Mexico: Grupo Modelo’s beers secure three spots among Mexico’s most valuable brands
|
Grupo Modelo secured three spots among Mexico’s most valuable brands in Kantar BrandZ 2025 ranking. For the second consecutive year, Corona was recognized as the country’s most valuable brand, followed by Cerveza Modelo in third place and Cerveza Victoria in sixth, Mexico Business News reported.
Kantar BrandZ evaluates brands based on innovation and consumer relationships. This year, Corona, valued at over US$18.7 billion, stood out for its presence in entertainment, music, and sports, as well as for the launch of Corona Golden Light and the participation of Corona Cero as the first Mexican brand to sponsor the Paris 2024 Olympics. Cerveza Modelo, valued at US$11.5 billion, has positioned itself as a premium option associated with special occasions, while Cerveza Victoria, worth US$3.7 billion, maintains a strong connection to Mexican traditions and cultural identity.
Daniel Cocenzo, President, Grupo Modelo, emphasized the significance of this recognition. “Being part of Kantar BrandZ 2025 in such a special year fills us with pride and motivates us to keep contributing to the country’s growth. This achievement would not be possible without the trust of Mexicans who have supported us for 100 years,” he said.
Grupo Modelo remains a pillar of Mexico’s economy, employing

UK: AB InBev reveals plans to pilot a refillable glass bottle
|
Brewing giant AB InBev announced on March 12 plans to pilot a refillable glass bottle programme, Drinks Retailing News reported.
Speaking at a sustainability event at the company’s Magor brewery in South Wales, Brian Perkins, Western Europe president at AB InBev, stated that the initiative is partly driven by the upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme and the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), both of which have implications for glass bottles.
Perkins emphasised that the project is still in its early stages, with a pilot likely to take place in Newport, near the Magor brewery. While there is no fixed timeline, the pilot could begin as soon as this year, but full implementation may take several years.
He said: “We’re working actively with the Welsh government and other producers across different beverage products to reimagine a future where bottles are returnable in the UK, and refillable.
“We always try and do things that would be both good for business and the right thing to do. And it’s very exciting because this investment would create jobs, too.”
Of the potential programme, Perkins said: “It’s frankly in response to the crushing weight of packaging taxes (in the UK) which are some of the highest

South Korea: OB Beer becomes Korea’s first liquor company to manufacture beer with solar power
|
OB Beer has become the first liquor company in Korea to manufacture beer with renewable energy produced by solar power, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on March 17.
OB Beer announced on the 17th that it will expand the use of renewable energy after completing the construction of solar power facilities at three production plants in Icheon, Cheongju, and Gwangju.
OB Beer is taking the lead in eco-friendly management and is actively participating in the 'RE100' initiative, which covers 100% of the electricity used by companies only with renewable energy to respond to climate change.
To this end, in 2023, OB Beer first installed a 3.7 megawatt (MW) solar panel at its Gwangju plant. The solar panels of the newly installed Icheon plant and the Cheongju plant completed in December last year totaled 1.8 megawatts (MW).
The Icheon plant can generate 1.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy per year, replacing about 3.7% of the electricity the Icheon plant consumes annually.
The Cheongju plant can generate 0.6 gigawatts (GWh) of renewable energy per year. This is the amount that can replace about 2.6% of the annual power consumption of the Cheongju plant.
The Gwangju plant generates 3.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy per year, replacing about 11% of

USA: Barley farmers fear tariffs amid overall beer consumption decline
|
Overdue loans and mounting interest payments often weigh on Montana barley grower Mitch Konen as he bales hay and loads trailers at his remote farm overlooking the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, Reuters reported on March 18.
As spring sunshine warms the fields, Konen, 65, and other barley farmers worry tariffs will take away crucial export markets and increase the cost to grow the grains, even as sinking U.S. beer consumption has slashed demand for barley.
"Down here on the farm we’re already stretched pretty thin financially," said Konen, who is also vice president of the National Barley Growers Association. "It makes us wonder whether or not we can even stay in business."
Roughly half of Konen's barley is destined for Mexico, where it will be turned into beer. Some will be shipped back to the U.S. in bottles of Modelo, Corona and Pacifico.
Mexico is the third largest importer of U.S. barley and the biggest importer of U.S. malt, made from germinating kernels of barley and a key ingredient in beer. If Mexico issues tariffs in retaliation or switches to buying barley from other trading partners, experts say it could deal another economic blow to American farmers as U.S. consumers increasingly ditch beer.

USA: Diageo suggests alternative to tariffs
|
Smirnoff owner Diageo has suggested the US government should consider tougher rules of origin requirements in trade agreements as an alternative to tariffs, The Spirits Business reported on March 17.
In a letter sent to the US trade representative (USTR) on 11 March, the drinks giant argues that new rules of origin would ‘disincentivise the use of non-originating content and support the Trump Administration’s policy objectives’.
The letter was written by Diageo North America’s vice-president of government relations, Alden Schacher, and sent in response to a request for comments to assist in reviewing and identifying unfair trade practices and initiating all necessary actions to investigate harm from non-reciprocal trade arrangements. It was ‘one of hundreds’ published by the USTR from firms and trade associations about tariffs.
The letter begins by highlighting that “by definition, many of [Diageo’s] products must be produced in certain parts of the world, such as Bourbon (US), Tequila (Mexico), Canadian whisky, Scotch whisky, and Irish liqueur. Because of this regional production, consumers have come to know and recognise their preferences for alcoholic beverages based on where those beverages are produced.”
Schacher goes onto mention in the US, the firm supports more than 178,000 jobs, and operates 11 manufacturing sites, with
