Whisky news USA, KY: Diageo pauses production at whiskey distillery in Kentucky to support productivity goals
Bulleit owner Diageo has temporarily paused production at its carbon-neutral whiskey distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky to support the firm’s productivity goals, The Spirits Business reported on March 6.

The Diageo Lebanon Distillery is a 72,000-square-foot facility that uses 100% renewable electricity. The site produces up to 10 million proof gallons per year without using fossil fuels and is one of the largest of its kind in North America.

The distillery was established in partnership with Inter-County and East Kentucky Power Cooperative, and upon completion of the build, it created 30 full-time jobs.

Now, a Diageo spokesperson has confirmed the company has paused production and barrel filling at the site until the summer.

“Every year we run standard temporary slowdowns or shutdowns across our operations to support our efficiency and productivity goals. Since we are ahead of schedule with the volume we produce at the site, this year we decided to temporarily pause our distilling operations and barrel-filling activity through June 2025.

“During this time, some of our employees will support work at our Shelbyville facility while the remaining group of employees will work on strategic projects, conduct trainings to continue building capabilities and maintenance processes to position our sites for a successful start of our ...More info on site

Whisky news Ireland: Irish Distillers to pause whiskey production in Midleton from April until summer time
Irish Distillers Ltd has confirmed that it will pause whiskey production at its Midleton Distillery from early April 2025 until summer time to “support the sustainable global growth of its portfolio of Irish whiskeys”, Agriland reported on March 6.

The distillery usually pauses production for one month in the year for maintenance, however it stated that the extended period has been allowed for to conduct a “routine, periodic review”.

In a statement, Irish Distillers said: “This review demonstrates our ability to be agile with our production cycles and has been enabled through improved operational efficiency and state-of-the-art production facilities.”

It added that the company remains “fully committed” to the production of Irish whiskey and that the change has been communicated to suppliers, customers and contractors “to enable forward business planning”.

The adjustment from Irish Distillers comes at a difficult time for tillage farmers, with farmers in the midst of growing malting barley for the season and recent cuts to malting barley contracts at Boortmalt.

Bobby Miller of the Irish Grain Growers Group (IGGG) told Agriland that farmers are “hearing this news while they are at work in the field” and that the timing is “poor”.

“We can’t afford lower prices for malting barley. We’re seeing nervousness ...More info on site
