Brewery news Mexico: Grupo Modelo’s beers secure three spots among Mexico’s most valuable brands
Grupo Modelo secured three spots among Mexico’s most valuable brands in Kantar BrandZ 2025 ranking. For the second consecutive year, Corona was recognized as the country’s most valuable brand, followed by Cerveza Modelo in third place and Cerveza Victoria in sixth, Mexico Business News reported.

Kantar BrandZ evaluates brands based on innovation and consumer relationships. This year, Corona, valued at over US$18.7 billion, stood out for its presence in entertainment, music, and sports, as well as for the launch of Corona Golden Light and the participation of Corona Cero as the first Mexican brand to sponsor the Paris 2024 Olympics. Cerveza Modelo, valued at US$11.5 billion, has positioned itself as a premium option associated with special occasions, while Cerveza Victoria, worth US$3.7 billion, maintains a strong connection to Mexican traditions and cultural identity.

Daniel Cocenzo, President, Grupo Modelo, emphasized the significance of this recognition. “Being part of Kantar BrandZ 2025 in such a special year fills us with pride and motivates us to keep contributing to the country’s growth. This achievement would not be possible without the trust of Mexicans who have supported us for 100 years,” he said.

Grupo Modelo remains a pillar of Mexico’s economy, employing ...More info on site

Barley news USA: Barley farmers fear tariffs amid overall beer consumption decline
Overdue loans and mounting interest payments often weigh on Montana barley grower Mitch Konen as he bales hay and loads trailers at his remote farm overlooking the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, Reuters reported on March 18.

As spring sunshine warms the fields, Konen, 65, and other barley farmers worry tariffs will take away crucial export markets and increase the cost to grow the grains, even as sinking U.S. beer consumption has slashed demand for barley.

"Down here on the farm we’re already stretched pretty thin financially," said Konen, who is also vice president of the National Barley Growers Association. "It makes us wonder whether or not we can even stay in business."

Roughly half of Konen's barley is destined for Mexico, where it will be turned into beer. Some will be shipped back to the U.S. in bottles of Modelo, Corona and Pacifico.

Mexico is the third largest importer of U.S. barley and the biggest importer of U.S. malt, made from germinating kernels of barley and a key ingredient in beer. If Mexico issues tariffs in retaliation or switches to buying barley from other trading partners, experts say it could deal another economic blow to American farmers as U.S. consumers increasingly ditch beer.

Whisky news USA: Diageo suggests alternative to tariffs
Smirnoff owner Diageo has suggested the US government should consider tougher rules of origin requirements in trade agreements as an alternative to tariffs, The Spirits Business reported on March 17.

In a letter sent to the US trade representative (USTR) on 11 March, the drinks giant argues that new rules of origin would ‘disincentivise the use of non-originating content and support the Trump Administration’s policy objectives’.

The letter was written by Diageo North America’s vice-president of government relations, Alden Schacher, and sent in response to a request for comments to assist in reviewing and identifying unfair trade practices and initiating all necessary actions to investigate harm from non-reciprocal trade arrangements. It was ‘one of hundreds’ published by the USTR from firms and trade associations about tariffs.

The letter begins by highlighting that “by definition, many of [Diageo’s] products must be produced in certain parts of the world, such as Bourbon (US), Tequila (Mexico), Canadian whisky, Scotch whisky, and Irish liqueur. Because of this regional production, consumers have come to know and recognise their preferences for alcoholic beverages based on where those beverages are produced.”

Schacher goes onto mention in the US, the firm supports more than 178,000 jobs, and operates 11 manufacturing sites, with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, LA: Abita Brewing Company opens its second location in New Orleans
Louisiana’s oldest and largest craft brewery has opened its second location in New Orleans along a riverfront strip that has emerged as the city’s unofficial “brewery row”, NOLA.com reported on March 17.

Abita Brewing Company opened its New Orleans brewery and taproom Friday, March 14 at 2375 Tchoupitoulas St. in the former home of Urban Roots Garden Center.

