USA: January beer removals down 8.7% compared to the same month last year
|
The vast majority of beer enjoyed by American drinkers is brewed, packaged, and shipped within the United States — a testament to the strength of domestic production. To track this critical segment of the industry, the Beer Institute collaborates with brewers, trade groups, and government agencies to estimate the total volume of regular beer (over 0.5% ABV) produced and sold nationwide. This data always offers a comprehensive look at beer’s footprint in the U.S. economy, revealing key trends in consumption, production, and market shifts that could shape the future of the industry, Craft Brewing Business reported on March 12.
Recently the Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of taxable removals shipments by beer brewers for January 2025.
The January 2025 estimate of 10,550,000 barrels, for a decrease of 8.7% compared to January 2024 removals of 11,551,511.
The February 2025 taxable removals estimate is scheduled to be released on April 3.

Australia: Malting barley exports triple in January as compared to December
|
Australia exported 1,094,612 tonnes of barley and 9932t of sorghum in January, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on March 12.
The feed barley component of 505,548t was up slightly from the 496,335t shipped in December, while malting exports at 589,064t were more than triple the 179,282t shipped in December.
On sorghum, shipments have dwindled to a four-figure sum, down from 44,621t exported in December to mark the rundown on current-crop stocks in the closing quarter of the shipping year.
On feed barley, China on 293,882t was the major market by far, followed by Thailand on 100,606t, and Saudi Arabia on 64,930t.
China on 411,117t was also the biggest market for malting barley, followed by Mexico on 96,000t, followed by Vietnam on 35,335t, with South Africa not far behind on 30,000t.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said December barley exports rose around 60pc from December, with excellent demand from a broad range of buyers meeting with aggressive selling from growers, especially in Western Australia, which has been powering the early program.
“The jump in export volumes is expected, as we can see it on shipping stems and have seen strong demand for a long time now,

India: The rise of Indian single malt unshaken by Trump tariffs and whisky wars
|
The 'josh' or spirit is high for liquor companies in India, eyeing billion-dollar opportunities in the world’s second-most populous nation where consumption slowdown is troubling the economy. As alcohol sales surge amid a premiumisation boom in an economy aiming to become the world’s third-largest by 2030 and also home to some of Asia’s wealthiest individuals, another distinctly Indian success story is making waves - the rise of Indian single malt, The Economic Times reported on March 7.
Gone are the days when Scotch, Irish or Japanese whiskies only dominated Indian shelves. Homegrown single malts have become a force to reckon with, commanding prices even in lakhs and carving out a loyal consumer base, even as a large section of the Indian population enjoy freebies to ease some burden on their household expenditure.
While Indian single malt enjoys its moment in the spotlight, the industry however stares at the threat of import tax cuts on foreign whiskies and concerns over unregulated dumping. In a bid to negotiate a major trade deal with the US, India recently slashed import duties on bourbon to 50%, a pre-emptive move to reciprocal tariff pressures from US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies

EU & USA: EU's tariffs will be 'devastating' for spirits sector, industry says
|
Europe's spirits and cosmetics industries hit back at the European Commission's plan to slap tariffs on U.S.-made goods on March 12, saying it put the continent's far larger trade with the United States in those sectors at risk, Reuters reported.
The European Commission said it would impose tariffs on 26 billion euros ($28.31 billion) worth of U.S. goods from next month, ramping up a global trade war in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium.
The move will include the re-imposition of suspended tariffs on goods like bourbon whiskey, as well as new levies on a host of other products, with other spirits, makeup and essential oils on the list of possible targets.
Industry association spiritsEurope and French cosmetics association FEBEA said Brussels was putting European-produced goods in those sectors, which have large trade surpluses with the United States, in the firing line for retaliatory tariffs.
"There's an enormous risk that we'll find ourselves with retaliatory measures that we didn't ask for," said FEBEA Secretary General Emmanuel Guichard, who added that he has been urging Brussels for weeks to stop the tariffs from going ahead.
FEBEA, members of which include L'Oreal and Estee Lauder, said France imports around 500 million euros a year of
