Brewery news USA: January beer removals down 8.7% compared to the same month last year
The vast majority of beer enjoyed by American drinkers is brewed, packaged, and shipped within the United States — a testament to the strength of domestic production. To track this critical segment of the industry, the Beer Institute collaborates with brewers, trade groups, and government agencies to estimate the total volume of regular beer (over 0.5% ABV) produced and sold nationwide. This data always offers a comprehensive look at beer’s footprint in the U.S. economy, revealing key trends in consumption, production, and market shifts that could shape the future of the industry, Craft Brewing Business reported on March 12.

Recently the Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of taxable removals shipments by beer brewers for January 2025.

The January 2025 estimate of 10,550,000 barrels, for a decrease of 8.7% compared to January 2024 removals of 11,551,511.

The February 2025 taxable removals estimate is scheduled to be released on April 3.

Whisky news EU & USA: EU's tariffs will be 'devastating' for spirits sector, industry says
Europe's spirits and cosmetics industries hit back at the European Commission's plan to slap tariffs on U.S.-made goods on March 12, saying it put the continent's far larger trade with the United States in those sectors at risk, Reuters reported.

The European Commission said it would impose tariffs on 26 billion euros ($28.31 billion) worth of U.S. goods from next month, ramping up a global trade war in response to U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium.

The move will include the re-imposition of suspended tariffs on goods like bourbon whiskey, as well as new levies on a host of other products, with other spirits, makeup and essential oils on the list of possible targets.

Industry association spiritsEurope and French cosmetics association FEBEA said Brussels was putting European-produced goods in those sectors, which have large trade surpluses with the United States, in the firing line for retaliatory tariffs.

"There's an enormous risk that we'll find ourselves with retaliatory measures that we didn't ask for," said FEBEA Secretary General Emmanuel Guichard, who added that he has been urging Brussels for weeks to stop the tariffs from going ahead.

FEBEA, members of which include L'Oreal and Estee Lauder, said France imports around 500 million euros a year of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SD: WoodGrain Brewing Co. expanding with a second location
WoodGrain Brewing Co. is expanding east, SiouxFalls Business reported on March 10.

The Sioux Falls brewery and taproom will add a second location in the building that used to be Obscure Brewing Co. at 5200 E. Grant St., a block north of Arrowhead Parkway along Foss Avenue.

Obscure closed at the end of 2024.

For WoodGrain owner Steve Hartman, it became the chance to complete an expansion his brewery first thought about in 2019, then put on hold during the pandemic.

“I grew up on the east side and still live over there, and there’s nothing for breweries,” he said. “South and west are covered, but east is empty.”

WoodGrain plans to continue its downtown location, which opened in September 2015, while taking advantage of the increased capacity the east-side space will allow.

“We’re going to put our own spin on it,” Hartman said. “We took out all the back bar cabinetry. We’re going to repaint and put up some different decor, and we’ve got new chairs, and I’m going to build an all-new back bar, and there will be TVs, so when people want to watch the game, they can come in.”

The brewery itself will allow WoodGrain to expand production.

“We’re one of the only breweries ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Old Ox Brewery in Ashburn announces it’s time for its last call
A big blow to the local brewery scene as Ashburn’s iconic Old Ox Brewery says it’s time for its “last call” and announces its planning to close.

The word came today via a message posted on the Old Ox website.

“The time has come to say goodbye to Old Ox Brewery,” the post reads. “It has been an incredible journey these past 11 years. We’ve treasured every moment. Well, with a few rare exceptions.”

“Together, we’ve made wonderful friendships, supported our community, created some pretty darned cool experiences, and consumed an impressive quantity of delicious beer. Everything must end, though and this is our time.”

The owners say they have been looking for a buyer for the brewery, and are still open to some type of solution to keep the brand going.

But in the meanwhile, a new tenant has leased their Ashburn space on Guilford Drive near Loudoun County Parkway — and Old Ox’s last day will be Saturday, April 5.

Brewery news USA, TX: Cottonwood Creek Brewery & Smokehouse preparing for grand opening in April
Just off Hwy. 79 in Hutto, something exciting is brewing. Cottonwood Creek Brewery & Smokehouse is preparing for its grand opening this April, promising a brewery experience unlike any other, Storytelling reported on March 8.

“We’re not just about beer,” sales representative Zachary Delmonico said. “We’ve got a full cocktail menu, wine, mocktails and a craft kitchen that serves up great food. Sure, we specialize in smoked meats, but we’re bringing our own style to the table—literally.”

Cottonwood Creek’s journey began in February 2020 with the opening of its taproom. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the brewery quickly had to adapt.

