USA: AB InBev’s craft portfolio off to a hot start in 2025
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev’s craft portfolio is off to a hot start in 2025, continuing its trend of consistent year-over-year growth. To date in 2025, AB InBev’s craft share has grown +0.36 points following a year of positive growth in 2024, the company announced on May 19.
This growth is driven by consistent focus and investment in A-B's craft scale brands – six key fast-growing products in top styles including Goose Island Beer Hug IPA, Golden Road Mango Cart Wheat Ale, Elysian Space Dust IPA, Goose Island IPA, Wicked Weed Pernicious IPA and Devils Backbone Smash cocktails.
A-B’s strategy has proven successful as its craft scale brands are growing at a much faster rate than the overall craft industry, specifically in high-performing formats like 19.2oz cans.
Some fast facts:
- A-B’s craft scale brands continue to gain momentum, up +11.8% in volume sales this year as a group;
- Goose Island Beer Hug IPA, Elysian Space Dust IPA and Wicked Weed Pernicious IPA are the fastest growing 19.2oz craft IPAs in the industry, gaining share at a much higher rate than next fastest-growing craft family;
- Golden Road Mango Cart is the #1 fastest-growing craft wheat brand;

USA, OH: Bridge’s End Brewing Co. to open its doors on May 21st
|
Bridge’s End Brewing Co. has finally reached its official beginning, 614now.com reported on May 21.
After owner Bill Schirmer announced the concept in late 2021, Bridge’s End shared on May 20 on social media that it plans to open on May 21 at 3 p.m. The brewery is located at 9320 Dublin Rd. in Shawnee Hills.
For Schirmer, a longtime Dublin resident and surgeon, the idea for a Dublin-area brewery came from his home-brewing history.
“I’ve been brewing beer since 1992, and I’ve saved every recipe I’ve ever made. I even have six taps of beer in my home,” he told 614Now in a 2021 interview.
After more than three years and several delays along the way, Bridge’s End has honed its offerings, and decided to focus primarily on craft lagers, as opposed to ales (similar to Columbus concept Gemut Biergarten). Former Watershed Distillery still operator Elliot Hamilton will lead the Bridge’s End beer production. Bridge’s End plans to embrace lower-ABV offerings like Czech and German-style pilsner, helles, dunkel, Kölsche, Berliner weisse, Belgian ale, “and the occasional hoppy pale or IPA.” It aims to produce about 2,000 barrels in its first year of operation.
Their menu is not publicly available yet, But Bridge’s End

USA, OH: Black Diamond Development purchases, rebrands Marietta Brewing Company
|
Black Diamond Brewery & Distillery will be the fifth Black Diamond food and beverage location in Ohio after acquiring the Marietta Brewing Company at 167 Front St. in May, News and Sentinel reported on May 17.
After owners Tony and Dana Styer announced in a Facebook post on Sept. 12, 2024, that they were putting the Marietta Brewing Company up for sale, they limited hours of operation until it was bought out.
The post from the Styers stated that putting their company up for sale after 15 years of community support wasn’t an easy decision for them to make.
On May 13, they announced publicly that the brewery had been officially sold to Black Diamond as the Black Diamond Brewery & Distillery Marietta. The distillery was acquired by the Black Diamond Development Company LLC which is a company that seeks to own historical properties no less than 100 years old around southeast Ohio.
“We’re excited to come to the area and we really appreciate the previous owners for working so closely with us to make this possible,” said spokesperson for Black Diamond Adam Fowler. “Our goal is to pay tribute to their legacy and revitalize the space by staying true to its history.”

USA, VA: Garden Grove Brewing & Urban Winery to close in late June
|
Carytown’s only brewery is tapping out, Richmond Biz Sense reported on May 20.
Garden Grove Brewing & Urban Winery will close in late June, ending a 10-year run at 3445 W. Cary St.
Owner Ryan Mitchell said he’s opting to not renew the brewery’s lease and is now exploring selling the business and its assets.
Mitchell and Mike Brandt co-founded Garden Grove in 2015, just as the area’s craft beer industry was taking off. When it opened, Garden Grove was Virginia’s 100th brewery. Today, that figure stands at nearly 350, according to data from the Brewers Association, a national trade group.
Upon opening a decade ago, Mitchell said they opted to sign a longer-than-typical lease term of 11 years. Taking on the additional years gave them more stability when it came to rent increases, but less flexibility on getting out of it. Now that it’s up, Mitchell said it doesn’t make sense to renew.
“Just like (how) everybody’s having issues with increases in rent, what we’re paying for rent, in my opinion, is too much,” Mitchell said. “Also, 10 years in, I feel honest in saying that we had a good run with it but we’re ready to move on… As a