The 39-year-old brewery’s new location features 35 taps, a seven-barrel on-site brewing operation and a spacious outdoor area that attracted families on its opening weekend. Projectors are set up to turn the building’s walls into large TV screens for game days and other special events.

Abita representatives say the brewery will use the Tchoupitoulas location for smaller-scale beer production, in addition to offering its existing line of beers like Abita Amber, Andygator, The Boot and Jockamo Juicy IPA.

Current limited edition offerings include DeltaGator, Bourbon Barrel Aged Pecan, Maison Blanche, Vanilla Triple Dog Dare, Turbo Booster, Fruity Pebbles, Blueberry and a house beer.

Heidi Guerra, Abita’s vice president of marketing, said the soft opening of the new location has been a big success so far.

“Adding this second location in New Orleans just makes sense,” Guerra said. “This location gives us the opportunity and freedom to experiment and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Logan Brewing takes over Airways Brewing taproom and brewery in Kent
It’s been a poorly kept secret, but Logan Brewing didn’t want to make any assumptions or official announcements until the paperwork was settled. On March 16, the Burien-based brewery announced its plans to take over the Airways Brewing taproom and brewery in Kent, The Washington Beer Blog reported.

Airways Brewing closed the first of its two locations, the Bistro in downtown Kent, in October last year. A month later, it announced it was going out of business entirely and closing the brewery and taproom on 212th Street. It left a hole in the community. Airways Brewing’s owners hoped another brewery would move in and fill the void. That’s what just happened.

Chris Polumbo is one of the owners at Logan Brewing. He says that the paint is drying and they’re waiting on permits, but he hopes to open it to the public in May or June. He is noticeably excited about this development. The brewery has been looking for a way to increase production for some time, a problem that this development solves. Moving forward, Logan Brewing will produce much more beer, using the relatively new, state-of-the-art brewing equipment that Airways left behind.

“Logan Brewing is growing,” Chris said in the announcement. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Park Bench Brewing Co. makes its debut in Augusta
After an unavoidable delay in opening, Park Bench Brewing Co. made its debut in Augusta’s downtown Red Brick District last weekend. After a successful grand opening, Owners Adam and Julie Kraft rang in their second weekend open with the Red Brick Pub Crawl. The duo say they couldn’t be more thankful for the supportive community, Butler County Times-Gazette reported on March 17.

The Kraft’s, while not native Augustans, found a home very quickly in Augusta on their journey of finding the perfect spot for a brewery. Adam is originally from Greensburg, Kan., before moving to Wichita to work for the Wichita Police Department for just under 10 years. He then moved to Clearwater, Florida where he continued his policing career and learned how to homebrew beer, growing his love for the craft beer industry over the last seven years.

As Adam was passing through the town one day, Julie suggested he “check it out” to see if he likes it. He recalls it feeling just like home as he walked downtown, remembering how inviting people were even though they were strangers.

“I walked the brick street down here and just thought, yes, this is it,” said Adam.

He said the welcoming atmosphere and hometown ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Evergreen State Brewing now open in Tacoma and Gig Harbor
The brewery formerly known as Gig Harbor Brewing has new owners, a new name, and fresh ideas, Washington Beer Blog reported on March 18.

“We are excited about this new venture for Evergreen State Brewing and the opportunities it presents for our team and customers,” said John Fosberg of Gig Harbor Brewing when announcing that he’d found someone to take over the brewery and its two taprooms. “Evergreen brings fresh ideas and perspectives that will only enhance the local brewing scene.”

John Fosberg announced last June that the brewery and its taprooms were for sale. Today we share the news that Evergreen State Brewing has taken over the brewery and the two taprooms (Tacoma and Gig Harbor). Matthew Burnett, the new owner, says, “We are thrilled to have this incredible opportunity to join the NW brewing community, and we look forward to serving the passionate craft beer drinkers throughout the region.”

