Canada, AB: Alberta’s government walks back beer tax hike
|
Alberta's government has ditched a new fee schedule for breweries that would have seen the province's oldest beer maker pay significantly more in taxes, Yahoo Finance reported on June 5.
The schedule was introduced in February and it substantially lowered the production threshold breweries needed to hit before they had to pay higher fees to the government.
Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally said at the time that the fee hike was supposed to protect small breweries and that "99 per cent" of companies wouldn't pay more.
Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery didn't fall under the 99 per cent, and the company calculated it was going to pay $1.4 million more every year.
Nally's office says the government decided to lower the fees in light of U.S. tariffs and to ensure small breweries are supported as they grow.
The province replaced the fee system as of June 1 in favour of a schedule of more gradual increases.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 5, 2025.

USA, MN: Koronis Brewing opens ist doors in Paynesville
|
It's not all closures in the world of Minnesota breweries, Bring Me The News reported on June 6.
Koronis Brewing in Paynesville has just opened its doors and will celebrate its grand opening from June 6 to 8.
"It was a couple years ago now when we had some community members dreaming about opening up a brewery in the area and creating a new community space," manager and brewer Laura Naujokas tells Bring Me the News.
The ball, or keg, got rolling with Mary Peterson, a Paynesville native who now lives in Portland, Ore. She was keen on the idea of a brewery setting up shop in her hometown. She and a group of community members approached Laura and her husband Alex, who operate the Koronis Kafe houseboat that serves food and drink during the summer months.
They accepted. Alex had a background in the service industry, but Laura did not. "I was a science teacher for almost 10 years," she says. "So, I ended up leaving that field to pursue learning brewing and everything else that comes with managing and running a restaurant."
Construction began in September, and it officially opened on June 1.
The brewpub will serve its own beers and seltzers along

USA, CO: Ska Brewing Co. changes ownership
|
Ska Brewing Co. in Durango was sold to the Ariano and West families last month, company president and co-founder Dave Thibodeau said on June 5, The Durango Herald reported.
This year marks the company’s 30th anniversary. It was founded in 1995 by Thibodeau, Bill Graham and Matt Vincent.
The Ariano family owns A&L Coors Distribution in Durango. Thibodeau said Bob Ariano and Dave West are experienced beer distributors familiar with Ska Brewing and the Durango community. They are also longtime friends.
“They just have more resources, they have a better fleet, they have more people and they're just better equipped to service a broader area,” he said.
Thibodeau declined to disclose Ska Brewing’s sale price.
He said A&L Coors has a distribution warehouse in Alamosa and regularly runs trucks from there to Durango. The plan is to extend distribution to Alamosa and the San Luis Valley.
He said the Ariano and West families have a strong distribution network in Colorado and other states, and he sees a regional and possibly national opportunities in the future.
But for now, Ska Brewing’s distribution focus will remain on Southwest Colorado, he said.
“There couldn't be a better buyer than these two families, because their philanthropic roots in Durango are already so

USA, CA: Standard Deviant opening its newest taproom and production facility on June 6
|
San Francisco’s perennially popular brewery Standard Deviant is opening its newest taproom and production facility on Friday, June 6, San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Standard Deviant will pour more than 20 of its beers from a 30-foot-long bar inside a refurbished shipbuilding facility in Building 12 at Pier 70 in Dogpatch, part of a major redevelopment of the site. Operating partner Paul Duatschek said he and fellow operators Mark DeVito and Peter Vitt are excited to offer their range of brews, which the team cheekily boasts are the “coldest tasting beer in San Francisco.”
Taps at Pier 70 are ready to go with classic European styles like Belgian blondes, Kolsches and a crisp Hefeweissen. Other beers include barrel-aged offerings, West Coast-style IPAs and horchata-flavored nitro cream ales, with an extra rich body. Just like Standard Deviant’s first outpost in the Mission District, beers will be produced in-house and in plain view for anyone curious about the process.
“We always wanted customers to have open access and look at our operations so they understand how we’re making beer in San Francisco,” Duatschek said. The production facility is fitted with a 20-barrel system that can produce between 4,000 and 6,000 barrels of beer per year, roughly

