USA, VA: AB InBev to invest $4.2 mln in its Willamsburg brewery
|
Anheuser-Busch, a leading American manufacturer and maker of Michelob ULTRA, Busch Light, Budweiser, Bud Light, and Stella Artois, announced on March 5 a new $4.2 million investment in its Williamsburg brewery. Over the last five years, Anheuser-Busch has invested $2 billion in its breweries across the country to help create and sustain jobs and drive economic prosperity in the communities where it operates and its employees call home.
This latest investment in its Williamsburg brewery will ensure A-B remains at the forefront of brewing excellence in the region and continues to create and sustain good-paying manufacturing jobs in the American beer industry. Today’s announcement builds on continuous investments Anheuser-Busch has made to its Virginia facility, including a $6.5 million investment in 2024.
Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, stated, “Investing in the American communities where our people live and work is part of who we are. USA, CA: Karl Strauss Brewing Co. reopening historic brewpub in downtown San Diego
|
Karl Strauss Brewing Co. announced the re-opening of its downtown San Diego location after a comprehensive remodel. The original brewpub first opened in February 1989 as the city’s first post-prohibition brewery. The 4,900‑sq‑ft space now shines with modern updates and historic nods. The remodel took place in December and January. On October 1, 2023, the company acquired the property. From the press release:
“Taking ownership of our original downtown brewery is more than a business decision — it’s a declaration of who we are,” said Co-Founder Matt Rattner. “This is where we started San Diego’s craft beer movement in 1989 with the courage to build something new. The renovations reflect that same spirit — making the brewhouse the symbolic centerpiece showing that brewing is our core. Ownership and the new interior decor for this property lets us chart our future on our own terms, ensuring this home — our first brave step—will continue to inspire the next generation of craft beer lovers.”
The brewpub also features a small seven‑barrel brewing system with two 14‑barrel fermenters for on‑site research and development.

USA, WA: Breakside Brewery aims to open at the former Locust Cider space in Vancouver
|
According to an article from New School Beer, Breakside Brewery aims to open at the former Locust Cider space in Vancouver at 700 Washington Street, WhatNow reported on February 28.
“By the end of April 2025, Breakside will have their first location outside of Oregon as they take over the space formerly occupied by Locust Cider in downtown Vancouver, Washington. Breakside had been looking at opening a Washington location for some time, and got very close to securing a spot in Camas.”
“The Breakside Vancouver taproom is about 2,000 sq. ft., with 60 indoor seats, 10 bar seats, and 20 outdoor seats. It will operate as a full-service Breakside, similar to their locations in NW Slabtown and the original NE Dekum pub. The branding will be clean but similar, with a colorful wraparound mural above the bar.”
“The drinks will highlight 16 taps of Breakside beer, cider, cocktails, and soon Breakside’s own wine label Alit. One thing that will be a little different in Vancouver, a food menu catering to the lunch crowd with stacked sub sandwiches and quality local bread, along with salads and Breakside’s beloved giant pretzel.”

USA, NJ: Brotherton Brewing Company to close at the end of March
|
Popular Brotherton Brewing Company announced on March 3 that they'll be closing at the end of this month, with the final day being March 30, 97.3 ESPN reported.
Sharing the news via its social media sites, the Brotheroton Brewery team didn't give a specific reason for closing but thanked its employees and customers for 10 amazing years in business.
"It has been one hell of a ride. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of it." The brewery stated in the post.
The letter, written by owners Keith, Dan, and The Brotherton Brewing Company Team, says the time has come for them to move on.
"We could have never imagined that this small business venture, which started in 2015 with five friends in a backyard barn, would have evolved into this.
They will remain open for the rest of the month and even have some vents planned from now til the end of the month.
Brotherton Brewery opened at the historic Atco Firehouse at 2208 Atco Ave in Atco, right off the White Horse Pike.

USA, MI: Creston Brewery closes in Grand Rapids
|
The Creston Brewery, a staple in the Grand Rapids Creston neighborhood, has closed.
The Saugatuck Brewing Company, which bought the brewery at 1504 Plainfield Ave. near Quimby Street in 2021, announced it had closed on March 3. The company’s taproom in Kalamazoo is also closing, it said, while its Douglas taproom is set to remain open.
It cited a “challenging time for the craft beer industry” for the closure of the brewery that first opened in 2016.
“We’ve always believed in brewing great beer, and in today’s evolving industry, we’re making the difficult choice to shift our focus toward growing our presence through distribution,” John Miller, CEO of Saugatuck Brewing Company, said in a Monday release. “This decision was not made lightly, as our Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo taprooms have been an integral part of our story.”
He added that the Saugatuck Brewing Company is “incredibly grateful to have been a part of both of these communities.”
“The memories made, the friendships formed, and the unwavering support from our patrons have been invaluable,” he said.
Miller, who was named the new CEO of the Saugatuck Brewing Company in 2023, also said that he’s grateful for the two taprooms’ employees.

