Ukraine: Beer and cider account for more than 90% of Ukraine’s low-alcohol drinks market
|
Monitoring of the low-alcohol drinks market in Ukraine indicates significant changes in the sector, which are due to both global trends and the peculiarities of domestic consumption, agronews.ua reported on February 20.
By 2015, beer was the undisputed leader, covering 90% of the market. The remaining 10% was accounted for by other categories of low-alcohol beverages, which were mainly consumed by women and people who did not prefer beer.
However, since 2015, the market has been experiencing a “cider boom”. New products such as Apps and Garage have quickly gained popularity and have taken 30–40% of the segment, pushing other low-alcohol beverages out of the market. Today, the main competition is between beer and cider, while the share of classic low-alcohol beverages continues to decline.
The low-alcohol drinks market in Ukraine is controlled by two main companies:
New Products Group – 66%
Obolon – 33%
The war significantly affected production indicators. In March 2022, Obolon produced only 6,5% of the volume of the same period in 2021, but a gradual recovery began in April. After a temporary downtime in March 2022, the New Products Group resumed the production of bottled water and energy bars, and in April-May it returned to full-fledged production of low-alcohol beverages.

EU & UK: Carlsberg issues notes for a principal amount of EUR 4 bln and GBP 500 mln
|
Carlsberg Breweries A/S successfully placed on February 19 the following bonds:
• 2-year EUR notes in floating rate format for a principal amount of EUR 850m with a coupon of 3-month Euribor + 40 basis points
• 4.5-year EUR notes in fix rate format for a principal amount of EUR 1,000m with a coupon of 3.00%
• 7-year EUR notes in fix rate format for a principal amount of EUR 1,000m with a coupon of 3.25%
• 10-year EUR notes in fix rate format for a principal amount of EUR 1,150m with a coupon of 3.50%
• 14-year GBP notes in fix rate format for a principal amount of GBP 500m with a coupon of 5.50%
The notes have been issued under the company’s Euro Medium Term Notes (EMTN) programme and will be listed on the regulated market of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
The proceeds of the offering will be used to repay bank debt associated with the acquisition of Britvic plc and general corporate purposes.
Carlsberg met strong interest during the transaction with more than 90 investors joining calls with the Company and peak orderbooks for the bond offering north of EUR 20bn, equivalent split across the tenors.
BNP PARIBAS, Danske Bank, Nordea, SEB, Société Générale and UniCredit acted as joint bookrunners.

UK: Sout experiencing surprising rise in UK beer market
|
Stout is experiencing a surprising rise in the UK beer market, defying broader industry trends with a surge in popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic. While overall beer sales in the UK have declined, stout has seen a strong upswing, driven by media coverage, social media trends, and shifting consumer preferences, Vinetur reported on February 20.
According to IWSR, a global authority on beverage alcohol data, stout volumes in the UK grew by 24% between 2019 and 2023, with a 12% increase in 2023 alone. This contrasts sharply with the overall UK beer market, which saw a 6% decline over the same period. Stout, premium-plus world lagers, and no-alcohol beers are the only beer segments currently experiencing growth. Initially, IWSR projected a 6% volume increase for stout in 2024, but given recent trends, these figures may be revised upward. Between 2023 and 2028, stout is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2%, even as the broader beer market is predicted to shrink at a CAGR of -1%.

Australia: Sydney Brewery to increase production with Rocks Brewing takeover
|
The Schwartz Family Company (SFC), which owns Sydney Brewery, has acquired the Rocks Brewing Company, including its productions facilities and restaurant/bar in Sydney’s Alexandria, Beer & Brewer reported on February 18.
Rocks Brewing entered into voluntary administration in October 2024. It will now be incorporated into the operations of Sydney Brewery, with the brewery and restaurant re-branded as Sydney Brewery Alexandria, complementing Sydney Brewery Surry Hills and the Sydney Brewery production facility at Lovedale in the Hunter Valley.
SFC director Dr Jerry Schwartz said that after a difficult 2024 that saw multiple breweries enter voluntary administration, the increase in the Sydney Brewery facilities was a good-news story for the industry.
“Last year was a very difficult year for the craft brewing industry, but Sydney Brewery bucked the trend, and we have been urgently seeking extra capacity to produce our craft beers,” said Dr Schwartz.
“Our Sydney Brewery and restaurant in Surry Hills has been very popular and we believe that we can make Sydney Brewery Alexandria similarly popular with locals and visitors. We will be looking to sell the remainder of the Rocks Brewing stock and then start producing the Sydney Brewery range from the Alexandria site.”

Bulgaria: Carlsberg Bulgaria now canning its own beer

For the first time ever, Carlsberg Bulgaria is canning its own beer — thanks to technology from KHS, Food Processing reported on February 21.
The making of beer has been a long tradition in Bulgaria. Back in 1882, brewer Franz Milde opened what’s now one of Bulgaria’s oldest breweries in the city of Shumen in the east of the country. Nationalised in 1944, Shumensko Pivo, as the company called itself, produced around 350,000 hectolitres of beer per year in the 1960s — in part with the aid of a filling system imported from the former German Democratic Republic. Re-privatised in 1999, Shumensko became part of the Carlsberg Group in 2002 — together with Pirinsko Pivo, which was established in 1967. Based in Blagoevgrad, near the border with North Macedonia and Greece, this company was already brewing around 400,000 hectolitres of beer per year by 1980.
In 2004, the two entities merged under the name of Carlsberg Bulgaria to create one of the country’s leading beverage companies. Today, the two sites jointly fill well over two million hectolitres of beer per year. UK: English malt plans could be 'devastating' for Scotch whisky, Scotland’s Rural Affairs Secretary warns
|
Scotland’s Rural Affairs Secretary is to challenge the UK Government over plans industry leaders insist could be “very damaging for the reputation of single malt whisky”, Yahoo News UK reported on February 20.
Mairi Gougeon confirmed she will raise the issue with Westminster in the wake of an outcry over its proposed definition of English single malt whisky.
It comes as the UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is considering making an application for protected geographic status for English single malt.
This proposes defining English single malt as being made from “UK grain at an English distillery using water local to the distillery”.
The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) however has protested that this “only requires distillation at the single distillery location and not the creation of the spirit from malted barley at a single site”.
The SWA said: “This is entirely inconsistent with the reputation of single malt whisky, which is famous for its integral connection to place, and would undermine the single malt Scotch whisky category.