Burnett is a veteran and a Tacoma native who brings a love of all things local, including beer, to the business. Evergreen State Brewing says it has “a passion for the State of Washington and everything that our state has to offer. Our beers are named after some of the coolest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ND: Bismarck Brewing closes its doors after seven years in business
Bismarck Brewing has closed its doors after seven years, KFYR reported on March 14.

Brewing industry challenges— like rising prices for brewing materials, fewer guests and the trend of younger generations drinking less— made the business unsustainable.

“I just don’t know that we quite found whatever that missing piece was to connect with everybody, because you know, it’s like, I like to think I make pretty good beer. You know, I guess I thought that was enough, but I guess it wasn’t,” said Bismarck Brewing owner Jordan Everaert.

Everaert said it’s very difficult in the brewing industry right now, but he plans to keep the Bismarck Brewing brand. He’s shifting his focus to his sister company, Bismarck Distillery.

The Ale Works restaurant remains open and will sell Bismarck Brewing beer until their supply runs out.

Brewery news USA, PA: Schaylor Brewing Company to close satellite location in Lebanon County
A local brewery taproom and restaurant in Lebanon County has officially closed its doors, ABC27 reported on March 15.

This past weekend, a local brewery called the Schaylor Brewing Company announced that it would be closing its satellite location in Lebanon County, which is located on the third floor of the Lebanon Farmers Market at 33 South 8th Street.

Schaylor Brewing Company first announced on Facebook that they would closing their doors this coming weekend on March 16 for “various reasons.”

“This Saturday will be our last day open,” Schaylor Brewing Company said on Facebook. “Thank you for everyone who has supported us over the last two years! We absolutely love Lebanon and the building we are in, but unfortunately we will be closing our doors at our Lebanon satellite location this Sunday (3/16/25) for various reasons.”

Days later, the brewing company decided to change their initial plans “due to unforeseen circumstances” and instead officially closed down at 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 13.

According to Schaylor Brewing Company’s website, the business also has a location in Berks County located at 2390 Lancaster Pike in Reading, Pa.

Brewery news UK: AB InBev reveals plans to pilot a refillable glass bottle
Brewing giant AB InBev announced on March 12 plans to pilot a refillable glass bottle programme, Drinks Retailing News reported.

Speaking at a sustainability event at the company’s Magor brewery in South Wales, Brian Perkins, Western Europe president at AB InBev, stated that the initiative is partly driven by the upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme and the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), both of which have implications for glass bottles.

Perkins emphasised that the project is still in its early stages, with a pilot likely to take place in Newport, near the Magor brewery. While there is no fixed timeline, the pilot could begin as soon as this year, but full implementation may take several years.

He said: “We’re working actively with the Welsh government and other producers across different beverage products to reimagine a future where bottles are returnable in the UK, and refillable.

“We always try and do things that would be both good for business and the right thing to do. And it’s very exciting because this investment would create jobs, too.”

Of the potential programme, Perkins said: “It’s frankly in response to the crushing weight of packaging taxes (in the UK) which are some of the highest ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: OB Beer becomes Korea’s first liquor company to manufacture beer with solar power
OB Beer has become the first liquor company in Korea to manufacture beer with renewable energy produced by solar power, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on March 17.

OB Beer announced on the 17th that it will expand the use of renewable energy after completing the construction of solar power facilities at three production plants in Icheon, Cheongju, and Gwangju.

OB Beer is taking the lead in eco-friendly management and is actively participating in the 'RE100' initiative, which covers 100% of the electricity used by companies only with renewable energy to respond to climate change.

To this end, in 2023, OB Beer first installed a 3.7 megawatt (MW) solar panel at its Gwangju plant. The solar panels of the newly installed Icheon plant and the Cheongju plant completed in December last year totaled 1.8 megawatts (MW).

The Icheon plant can generate 1.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy per year, replacing about 3.7% of the electricity the Icheon plant consumes annually.

The Cheongju plant can generate 0.6 gigawatts (GWh) of renewable energy per year. This is the amount that can replace about 2.6% of the annual power consumption of the Cheongju plant.

The Gwangju plant generates 3.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy per year, replacing about 11% of ...More info on site
