USA: AB InBev to invest $300 mln in its manufacturing operations in the US
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev’s American subsidiary said on May 12 it would invest $300 million in its manufacturing operations in the United States this year amid a push for local production under President Donald Trump.
The St. Louis, Missouri-based Anheuser-Busch, which said it invested nearly $2 billion over the last five years in 100 facilities across the country, also announced the launch of a new plant in Columbus, Ohio.
"Anheuser-Busch has been a shining example of what ’Made in America’ means, and their latest investment of $300 million builds on their longtime commitment to grow our workforce and expand U.S. manufacturing," U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said.
AB InBev reported a rise in first-quarter profit last week that was more than double the increase expected by analysts. Its profit margins were also higher despite a fall in sales volumes.
he company had previously said it was boosting investments in key brands such as Budweiser and ramping up efforts to grow at-home consumption, as spending elsewhere - including in bars - remains pressured.
U.S.-listed shares of Anheuser-Busch were down 1.7% in midday trading.

USA, SD: Cohort Craft Brewery acquires Miner Brewing in Hill City
|
Cohort Craft Brewery in Rapid City is expanding. The craft brewery has acquired Miner Brewing Company in Hill City, Rapid City Journal reported on May 13.
Cohort Craft Brewery is known for innovative beers and carbonated meads made with 100% South Dakota honey. Acquiring Miner Brewing Company is Cohort’s first expansion and its second location. Cohort Craft Brewery’s original location on the south side of Rapid City at 4905 5th St. opened in 2021. That location will continue operations as usual, according to a news release from Elevate Rapid City.
Cohort Craft Brewery is a family-owned business that, with a second location, is better able to scale up its production of beer and mead, the owners said.
Cohort’s Hill City location will operate as Cohort-Black Hills. Cohort Craft Brewery owner Jason Kingsbury said Monday he cannot yet confirm an opening date for Cohort-Black Hills, although he said it will open soon.
New Facebook and Instagram accounts for Cohort-Black Hills will be launching, and Kingsbury said the region can expect a grand opening celebration when Cohort-Black Hills makes its debut.
“We like having parties so we will definitely have a shindig,” Kingsbury said.
He said the expansion allows Cohort to reach more customers while preserving the community

USA, AR: Crisis Brewing Co. to expand following Planning Commission's approval
|
Crisis Brewing Co. will be expanding following the Planning Commission's approval on May 12, Arkansas Online reported.
Crisis Brewing, located at 210 Nelson Hackett Blvd., Fayetteville requested approval of a large-scale development of a more than 16,000-square-foot, two-story brewery and restaurant.
A conditional use permit for an additional parking lot on South College Avenue was proposed with the development. The lot would be available for Crisis Brewing customers as well as to the general public.
The property is about 1.3 acres and contains the current brewery, a duplex and a single-family house.
The duplex, built prior to 1908, may be eligible for the Arkansas Register of Historic Places. The developer will work with the city to document the structure before demolition, according to the staff report.
Four members of the public spoke in favor of the development, saying Crisis Brewing has always created a strong sense of community.
No one spoke against the development.
Commissioner Nick Castin spoke in support of Crisis Brewing and the development, but stated he has concerns about removing housing.

USA, NC: Little Heathen’s Brewery coming to Spring Lake this summer
|
A new brewery is in the works and expected to open to the Spring Lake community in summer of 2025, Greater Fayetteville Business Journal reported on May 12.
Little Heathen’s Brewery, the newest addition to the Spring Lake area, is looking to create a space for the community.
The business, owned by retired Army Veteran Adam Terry, is located at 3266 Ray Road inside of the Anderson Creek Shopping Center.
Terry, who began as an at home brewer, was working on this business before leaving the military in 2023.
“I retired from the military in December of 2023 and I wanted to open a brewery. I've wanted to do that since I started home brewing in 2009. My wife said I needed a hobby,” shared Terry. “I started because some buddies were doing it and really enjoyed it.”
Before going into commercial brewing, Terry decided to take advantage of education opportunities offered by the military to learn the tricks of the trade from local brewers.

