Canada, AB: Big Rock Brewery announces first quarter results
|
Big Rock Brewery Inc. on May 14 announced its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2025 .
For the three months ended March 31, 2025 , compared to the three months ended March 31, 2024 , the company reported:
• total sales volumes up 51.2% to 68,344 hl compared to 45,204 hl, driven by contract sales volumes that more than doubled and consistent wholesale volumes;
• net revenue increased by 30.5% to C$11.2 million from C$8.6 million because of increased co-packing sales volumes;
• gross margin increased to 33.1% compared to 20.2%;
• operating income increased to C$0.1 million , compared to an operating loss of C$(2.3) million ;
• net loss decreased by C$(3.1) million to C$nil; and
• Adjusted EBITDA increased by C$2.2 million to $0.7 million.
Sales volumes increased by 51.2% compared the first quarter of 2024 and a 9.2% increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. More importantly, our adjusted EBITDA was a positive $0.7 million , which represents a $2.2 million improvement from the first quarter loss of $1.5 million incurred in 2024.

USA, MI: Leigh's Brewing Co. to officially launch on May 15
|
Nearly a year after going before the Holland Township Board of Trustees to get approval for a liquor license, ownership for Leigh's Brewing Co. announced the business will open Thursday, May 15.
The new brewery is located in the former home of Hopland Brewstillery at 977 Butternut Drive. In July 2024, representatives said the business would be a family-run operation that includes Jessica Ringling and her sister Laurel — who both have Leigh as their middle name — along with their father and mother, Mary.
As the business launches, the idea is to focus on quality over quantity. The drink menu will expand and change week by week.
"We're starting with a small but mighty beer list," the business wrote on social media Wednesday, May 14. "And yes, there's more to come. In the meantime, we also have a selection of cocktails and spirits we think you'll love."
Hopland Brewstillery opened about seven years ago, but announced on social media in May 2024 the business had been listed for sale. It officially closed June 15. The space was also once home to Big Lake Brewing, which has since moved to downtown Holland.

USA, OH: Voodoo Brewing announces closure of downtown Cincinnati location
|
Voodoo Brewing announced via a sign on its front doors that it will be closing its downtown Cincinnati location, WCPO.com reported on May 14.
The brewery, which was founded in 2005 in Pennsylvania, has several locations in Ohio. The downtown Cincinnati location, located at 120 E Eighth Street, opened in July 2023.
The Cincinnati location is closing due to "business dynamics downtown" and "slower foot traffic" that "dug a hole (they) couldn't get out of," according to a letter posted on the brewpub's front doors by franchise owner Chris Sands.
"Thank you Cincinnati. As the owner of Voodoo Cincinnati, we really tried to make it work," Sands wrote. "Unfortunately the mojo was not on our side as we came close to rounding out two years of business."
While Sands' letter says the brewpub is permanently closing, the business's Google listing only reads "temporarily closed" currently.
The brewpub had several different rotating beer options, including Cincinnati-centric beers like its Voo-Dey Lite, FC Orange Cream Cider and Home Run Lager. Voodoo also offered a variety of cocktails, THC seltzers and more.
Alongside its drinks, Voodoo also offered an array of food options such as pizzas, appetizers, chili macs, wings, sandwiches and more.

USA, CO: Burns Family Artisan Ales to shut down for good at the end of May

A beloved Denver, Colorado brewery is shutting down its doors at the end of the month, Men’s Journal reported.
On May 13, Burns Family Artisan Ales, which first opened in August 2018 under the guidance of award-winning brewer Wayne Burns, will close its taproom to the public at the end of the month.
"The fire is going out. Burns Family Artisan Ales’ last day selling beer through the taproom to the public will be May 31, 2025," Burns and his wife, co-owner Laura Worley, shared on Facebook.
In its tenure, Burns Family Artisan Ales not only built up a strong customer base, but also won medals at the Great American Beer Festival. For his career, Burns has captured four medals at the competition.
"We developed classic and experimental styles from 2.2%abv to 25.1%abv," said the Burns Family post. "We succeeded with our niche of barrel-aged and high-alcohol beer to an extent that we remain the 4th highest rated brewery in the state of Colorado and consistently rate within the top ten breweries nationwide for our Solar Eclipse series. Japan: Beer and quasi-beer sales down 36% in April
|
Sales of beer and quasi-beer products by four major Japanese brewers in April fell 36 pct from a year earlier in volume, data from Kirin Brewery Co. and others showed.
The decrease followed a last-minute surge in demand in March ahead of price increases in April.
In volume, sales by Suntory Spirits Ltd. dropped 36 pct and those by Sapporo Breweries Ltd. fell 31 pct. In value, sales by Asahi Breweries Ltd. declined 33 pct and those by Kirin were down 31 pct.
The impact of consumers' last-minute purchases in March will last into May, an official at one of the four brewers said.

New Zealand & China: China wants more of New Zealand beer after recent tariff stand-off with the US

It's been a busy few weeks for the Brothers Beer Brewery in Auckland, making and packing as much beer as they can — to send to China, 1News reported on May 14.
"Our last China order is literally double in size," manager Dylan Adams told 1News. "It's gone from one 40ft container to two and, you know, we get those orders pretty regularly."
The US was a big export competitor for beer makers here, but the price of American products has skyrocketed because of the recent tariff stand-off.
Now, China — the world's biggest beer market — wants more of New Zealand’s product.
"They love big, hoppy beer; they love really high alcohol beer; and they love craft beer," Adams said.
Other local brewers were also bottling along, such as Three Sisters in Taranaki.
"The most recent order's about 20,000 cans that we'll be sending over next month, and also along with about 300 kegs as well," said founder Joe Emans.
He knew of around a dozen other Kiwi craft breweries that also exported to China and he expected they'd be benefitting as well.
Although the US and China were rolling back their tariffs, for 90 days at least, brewers here were hoping orders remained strong.

