USA, DE: First State Brewing Company to open its Rehoboth Beach location on March 24
|
About five months after announcing it was coming to town, First State Brewing Company has revealed its Rehoboth Beach location is opening Monday, March 24, Cape Gazette reported.
“We’re incredibly excited to announce the grand opening of our new Rehoboth location will be next Monday, March 24. We will not be accepting reservations. Just show up,” reads the March 17 announcement on the company’s Facebook page.
Founded in 2020 by Paul Hester, the Middletown-based tap house and kitchen announced it was coming to town in late October.
The space in The Shops at Sea Coast Plaza has been home to TGI Fridays, which closed in July 2019, and The Pond, which moved from downtown Rehoboth Beach in early 2021 before closing in September 2023.
The space is about 6,270 square feet in size and has an occupant load inside of 228.
Grand opening week hours for First State Brewing, 19266 Coastal Hwy., are 5 to 11 p.m., Monday and Tuesday; 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday; and 11:30 a.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday.

USA, CO: Littleton Brewing Company already open in Littleton
|
Littleton Brewing Company launched last week as Colorado’s newest brewery, Thirst Colorado reported on March 20.
The brewery opened with a 15-barrel system, a small canning line and even a taxidermied mascot — Action Jack the American porcupine.
Troy and Ray Beer (son and father, respectively, and yes, their real names) own the brewery. They bought the building, a former automotive garage, three years ago and used their construction experience to help build out the facility. In addition to a spacious interior with long tables, there is a front patio with large firepits, and a rooftop patio with a second bar and great mountain views.
The grand opening was on Saturday, March 15, and half of the cooler was already sold out by Tuesday. The food was also sold out, and the owners gave the kitchen staff a day off after four busy 15-hour days in the wood-fired pizza kitchen that also produces burgers and other pub fare.
Assistant brewer Billy Willits refers to the expansive two-story space as a German-style beer hall, not an American brewery taproom.
Willits moved back to the Denver area to work at Littleton Brewing after several years at

Canada, MB: Half Pints Brewing Co. is for sale
|
For sale: a pioneer of Winnipeg’s craft brewing scene.
Over the past 19 years, Half Pints Brewing Co. has witnessed the local market expand from two companies to at least 26. It’s been through a global pandemic, rapid inflation, supply chain breakdowns and, most recently, a trade war, Winnipeg Free Press reported on March 10.
Half Pints founder David Rudge is ready for a break.
“People will put this down to ‘Dave’s gone nuts and had his mid-life crisis,’” Rudge, 50, said with a laugh.
But handing the keys to a new entrepreneur has been an ongoing discussion between Rudge and the Half Pints ownership group, which includes family members.
He started the venture in 2006 — back when national and international beer ruled the market. Just Fort Garry Brewing Co. Ltd. shared the city when Half Pints opened on Keewatin Street, and at the time, the former was owned by a British Columbia firm.
Rudge had spent the past years creating drinks in other provinces. He returned home inspired and with former operations like Agassiz Brewing in mind: “No brewery exists in a vacuum.”
The first site was cramped. Many onlookers questioned whether Half Pints would succeed, Rudge recalled.
However, by the next year, Half Pints was

USA, NC: Sycamore Brewing to open another location in Cotswold
|
An extremely popular Charlotte brewery will soon open another location in Cotswold, WBTV reported on March 25.
Sycamore Brewing, a South End staple since 2014, is expected to open its new building in the summer of 2026.
The brewery will be in the Cotswold Shopping Center, which is located at Randolph and Sharon Amity Road’s intersection in southeast Charlotte.
“We’re thrilled to expand into Cotswold and create a place where people can relax, connect and enjoy what we do best,” said Sarah Brigham, founder of Sycamore Brewing. “With our beer garden, diverse drink menu and community events, this will be a spot for everyone.”
At 7,000 square feet with an 11,000 square-foot beer garden, the Cotswold Sycamore will be slightly smaller than its South End location, which stands at 21,000 square feet.

USA, IN: More Brewing Company files paperwork to start construction in Fort Wayne
|
Paperwork was recently filed to start construction on More Brewing Company in Fort Wayne, which is expected to open next year, WPTA reported on March 20.
The company broke ground near the intersection of Calhoun and Fourth Streets in late 2023 with plans to build a two-story restaurant and brewery with a riverfront patio and terrace.
At the time, the late Mayor Tom Henry described the restaurant and brewery as "a significant addition to the tremendous momentum and investments we’re experiencing along our riverfront."
Initially, sources said the project was expected to be completed in early 2025.
However, according to a city spokesperson, it was delayed with one factor of the delay being conflicting construction schedules for the project and Riverfront Phase 2 work.
The spokesperson said with construction on Riverfront Phase 2 ramping up this spring, the More Brewing project is expected to start work in late spring or early summer.
With the current schedule, it is expected to be the first major private investment completed at the North River site.

