Nigeria: Heineken acquires remaining 20% in Distell Wines & Spirits Nigeria
|
Heineken has acquired the remaining 20% holding in the Distell Wines & Spirits Nigeria unit through its Nigerian Breweries subsidiary, Global Drinks Intel reported on March 19.
The transaction, for an undisclosed fee, sees Nigerian Breweries buy out Ekulo International and Next International Nigeria, which each held a 10% stake in Distell Nigeria. A statement added that Distell’s operations in the country had moved production from rented premises to Nigerian Breweries’ facilities, allowing it to increase its presence in the wine, spirits and ready-to-drink categories.
“The full acquisition will help to reduce complexities and make decision making faster in NB’s ambition to expand beyond beer,” Nigerian Breweries said in a filing to the Nigerian Exchange yesterday (18 March).
In June last year, Nigerian Breweries, in which Heineken has a majority holding, announced its acquisition of an 80% stake in Distell’s unit along with 100% of Heineken Beverages’ import business in Nigeria.
Two years ago, Heineken was granted approval for the acquisition of Distell, a purchase that was originally announced back in 2021.

Vietnam: Experts and industry leaders urging government to delay special consumption tax implementation until 2028
|
Amid growing concerns over economic challenges, experts and industry leaders are urging Vietnam’s government to delay the implementation of the special consumption tax (SCT) increase on alcoholic beverages until 2028 instead of 2026, VietNamNet reported on March 19.
The proposed postponement aims to ease financial pressure on businesses, sustain economic growth, and maintain revenue generation.
During a seminar on March 18, hosted by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), stakeholders discussed revisions to the Special Consumption Tax Law before it is submitted for approval at the 9th session of the National Assembly.
According to Dr. Can Van Luc, chief economist at BIDV, businesses are already struggling due to global trade and technology conflicts, rising logistics costs, and uneven order recovery. A rapid increase in SCT could reduce consumer demand, investment, and overall industry benefits.
“A sharp and immediate increase in excise taxes on alcoholic beverages could disrupt tax contributions in the long run,” Luc warned. “It would add financial strain on businesses, their employees, and related sectors such as packaging, logistics, tourism, and hospitality.”
Luc suggested postponing the SCT hike until January 1, 2028, to allow businesses sufficient time to adapt.

Germany: Lower Saxony and Bremen breweries stand strong amid crisis
|
Amid rising energy prices and changing consumer habits, breweries in Lower Saxony and Bremen are standing firm against the brewing crisis that has affected many in the industry, The Pinnacle Gazette reported on March 21.
The number of breweries in these regions has seen a slight decline, dropping by four from 88 in 2020 to 84 in 2024, as noted by the German Brewers' Association (DBB). However, this dip is minor when considering the long-term growth from just 40 breweries in 1995.
The brewing landscape in Germany has faced significant challenges. Nationwide, the total number of breweries has decreased by 77 since 2020, with Bavaria, home to 598 breweries, seeing the highest losses at 45 establishments. Nonetheless, Lower Saxony and Bremen still boast higher brewery counts than many other German regions, trailing only Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to the DBB, the declining trend of beer consumption has resulted in a concerning drop in sales. For 2024, German breweries reported a reduction of 1.4% in sales, totaling 8.3 billion litres, marking the lowest sales figures since the reunification of Germany. This downturn in production and consumption has prompted many brewers to rethink their operations.

Thailand: Thailand to ease restrictions on alcohol sales and advertising

Thailand is set to ease restrictions on alcohol sales and advertising, stepping up a push to liberalise a drinks market seen as likely to spur tourism and support smaller breweries, The Straits Times reported on March 20.
Lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives voted on March 19 to pass an amended alcohol control Bill, although the legislation still needs Senate approval.
The changes are set to revoke an infamous 1972 military government order that bans the sale of alcohol at any time before 11am and again between 2pm and 5pm.
The Bill also softens rules on advertising to allow the promotion of alcoholic drinks. The law currently bans the display of names or trademarks of alcoholic drinks, or the use of pictures of such products for promotional purposes, making it difficult for small businesses to gain greater visibility.
The amendments are aimed at relaxing “unreasonable control” to stimulate economic activity, said lawmaker Chanin Rungtanakiat, a deputy head of the House committee in charge of steering the Bill.

DR Congo: Congo conflict shutters Heineken brewery

At his bar in Bukavu - a city in eastern Congo overrun by Rwandan-backed rebels last month - Adolphe Amani dipped into his dwindling stock of beer to serve a table of thirsty customers watching a recent Sunday football match on his television, Reuters reported on March 20.
But with his main supplier - the nearby Heineken-owned Bralima brewery - shuttered, he expects to close his doors within the week.
"We can't hold out any longer," said Amani, as match commentary blared through the nearly empty bar. "We can't pay the rent, electricity, water or our taxes."
Congo's Tutsi-led M23 rebels - supported by Rwandan soldiers and weapons, according to U.N. investigators - have carried out their most successful offensive in over a decade this year, seizing eastern Congo's largest city Goma in January before turning south and taking Bukavu.

UK: Diageo appoints new Great Britain MD
|
Diageo has appointed its Ireland MD, Barry O’Sullivan, to assume the same position for Great Britain, replacing Nuno Teles, Global Drinks Intel reported on March 20.
O’Sullivan, who assumed his current role four years ago, will make way for ex-Pernod Ricard executive Louise Ryan. Teles, meanwhile, will head across the Atlantic to take the lead at Diageo Mexico having spent the last three years at the helm of the GB unit.
Details of the pending movements of Diageo’s current Mexico MD, Leonardo Curado, who joined the group in January last year, were not immediately available.
The newly-announced Great Britain lead, whose move will come into effect at the start of July, joined Diageo Ireland in 2021 after having served as MD for Mars Petcare in Australia & New Zealand, with previous roles for the group in Mexico, the Middle East, Turkey and Africa.