USA, ME: Allagash Brewing coming to The Downs in Scarborough
|
This summer just got a whole lot better with Allagash coming to The Downs in Scarborough, Maine, 949whom.com reported on May 12.
According to Brewer Magazine, award-winning Allagash Brewing Company announced they will be opening at a new space called Allagash Scarborough, at The Downs in July 2025.
This second location will have different choices for drinks, including house-made wine and cocktails, and of course, their award-winning Allagash beers. Plus, there will be a new menu from Bite Into Maine. And no, that doesn't mean that the Portland Allagash will be closing. The original tasting room area, including brewery tours and tasting experiences, will stay open at the flagship Portland location, which has been ranked by Tripadvisor as the #1 thing to do in Portland, Maine. There are plenty of Allagash lovers for both locations to flourish.
The founder of Allagash Brewing Company told Brewers Magazine:
“For 30 years, Portland has been and will always be our home, but we’re excited to reach even more of the Maine community in this new space, as well as folks visiting Maine, by bringing the Allagash experience to Scarborough.”

USA, VA: Parkway Brewing to open a second location this summer
|
A popular Salem-based brewery is expanding its footprint. Parkway Brewing will open a second location this summer, bringing its signature craft beer experience to downtown Roanoke, WSLS 10 reported on May 12.
The new taproom will be located on the ground floor of The Bower, a mixed-use development between Campbell and Salem Avenue.
This new space will feature a more refined tasting room with 14 taps, offering both flagship and specialty brews. It will also include a full kitchen for on-site dining and a stage for live music performances.
“We’re trying to export what we are here in Salem over there,” said Mike Pensinger, General Manager and Brewmaster.
“We know we have a great product and a great place, and we think that we can do just as well down there, if not better,” Pensinger added.
The expansion is part of a larger development effort in downtown Roanoke. Parkway Brewing hopes to open the new location by late July.

USA, NC: Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery ends its 20-year run in Farmville
|
Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery, a fixture of North Carolina’s craft beer scene since 2004, has ended its 20-year run. The Farmville-based brewery, best known for its Milk Stout and Baltic Porter, cited mounting financial pressures as the reason for its closure, Beer Street Journal reported on May 12.
Founded by Paul Philippon, a former philosophy professor, Duck Rabbit made dark beers its primary focus. At its peak, the brewery was distributed across six states and produced an estimated 3,000 barrels annually. By contrast, the town of Farmville, North Carolina, had a population of 4,546 in 2023.
The closure was driven by rising costs of hops, malt, and packaging, as well as supply chain disruptions and shifting consumer preferences toward seltzers and low-alcohol options.
The brewery’s name, “Duck Rabbit,” was inspired by the rabbit-duck illusion, an ambiguous drawing that can be seen as either a rabbit or a duck. First published in 1892, the image sparks philosophical discussions about perception, reflecting Philippon’s roots as a philosophy professor.
Duck Rabbit’s assets will be sold at auction to pay off outstanding debts. The brewery’s final weekend of operation was April 26–27, 2025, marking the end of its legacy in Farmville.

USA, CT: Thimble Island Brewing Company closing for good in a few weeks
|
A popular brewery in Branford announced that they're closing in a few weeks, NBC Connecticut reported on May 9.
Thimble Island Brewing Company said their last day of service will be Saturday, May 24.
They said they're closing because of challenges they've had to face, like many other small businesses, over the past several years.
"Industry declines coupled with a strategic partnership that didn't go as planned had a significant impact on our business," Thimble Island Brewing said on Facebook.
In the post, the brewery owner said he's also had to navigate some personal health challenges.
"This business has been such a huge part of my life — not just professionally, but personally. It’s been full of long days, proud moments, and most importantly, incredible people like you who supported it, believed in it, and helped it grow. It has been a joy and a privilege to serve this community. Thank you for your support, trust, and encouragement," Justin, the owner, said.
Thimble Island also closed their Old Saybrook location in January.

Australia & India: Australian malting barley makes its debut in the Indian market

Australia’s premium malting barley has made its debut in the Indian market, marking a significant milestone in the agricultural and trade relationship between the two nations, The Australia Today reported on May 11.
This exciting development comes as a result of a collaboration between Joe White Maltings, a leading Australian malting supplier, and The Catalysts Group, a specialist in biotech solutions for the brewing and distilling industries.
The launch event took place at the Tipsy Bull Brewhouse in Bengaluru, Karnataka, where the focus was on the innovative #CollabBrew initiative, which brings together Australian malts and the creative energy of Indian craft brewers.
Australia has long been a major player in the global malting barley market, producing around 12 million metric tonnes (MMT) of barley annually. Between 30% to 40% of this is allocated for malting, with the rest used for animal feed or food production.
The country is responsible for supplying approximately 30% to 40% of the world’s malting barley, prized for its high germination rates, uniform malting characteristics, and excellent extract yields. These traits make Australian barley ideal for beer production and distilling spirits such as malt whiskey and Japanese shochu.