“For us to keep going, we had to serve 51% food and 49% alcohol,” Delmonico said. “People loved our food. It took off.”

That shift led to the Cottonwood Creek concept seen today—a diverse menu that extends beyond smoked meats to include fresh salads, fried dishes and their unique twist on comfort food. However, the standout feature remains the homemade Reuben sandwich.

“That’s the one,” Delmonico said. “Our go-to.”

Cottonwood Creek offers more than just great beer and food—it’s designed for a welcoming, relaxed experience. With a play area for kids, plenty of TVs and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s a place where guests can ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AZ: Iron John’s Brewing closes Tucson location, plans to relocate elsewhere
Over the weekend, Iron John’s Brewing permanently closed at 5350 E. Broadway Blvd. #128 — its final day was Saturday, March 8, Tucson Foodie reported.

However, as the team mentioned on social media, this isn’t a full-on goodbye. They have plans for a new location elsewhere.

“It’s just the start of something new. We’re actively exploring a new downtown location and can’t wait to share what’s next! We’re extremely grateful for all the love and support from our amazing community — thank you for being part of our journey!”

The Iron John’s team opened this particular location in October 2023. Plans to open the taproom began in early 2020 when Iron John’s Brewing Company merged with the local burger joint, Monkey Burger. In addition to the menu’s burger arsenal, their wood-fired pizzas quickly became a hit at the Broadway location.

Brewery news USA, MI: Loaded Dice Brewery serves its final beer in Troy
Loaded Dice Brewery served its final beer last week, FOX 2 Detroit reported on March 10.

The Troy brewery shared Friday afternoon (March 7) that the business was closing immediately.

In addition to the closure of Loaded Dice, the closure of Rebuy Brewing Co. - formerly Brooks Brewing in Shelby Township - was also announced. The owners of Loaded Dice took over Brooks and rebranded the brewery several months ago.

"We gave it everything we had, holding on as long as we could, but the current market conditions have made it impossible to continue," the owners wrote in posts made on both Loaded Dice's and Rebuy's social media pages.

The posts ended with a message: "This isn't goodbye — just see ya later."

Loaded Dice had also been planning a second LD location in Clawson, but issues with the building last year had delayed that project, and it never opened.

These are just the latest in a string of recent brewery closures across the state. Last month, Blue Skies Brewery closed. The business did not cite a reason for shuttering, but directed patrons to its other unaffected locations in Jackson and the Irish Hills area.

Whisky news India: The rise of Indian single malt unshaken by Trump tariffs and whisky wars
The 'josh' or spirit is high for liquor companies in India, eyeing billion-dollar opportunities in the world’s second-most populous nation where consumption slowdown is troubling the economy. As alcohol sales surge amid a premiumisation boom in an economy aiming to become the world’s third-largest by 2030 and also home to some of Asia’s wealthiest individuals, another distinctly Indian success story is making waves - the rise of Indian single malt, The Economic Times reported on March 7.

Gone are the days when Scotch, Irish or Japanese whiskies only dominated Indian shelves. Homegrown single malts have become a force to reckon with, commanding prices even in lakhs and carving out a loyal consumer base, even as a large section of the Indian population enjoy freebies to ease some burden on their household expenditure.

While Indian single malt enjoys its moment in the spotlight, the industry however stares at the threat of import tax cuts on foreign whiskies and concerns over unregulated dumping. In a bid to negotiate a major trade deal with the US, India recently slashed import duties on bourbon to 50%, a pre-emptive move to reciprocal tariff pressures from US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Malting barley exports triple in January as compared to December
Australia exported 1,094,612 tonnes of barley and 9932t of sorghum in January, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on March 12.

The feed barley component of 505,548t was up slightly from the 496,335t shipped in December, while malting exports at 589,064t were more than triple the 179,282t shipped in December.

On sorghum, shipments have dwindled to a four-figure sum, down from 44,621t exported in December to mark the rundown on current-crop stocks in the closing quarter of the shipping year.

On feed barley, China on 293,882t was the major market by far, followed by Thailand on 100,606t, and Saudi Arabia on 64,930t.

China on 411,117t was also the biggest market for malting barley, followed by Mexico on 96,000t, followed by Vietnam on 35,335t, with South Africa not far behind on 30,000t.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said December barley exports rose around 60pc from December, with excellent demand from a broad range of buyers meeting with aggressive selling from growers, especially in Western Australia, which has been powering the early program.

“The jump in export volumes is expected, as we can see it on shipping stems and have seen strong demand for a long time now, ...More info on site
