Gupta said on an earnings call, adding that the company expects another price increase in the state in the "very, very near foreseeable future".
Separately, United Breweries also said beer sales in January was weak, partly due to the supply halt in Telangana, even as it added sales had rebounded in February. It did not directly quantify the impact of the supply halt.