Australia: Government to temporarily halt tax hikes on draught beer
|
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on March 1 that his government would temporarily halt tax hikes on draught beer, amid sagging popularity for the governing Labor Party ahead of a general election due by May, Reuters reported.
Australia is one of the world's wealthiest countries per capita and one of its highest-spending on alcohol per capita. Its centre-left government, lagging the main conservative political opposition in recent polling, levies inflation-indexed tax hikes on alcohol producers twice a year.
"The Albanese Labor Government will freeze the indexation on draught beer excise for two years, in a win for beer drinkers, brewers and hospitality businesses," Albanese said in a statement.
The measure, to start in August, would take pressure off beer prices at the nation's pubs and clubs as well as support local businesses and regional tourism, he said.
Speaking to media at a brewery in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, Australia's most populous state, Albanese said that attending pubs was "part of who we are as Australians".
"This is something that has been requested for a long time," he said, referring to the tax relief, in remarks televised by the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

World: Deutsche Bank lifts Diageo stock rating to hold, maintains target

On Monday, March 3, Deutsche Bank analyst Mitch Collett revised the rating on Diageo PLC, changing it from "Sell" to "Hold," while maintaining the price target at GBp20.20. According to InvestingPro data, Diageo currently trades at $108.82, with analysts' targets ranging from $100 to $144, suggesting potential upside. The stock appears undervalued based on InvestingPro's comprehensive Fair Value analysis. Collett's reassessment comes after observing the stock's significant underperformance relative to several indices since the previous downgrade on June 29, 2022. South Africa: Diageo SA pushes back against excise tax hikes

Premium alcohol producer Diageo South Africa has urged the government to focus on strengthening enforcement against illegal trade rather than raising taxes, Moneyweb reported on March 3.
Diago SA owns brands including Johnnie Walker, Tanqueray and a stake in Moët Hennessy.
Euromonitor estimates that the government loses R11.3 billion in tax revenue annually due to illicit trade.
Diageo noted that last year’s above-inflation excise tax increase of 6.7% failed to deliver the expected revenue growth. Instead, the South African Revenue Service collected only 3.4% more in spirits tax revenue as legal sales volumes declined.
“Rather than increasing taxes, the focus should be on strengthening Sars’s capacity to combat tax evasion and recover the more than R11 billion lost annually to illegal alcohol trade,” says Sibani Mngadi, corporate relations director at Diageo SA.
“This approach would not only protect the legal alcohol industry but also boost government revenue without burdening consumers or encouraging illicit activity.”
In its proposed but not yet tabled 2025 Budget, the Treasury aimed to increase tax for all alcoholic categories by 6.83%.

France: Spring barley sowing advances quickly during a drier spell in France
|
The condition of France’s main wheat crop declined slightly last week to remain near the rain-hit score a year ago, while spring barley sowing advanced quickly during a drier spell, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on February 28, Business Recorder reported.
Some 73% of soft wheat was rated as in good or excellent condition by February 24, down from 74% a week earlier, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal crop report. The rating was the second-lowest in the past five years after the 68% score a year ago when torrential rain put France on course for its smallest wheat harvest since the 1980s. Soft wheat conditions deteriorated between December and February, with a wet January keeping some fields waterlogged after last year’s repeated rain.
There have been drier spells this month, including last week, but farmers and analysts worry that some wheat and winter barley crops have already suffered serious damage.
The good-to-excellent rating for winter barley was unchanged on the week at 69%, slightly below a year-earlier score of 70% and the lowest since 2020, FranceAgriMer’s data showed. UK: Molson Coors launches new 0% ABV version of its Yorkshire-brewed Madrí lager

Molson Coors is tapping into the growing alcohol-free beer market with the launch of a new 0% ABV version of its Yorkshire-brewed Madrí lager, The Drinks Business reported on March 4.
First launched in 2020, Madrí has become something of a phenomenon in the UK, especially from 2022 onwards when its social media presence suddenly began to snowball.
Marketed as ‘El Alma de Madrid’, or ‘The Soul of Madrid’, Madrí is not brewed in the Spanish capital, or in Spain at all, but rather at Molson Coors’ Tower Brewery in Tadcaster, Yorkshire – other brands brewed there include Carling, Coors, Pravha and Staropramen. However, the Madrí recipe was created in collaboration with La Sagra Brewery, which is based near Madrid.
Now the Madrí brand has extended to an alcohol-free expression to complement the regular 4.6% ABV version.
“Consumers increasingly expect to see a no- and low-alcohol version of their favourite beers,” commented Sophie Mitchell, marketing controller at Madrí. “With Madrí Excepcional fast becoming the flagship brand of the world beer category, launching 0.0% is a natural evolution for us.”

UK: Heineken brings Guinness rival Murphy’s back to UK supermarkets
|
Heineken has brought its own stout, a rival to Guinness, back to supermarkets, after three years off the shelves, The Sun reported on March 2.
The decision to revive Murphy's comes amid unprecedented demand for the drink, with stout giant Guinness even facing shortages late last year.
Four-packs and ten-packs of Heineken's 4 per cent tipple will now be available across various shops from next month, the company has confirmed.
These will be priced at around £5 and £10 respectively - with cans measuring in at 440ml each.
Murphy's has not been stocked in supermarkets since 2022, when it was in Tesco.
It was previously axed from Asda in 2021 and Sainsbury's in 2019.
However, Heineken has seen huge growth in its stout category, with a 176 per cent increase in sales last year - as bosses said Murphy's had "performed incredibly well".