Canada, ON: Labatt Brewery in London now making alcohol-free beer
|
The Labatt Brewery in London is making an alcohol-free beer to quench the growing thirst for non-alcoholic drinks, London Free Press reported on March 19.
The Richmond Street plant, located south of downtown, is now producing Busch De-Alc, a lager with a 0.4 per cent alcohol content. The alcohol in the beer – brewed from American hops, fine barley malt, cereal grains and pure water – is removed through a low-temperature process to retain flavor.
“Exclusively made in London in Canada, this launch expands Labatt’s portfolio of non-alcoholic and dealcoholized offerings, while reinforcing its commitment to brewing locally,” Labatt officials said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Sales for non-alcoholic drinks in Canadas grew to $199 million between June 2023 and June 2024, an increase of 24 per cent from the previous year, with non-alcoholic beer accounting for more than three-quarters of those sales, according to NIQ, a global marketing research firm.
Labatt has invested $26.6 million into the London brewery, the company’s oldest brewery in Canada, in the last year, boosting capacity by 597,000 hectoliters annually, Labatt officials said.
The addition of the booze-free beer production at the Richmond Street operation drives innovation, makes the plant an essential part of the company’s brewing

USA, WI: Great Dane Pub & Brewing Co. to close Wausau location
|
A Wausau restaurant and brew pub will close next month after 15 years in business, company officials announced on March 20.
Great Dane Pub & Brewing Co., 2305 Sherman St., opened in December 2000, serving up craft beers and a range of food choices with a lively outdoor space and large event venue. But rising food costs and changes in consumer dining and drinking habits are forcing its closure, said Eliot Butler, president and co-founder of Great Dane.
The restaurant’s last day will be April 19. Until then, Great Dane will maintain standard hours and will offer their full menu of food and beer. The company’s Madison-area pubs will continue to operate as normal, Butler said.
Great Dane launched in the mid 1990s as a partnership between Butler and Rob LoBreglio, two college friends, who set up shop on the corner of Doty Street in downtown Madison. From there, they built the city’s first brew pub and later expanded to multiple locations – including Wausau.
But now, the city’s chapter will come to a close.
“We’re so thankful to all of our staff and to our management team, vendors, and partners for all the hard work, effort and support they’ve given over the last 15

Nigeria: Heineken acquires remaining 20% in Distell Wines & Spirits Nigeria
|
Heineken has acquired the remaining 20% holding in the Distell Wines & Spirits Nigeria unit through its Nigerian Breweries subsidiary, Global Drinks Intel reported on March 19.
The transaction, for an undisclosed fee, sees Nigerian Breweries buy out Ekulo International and Next International Nigeria, which each held a 10% stake in Distell Nigeria. A statement added that Distell’s operations in the country had moved production from rented premises to Nigerian Breweries’ facilities, allowing it to increase its presence in the wine, spirits and ready-to-drink categories.
“The full acquisition will help to reduce complexities and make decision making faster in NB’s ambition to expand beyond beer,” Nigerian Breweries said in a filing to the Nigerian Exchange yesterday (18 March).
In June last year, Nigerian Breweries, in which Heineken has a majority holding, announced its acquisition of an 80% stake in Distell’s unit along with 100% of Heineken Beverages’ import business in Nigeria.
Two years ago, Heineken was granted approval for the acquisition of Distell, a purchase that was originally announced back in 2021.
Heineken spent around EUR2.4bn [US$2.53bn] on creating Newco, a new, 65%-owned entity to house the group’s existing operations in South Africa along with its export businesses in nine African markets including Kenya,

Vietnam: Experts and industry leaders urging government to delay special consumption tax implementation until 2028
|
Amid growing concerns over economic challenges, experts and industry leaders are urging Vietnam’s government to delay the implementation of the special consumption tax (SCT) increase on alcoholic beverages until 2028 instead of 2026, VietNamNet reported on March 19.
The proposed postponement aims to ease financial pressure on businesses, sustain economic growth, and maintain revenue generation.
During a seminar on March 18, hosted by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), stakeholders discussed revisions to the Special Consumption Tax Law before it is submitted for approval at the 9th session of the National Assembly.
According to Dr. Can Van Luc, chief economist at BIDV, businesses are already struggling due to global trade and technology conflicts, rising logistics costs, and uneven order recovery. A rapid increase in SCT could reduce consumer demand, investment, and overall industry benefits.
“A sharp and immediate increase in excise taxes on alcoholic beverages could disrupt tax contributions in the long run,” Luc warned. “It would add financial strain on businesses, their employees, and related sectors such as packaging, logistics, tourism, and hospitality.”
Luc suggested postponing the SCT hike until January 1, 2028, to allow businesses sufficient time to adapt.