USA, GA: Oconee Brewing Company shuts its doors after more than seven years in operation
|
Oconee Brewing Company, a beloved local craft brewery in Greensboro, has officially shut its doors after more than seven years in operation, Online Athens reported on June 4.
The closure marks the end of an era for the 11,000-square-foot brewery that had become a hub for both locals and visitors since its opening.
The announcement came from the brewery on social media, "We are forever proud of the space we created — but even more proud of the community that filled it with life. Without your support, your stories, and your love for what we poured (both into the glass and into the space), none of this would have been possible."
The primary reason behind the closure stems from the sale of its building at 202 N. West St. According to the social media post, the new owners have decided to take the property in a different direction, one that no longer includes the brewery.
However, in November 2024, Oconee Brewing took to the public with a plea for help as the business faced foreclosure amid more than $1.1 million in debt.
At the time, the owners cited a combination of factors: a national downturn in the craft beer market, soaring SBA loan interest rates,

USA, KS: Pathlight Brewing announces impending closure
|
After five years in business, Pathlight Brewing will be closing its doors, Johnson County Post reported on June 5.
The owners of the Shawnee microbrewery and taproom announced its impending closure on social media this week, garnering lots of sad responses from its regular customers.
Pathlight Brewing opened in 2020.
The brewery occupied a space at 11200 W. 75th St, at the Trailridge Shopping Center in Shawnee.
Local home brewers David Harris and Tanner Vaughn opened Pathlight Brewing in the spring of 2020.
In the post on Facebook, Pathlight’s owners thanked its staff for helping to make Pathlight “a home”, as well as thanking customers for their support over the past five years.
“Your support helped build such a vibrant space, and it couldn’t have been done without you,” the post read. “Thank you for not only walking this path with us, but for lighting the way.”
Later this month, the brewery will “say goodbye” with one last party.
Its fifth anniversary celebration will take place on June 20 at the brewery.

USA, MI: Eternity Brewing Co. closing at the end of the month
|
A brewery in Livingston County plans to close its doors after June, FOX 2 Detroit reported on June 6.
Eternity Brewing Co. in Genoa Township shared this week that it was shuttering for good at the end of the month. A reason for the closure was not provided.
"Running this place has been one of the greatest joys and challenges of my life, but in my current circumstances, I no longer have the ability to keep up the fight. This was not an easy choice, and it’s one that comes with a lot of mixed emotions," owner Ethan Whitesell wrote on Facebook.
This last month of business will include events, barrel releases, and more as the final product is poured.
Whitesell bought the brewery in 2019. He is now asking anyone who may want to purchase the business to contact him.

Croatia: Heineken’s Croatian unit completes EUR25 mln investment
|
The Croatian unit of Dutch brewer Heineken International said on June 6 it has completed a 25 million euro investment ($29 million) plan by launching into trial operation a new beer canning line at its factory in Karlovac, SeeNews reported.
This line is the largest single investment within this investment plan, which was supported by the Croatian government under the investment promotion law, Heineken Hrvatska said in a press release.
The new line has a capacity of 25,000 beer cans per hour, which allows filling up to 1,500 hectolitres of beer per shift, enabling greater production flexibility and faster response to growing consumer demand for canned products, the company said.
The new facility has created 15 new jobs.
The investment plan also included installation of new horizontal and vertical tanks, which increased local production capacity by 36%, the construction of a 2,600 square metre logistics area, and the installation of new air compressors to optimize production processes.

India: Delhi’s microbreweries must certify beer quality before serving it
|
To ensure that microbreweries maintain the quality of their products, the excise department of Delhi govt has issued instructions that samples of freshly brewed beer must be certified by their in-house chemists each day before the alcoholic beverage is served to customers, Times of India reported on June 3.
The excise department has also asked the microbreweries to get their samples tested at least once a month in department-owned laboratories and display the certificate prominently at their premises.
"As per the terms and conditions of the L-11 licence, the beer produced in a microbrewery shall be released for sale only after the said chemist certifies that such beer is fit for human consumption on a daily basis," the excise department said in its order.
"The licensee shall arrange to draw the beer samples once every month and forward the same to the excise laboratory for analysis. The report obtained shall be displayed on the premises of the microbrewery," the order added. The department also asked the owners of microbreweries to send the certificate issued by the chemical examiner for each batch of brewed beer.
There are nearly 10 microbreweries in Delhi that sell freshly brewed beer to customers on the premises. These microbreweries are