Brazil: Beer prices up 1% in Q1
|
Beer prices in Brazil increased 1 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous three months, according to a Bank of America report.
Among premium brands, Heineken recorded the largest adjustment, with prices up about 5 percent between December and March.
Ambev’s Stella Artois rose 1.7 percent and Corona 1.4 percent. With these changes, Heineken now costs on average 3 percent more than Stella, reversing November’s situation, when it was 3 percent cheaper.
In the mainstream segment, Itaipava led with a 5 percent price rise, a move the report attributes to higher production costs. Brahma prices stayed flat, while Skol showed mixed results: unchanged in bars and restaurants but higher at retail.
In the mid‑range tier, Budweiser posted the sharpest increases, up 8.4 percent in bars and restaurants and 6.6 percent in supermarkets and wholesalers.

Poland: Beer production shifting towards non-alcoholic brands
|
Polish beer production is shifting towards non-alcoholic beers due to declining alcohol consumption trends, the conservative Polish weekly Do Rzeczy reported, citing a report by the Polish Brewery Employers’ Association.
In the report, the advocacy organization writes that “we are witnessing a real revolution in beer consumption in Poland.” Sales of non-alcoholic beers increased dramatically in 2018, increasing by a total of 250 percent by 2024, reaching about two million hectolitres last year, according to the newspaper.
For 52 percent of Poles, non-alcoholic beers are a “good alternative” to alcoholic beverages, the weekly quotes Bartlomiej Mokrzycki, CEO of the Polish Brewery Employers’ Association.
One reason for this phenomenon is the so-called NoLo fashion, i.e. the growing popularity of zero or low-alcohol beverages, the newspaper writes.
The consumer trend that can also be seen in other countries seems to be permanent in Poland, with the total consumption of alcoholic beverages decreasing by 8.7 percent between 2019 and 2023, and the decline in beer in Poland was 9.9 percent.

Ukraine: Barley exports could increase in 2025/26 despite expected drop in production
|
Ukraine can increase barley exports in the marketing year 2025/26, even despite expected drop in production. Forecasts indicate a decrease in the harvest – from 5.1 million tonnes (FAS USDA) to more optimistic 5.5 million tonnes (Ukrainian Grain Association) – due to reduced sowing areas and expectations of lower yields, as reported by agronews.ua.
The expected decrease in supply in the new season is exacerbated by the reduction of carryover stocks. USDA forecasts ending stocks for 2024/25 MY at 591 thousand tonnes, which is lower compared to 689 thousand tonnes a year earlier. FAS USDA is even more pessimistic, estimating stocks at only 279 thousand tonnes.
However, a sharp decrease in domestic consumption – expected to drop to 1.9 million tonnes from 3.4 million tons – may open the door to increasing export potential. FAS USDA forecasts barley exports at 3.2 million tonnes, which is 1 million tonnes more y/y, positioning Ukraine as a more active player in the global barley market.
Global demand may weaken in the 2025/26 MY, and China – the world’s largest barley importer – remains a key wildcard. Currently, purchases from China appear stable, but any changes in grain import restrictions policy could significantly impact demand.

Thailand: Small brewers to be allowed to sell their beer from kegs nationwide
|
Thailand’s cabinet on May 13 agreed that small breweries should be allowed to sell their beer from kegs, nationwide, Bangkok Post reported.
Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said the proposal came from the Excise Department. It would enable small breweries to compete with established, larger commercial breweries.
They have until now been limited to sales at their production sites, or in their respective provinces.
The same proposal enables small and medium-sized liquor plants within 100 metres of public water sources, on the condition they have wastewater treatment systems to protect the environment.
Liquor producers will also be able to set up medium-sized factories right away, without having to run a small plant for at least one year.
The changes need to be officially announced by ministerial regulation to become law.

South Korea: HiteJinro to raise prices of its beer products by 2.7%
|
HiteJinro announced on May 13th that it will increase the average ex-factory price of beer products by 2.7% starting on the 28th due to rising prices of key raw materials. This price increase is the first in 1 year and 6 months since November 2023.
However, to lessen the burden on consumers, the prices of some items, including the 500ml canned beer, which is the most sold in the home channel, and the sparkling drink Philate, have been frozen. The company noted that this decision was made considering the economic situation and the burden on the restaurant industry.
HiteJinro also considered raising the price of soju but ultimately decided not to increase it.