Germany: Lower Saxony and Bremen breweries stand strong amid crisis
|
Amid rising energy prices and changing consumer habits, breweries in Lower Saxony and Bremen are standing firm against the brewing crisis that has affected many in the industry, The Pinnacle Gazette reported on March 21.
The number of breweries in these regions has seen a slight decline, dropping by four from 88 in 2020 to 84 in 2024, as noted by the German Brewers' Association (DBB). However, this dip is minor when considering the long-term growth from just 40 breweries in 1995.
The brewing landscape in Germany has faced significant challenges. Nationwide, the total number of breweries has decreased by 77 since 2020, with Bavaria, home to 598 breweries, seeing the highest losses at 45 establishments. Nonetheless, Lower Saxony and Bremen still boast higher brewery counts than many other German regions, trailing only Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to the DBB, the declining trend of beer consumption has resulted in a concerning drop in sales. For 2024, German breweries reported a reduction of 1.4% in sales, totaling 8.3 billion litres, marking the lowest sales figures since the reunification of Germany. This downturn in production and consumption has prompted many brewers to rethink their operations.
Energy costs are a primary factor in this

Thailand: Thailand to ease restrictions on alcohol sales and advertising
|
Thailand is set to ease restrictions on alcohol sales and advertising, stepping up a push to liberalise a drinks market seen as likely to spur tourism and support smaller breweries, The Straits Times reported on March 20.
Lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives voted on March 19 to pass an amended alcohol control Bill, although the legislation still needs Senate approval.
The changes are set to revoke an infamous 1972 military government order that bans the sale of alcohol at any time before 11am and again between 2pm and 5pm.
The Bill also softens rules on advertising to allow the promotion of alcoholic drinks. The law currently bans the display of names or trademarks of alcoholic drinks, or the use of pictures of such products for promotional purposes, making it difficult for small businesses to gain greater visibility.
The amendments are aimed at relaxing “unreasonable control” to stimulate economic activity, said lawmaker Chanin Rungtanakiat, a deputy head of the House committee in charge of steering the Bill.
The laxer rules come amid a loosening of control over Thailand’s alcohol market, which has long been locked in a duopoly held by Singapore-listed Thai Beverage and Boon Rawd Brewery. Earlier in 2025, lawmakers also passed

DR Congo: Congo conflict shutters Heineken brewery
|
At his bar in Bukavu - a city in eastern Congo overrun by Rwandan-backed rebels last month - Adolphe Amani dipped into his dwindling stock of beer to serve a table of thirsty customers watching a recent Sunday football match on his television, Reuters reported on March 20.
But with his main supplier - the nearby Heineken-owned Bralima brewery - shuttered, he expects to close his doors within the week.
"We can't hold out any longer," said Amani, as match commentary blared through the nearly empty bar. "We can't pay the rent, electricity, water or our taxes."
Congo's Tutsi-led M23 rebels - supported by Rwandan soldiers and weapons, according to U.N. investigators - have carried out their most successful offensive in over a decade this year, seizing eastern Congo's largest city Goma in January before turning south and taking Bukavu.
The push has triggered a flurry of condemnations and sanctions against Rwanda, which denies supporting the rebels, as well as efforts to broker an end to the fighting. But with peace elusive, businesses and residents in M23-held areas are digging in against the economic fallout.
Prices for food and essential goods are sky-rocketing. Farmers displaced by fighting cannot harvest their crops. Banks are shut and

UK: Diageo appoints new Great Britain MD
|
Diageo has appointed its Ireland MD, Barry O’Sullivan, to assume the same position for Great Britain, replacing Nuno Teles, Global Drinks Intel reported on March 20.
O’Sullivan, who assumed his current role four years ago, will make way for ex-Pernod Ricard executive Louise Ryan. Teles, meanwhile, will head across the Atlantic to take the lead at Diageo Mexico having spent the last three years at the helm of the GB unit.
Details of the pending movements of Diageo’s current Mexico MD, Leonardo Curado, who joined the group in January last year, were not immediately available.
The newly-announced Great Britain lead, whose move will come into effect at the start of July, joined Diageo Ireland in 2021 after having served as MD for Mars Petcare in Australia & New Zealand, with previous roles for the group in Mexico, the Middle East, Turkey and Africa.
Ryan is set to leave Pernod Ricard after 13 years, the last two of which have been as MD of the collective Nordic markets. Six years at the group’s Irish Distillers division – during which she spent two years as the unit’s Ireland MD – were followed by just over five years (2018-2023) leading ‘The Gin Hub’, which sat