India: United Breweries leases Ilios Breweries capacity to increase production in Andhra Pradesh
|
United Breweries Ltd. (UBL), India’s largest beer producer and part of the HEINEKEN group, has entered a leasing agreement with Ilios Breweries Pvt. Ltd. to ramp up manufacturing capacity in Andhra Pradesh, CNBC TV18 reported on May 20.
The move is aimed at strengthening its supply chain and meeting rising demand for Kingfisher beer and other offerings in the region. The arrangement, which became effective on May 20, follows excise approval received a day earlier.
UBL already operates a wholly owned brewery in Ranasthalam, Srikakulam district. The additional leased facility is expected to enhance distribution efficiency and support peak season volumes. The company cited evolving consumer preferences and regulatory support for lower-alcohol beverages as key reasons behind the expansion.
The manufacturing tie-up comes weeks after the company posted a strong set of numbers for the January–March quarter. UBL reported a 20.5% year-on-year rise in standalone net profit to ₹97.4 crore, beating the CNBC-TV18 poll estimate of ₹90 crore. Revenue rose 8.9% to ₹2,321.3 crore, and EBITDA jumped 31.2% to ₹186.3 crore, with margins expanding to 8%, ahead of analyst expectations.
Vivek Gupta, MD and CEO of UBL, has expressed confidence in sustaining double-digit growth in both volume and revenue in FY26, with premiumisation as

Australia: Barley exports set to slow significantly in May, experts believe
|
Australia’s barley exports are set to slow significantly by May as stocks in New South Wales and Victoria tighten, UkrAgroConsult reported on May 20.
According to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the country exported 838.79 thousand tonnes of barley in March, including 206.25 thousand tonnes of malting barley (more than double the volume shipped the previous month) and 632.55 thousand tonnes of feed barley (-29%).
The main destinations for malting barley were China – 152.27 thousand tonnes, Vietnam – 25.48 thousand tonnes and Peru – 22 thousand tonnes.
As for feed barley, China was the main buyer – 561.9 thousand tonnes, while Saudi Arabia bought 55.73 thousand tonnes and Vietnam 3.27 thousand tonnes.
Australia’s barley exports are set to slow significantly by May due to declining stocks in New South Wales and Victoria, according to Flexi Grain. However, strong Chinese demand will help the country meet its export targets and bring ending stocks back close to record lows.

Japan: Asahi Breweries CEO blames risse in screentie for declining alcohol consumption
|
A precipitous rise in screentime — be it gaming, social media or digital entertainment — may be to blame for declining alcohol consumption, says Asahi Breweries chief executive Atsushi Katsuki, Bottle Raiders reported on May 20.
On May 18, Katsuki spoke with the Financial Times about plateauing sales across the industry. Though health fears and inflation have frequently been attributed to the trend, Katsuki argues that a simpler explanation may lie on our computer screens. If true, his theory would go a long way toward explaining why younger consumers in particular have picked up sobriety at an unprecedented rate.
“Alcohol used to occupy a much bigger share of people’s entertainment and joy,” Katsuki said. “In the past 10 years, the number of entertaining things has grown including gaming, so I believe alcohol’s share of fun, enjoyment and happiness has decreased.”
Asahi Group is one of the largest brewers in the world, with a market capitalization valued at over $19 billion as of last summer. Katsuki has served as the company’s president and CEO since 2021.
During his tenure, Katuski has steered the brewing giant through a seismic shift in consumption habits. Gen Z is reportedly drinking around one-third less beer and wine than

Germany: Area planted to winter barley down 6.4% this year
|
According to the German National Statistical Office, the area of winter wheat in the country for the 2025 harvest increased by 12.2% compared to the previous season and amounted to 2.78 million hectares.
The weather during the sowing campaign in autumn 2024 was favorable, in contrast to autumn 2023, when rains prevented the sowing of winter crops, especially wheat.
The area of winter rapeseed for the 2025 harvest was expanded to 1.1 million hectares, by 1.5% compared to the previous year.
At the same time, the sowing of winter barley, which is mainly used as animal feed, was reduced by 6.4% to 1.22 million hectares. Farmers switched from barley to wheat and rapeseed, which have more attractive prices.
Thanks to the mild winter, winter crops were almost not damaged by frost, so the area that needs to be resown with spring crops will be small. The area of corn for grain will decrease by 7.3% to 334 thousand hectares.