Italy: Diageo to sell production facility in northern Italy to Newlat Food
|
Newlat Food has signed an exclusivity agreement to acquire Diageo’s production facility in Santa Vittoria d'Alba, northern Italy, FoodBev reported on May 14.
Alcohol giant Diageo revealed plans to close the facility, located in the city of Cuneo in Italy’s Piedmont region, in December last year. The site produces and bottles a range of alcoholic beverages, including RTD drinks and ‘low and no’ products.
On May 12, Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (Mimit) released a statement announcing that Italian food group Newlat had presented a binding offer to purchase the assets of the plant. Mimit said the plan included the protection of all 349 workers currently employed at the facility, through the maintenance of production and new product development.
Newlat Food confirmed the news on May 13, stating that the acquisition would enable it to strengthen its offering in the drinks category, a sector where it already generates over €350 million in revenue in the UK.

Belize: Businesses beginning to feel beer shortages following power outage earlier this month
|
Hotels, resorts, and restaurants across Belize are beginning to feel the effects of a beer supply disruption, following a power outage that affected Bowen & Bowen’s production facilities earlier this month, Breaking Belize News reported on May 16.
The company, in a statement released on May 6th, confirmed that a major outage on May 5th had caused equipment failures and halted production on Line 2 — the line responsible for glass-bottled Belikin Beer and Belikin Stout.
As a result, many businesses are now facing a shortage of these popular beverages, particularly glass-bottled beers. One resort owner contacted our newsroom, expressing concern: “We’ve been struggling to restock the bar for our guests. It’s been difficult to find Belikin in bottles — and that’s what most visitors ask for.”
Bowen & Bowen noted that while the issue is temporary, it has increased production of canned beer to help meet demand in the short term. The company’s technical teams are reportedly working around the clock to restore full functionality to their glass bottling line.
In the meantime, local businesses are adapting — some switching entirely to canned beer, while others are facing tough questions from customers expecting the usual Belizean favorite in bottles.

Italy: Royal Unibrew to debut new beer brand in Italy
|
Denmark’s Royal Unibrew has unveiled a new-to-market beer brand that will be brewed at its production facility in San Giorgio di Nogaro, Italy, Global Drinks Intel reported on May 16.
San Zorz, which features branding created by Milan-based agency Dude Design, gives a nod to St George on its packaging. The debut portfolio comprises Fürlan Lager and Non Filtrata, both of which will go sale domestically at respective strengths of 4.8% and 5.2% ABV.
Denmark-headquartered Unibrew acquired the facility in the north-east of Italy two years ago from Birra Castello, a move that the company said at the time would “significantly enhance” its manufacturing and packaging capabilities for cans and glass bottles in the country.
“With the acquisition of the historic brewery in San Giorgio di Nogaro, Royal Unibrew celebrates its new roots with San Zorz: a proud, authentic beer, produced in the heart of this land,” said San Zorz marketing manager Silvia Boscaro. “Born from a deep connection with the local culture, San Zorz is our tribute to Friuli, its people, and a tradition that honours us.”
In October last year, Royal Unibrew acquired the peppermint-flavoured liqueur Minttu through its Hartwall subsidiary from Pernod Ricard.

Russia: Carlsberg’s former Russian unit increases production by 20% in 2024
|
Baltika Brewing Company, one of Russia's leading beer market, increased production by 20% in 2024, Interfax reported on May 14.
"The company is operating at full production capacity. In 2024, we achieved nearly 20% growth compared to the previous year. To grow further, we'll need new production facilities," company president Taimuraz Bolloyev told journalists.
Baltika's investment program has multiple components. "It includes several focus areas, particularly domestic production development and craft brewing expansion. We've also moved into raw material sourcing and trade development. It's a program with multiple elements," he said.
Commenting on media reports about Baltika considering acquiring a snack producer, Bolloyev denied the claims. "No, this isn't true. We're not expanding beyond our core business. Though we are developing small-scale brewing - that's true."
When asked whether former owner Carlsberg had attempted to make contact amid reports of some companies considering returning to Russia, Bolloyev said he had no such information.

Australia: Laperouse gets malting barley accreditation
|
Grains Australia has accredited the variety Laperouse as a malting barley, Grain Central reported on May 16.
It was submitted by SECOBRA Research and Seednet, and was accredited as malting barley following evaluation by the Grains Australia Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee.
Laperouse was developed by SECOBRA Recherches after being bred by the University of Adelaide with
support from the Grains Research and Development Corporation.
Its pedigree includes Commander and Waite Institute coded breeding lines, and it is being marketed as
As the final remaining variety under evaluation in Stage Two for 2024, this now completes assessment for the 2024 malt accreditation program.
It follows AGT’s Cyclops and InterGrain’s Neo CL as having being approved by Grains Australia in recent months as a malting variety.
Laperouse is a medium to high-fermentability variety best suited to medium-rainfall regions across Australia.
It is being marketed to growers as having a low incidence of net blotch leaf disease, as well as a high retention rate over a 2.5mm screen, and a high test weight, with 71.8kg per hectolitre averaged over South Australian National Variety Trial sites in 2023-24.