Australia: Grain Producers Australia welcome news about malting barley market diversification into Latin America
|
Grain Producers Australia (GPA) has welcomed news about malting barley market diversification and growth opportunities in Australian export trade into Latin America, Australian Rural & Regional News reported on May 19.
An article published on May 19 highlighted recent market diversification and growth activity, with benefits for Australian grain producers and broader industry, while boosting national economic prosperity.
GPA Chair, Barry Large, said these shared outcomes and benefits – from paddock to pint – reflected GPA’s long-standing policy and strategies on export market development and growth; especially the consolidation of ‘industry good’ functions.
“This is refreshing news and shows there’s tremendous appetite and future opportunities for Latin American consumers to taste better beers, brewed with high quality Australian barley,” Mr Large said.
The news article included comments from GPA Southern Grower Director and RD&E Spokesperson, Andrew Weidemann AM, saying this market diversification and expansion of malting barley trade into Latin America was a great success story for the Australian grains supply chain.
‘Firstly, credit has to go to the Australian breeders for developing varieties that fulfill the needs of customers,’ Mr Weidemann said. Here
‘Secondly, organisations such as AEGIC and Grains Australia, with their technical information and market development work, have done a fantastic job in

India & UK: India to slash duties on UK whisky and gin as part of trade deal
|
Manufacturer of the famed single malt Rampur, Radico Khaitan, looks to import ₹250 crore worth of Scotch malt in this fiscal year. According to its MD Abhishek Khaitan, Radico Khaitan, which also brews Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin, is set to benefit substantially from the India-UK free trade agreement (FTA), The Week reported on May 18.
According to the FTA announced earlier in May, India is set to slash duties on UK whisky and gin from 150 per cent to 75 per cent. And this would be slashed further to 40 per cent by year ten.
The maker of Rampur single malt is India’s largest importer of Scotch whisky for use in blending. Moreover, a significant chunk of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) companies—like Allied Blenders & Distillers (ABD) and John Distilleries—import bulk Scotch for blending. This could mean blended drinks and spirits based on Scotch could become more affordable.
Indian whisky drinkers are in for a treat, as these indigenous brands can now offer consumers more choices with better access to high-quality spirits. India drinks the most whisky by volume in the world. In fact, industry body Scotch Whisky Association said that the country imported 192 million bottles of Scotch in 2024.

New Zealand: DB Draught Brewery cuts jobs as demand goes flat
|
A significant drop in expected production has led to the loss of nine jobs at Timaru’s DB Draught Brewery, The Press reported on May 18.
The Washdyke factory, which employs about 60 staff, has also confirmed it will move from two shifts per day to a single shift.
The losses follow consultation with employees, announced last month, which had been driven by an “imminent change” to its forecast production volumes at the site, the company said at the time.
When asked to elaborate on this, DB managing director Matt Wilson said a long-term Australian supermarket chain customer had recently terminated its supply contract.
“Due to increased input costs, we could no longer compete on price, and the contract was awarded to a local Australian brewer,’’ Wilson said.
“Our inability to access the Australian remission scheme for alcohol manufacturers (a breach of the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations agreement) contributed to the loss of this contract as we were unable to compete on a level playing field.’’
This week, a spokesperson for DB said the job cuts in Timaru reflected the discontinuation of a significant contract, “resulting in a material change to our forecasted production volumes at the brewery’’.
“It is a decision that we have not taken

World: Diageo sees significant opportunity to grow Guinness 0.0’s global presence
|
Diageo is taking its Guinness 0.0 non-alcoholic beer global, with chief executive Debra Crew saying there is a “significant opportunity” to grow its international presence, The Irish Independent reported on May 20.
“Guinness is a great example of our growth ambition in action,” Ms Crew said. “Guinness 0.0... has grown at a tremendous rate since launch, but arguably, we are only really getting started on what it can do.”
Diageo is planning to accelerate sales of traditional Guinness and the non-alcoholic version around the world, targeting Gen Z and female drinkers among its key growth levers.
It’s also planning to leverage its sponsorship of sporting events such as the Premier League and a continued focus on the Six Nations rugby championship.
Laura Merritt, president of Diageo’s North America beer market, said there is “significant runway for growth” for Guinness in the market there and that the beer’s sales are “thriving” in the US.
The US market has about $68bn (€60bn) of beer sales every year, while the non-alcoholic beer market there accounts for 1.5pc of sales. Ireland, the UK and the US accounted for 60pc of Guinness net sales in Diageo’s fiscal 2024 year. Guinness is the biggest beer brand in Ireland, accounting for a
