Brazil: Heineken begins modernisation of its Minas Gerais brewery
|
The Heineken Group has begun the modernisation process at its brewery in Passos, Minas Gerais, and expects to start bottling beer in the coming months. The operation aims to increase capacity amid strong demand for premium beers in the country, Valor International reported on June 30.
The project was initially announced in December 2020 with a budget of R$1.8 billion—the group’s largest local investment since arriving in Brazil in 2010. Recently, the plan was modernized, and the figure was raised by 39%, bringing the total investment to R$2.5 billion.
Mauro Homem, vice president of sustainability and corporate affairs for the Heineken Group, told Valor that the new plant will help serve Minas Gerais—currently one of the group’s most important markets—which until now has been supplied by operations in Ponta Grossa (Paraná), Araraquara (São Paulo), and Jacareí (São Paulo). The local factory, he said, represents a significant logistical advantage.
The commissioning of the production line—the phase in which raw materials are integrated into industrial equipment—has just begun. This stage is critical for inspecting systems and ensuring the operation is fully functional.
“The Passos brewery will enable Heineken to continue its evolution in Brazil,” said Mr. Homem.
Since acquiring Brasil Kirin in 2017, the group has expanded

Argentina: Economy Ministry maintains lower export duties for barley and wheat, restores those for soybean and corn to January values
|
Argentina’s Economy Ministry passed a decree restoring soybean and corn export duties to their January values from July 1 onwards. Barley and wheat will remain subject to lower duties until next year, UkrAgroConsult reported on July 1.
The government had already confirmed that the reductions would be temporary, but the move dashes the hopes of producers who had been holding out for a last-minute change of heart.
Friday’s decree established that export duties on wheat and barley will remain at 9.5% until March 31, 2026.
Soybean duties will increase from 26% to 33%, corn and sorghum from 9.5% to 12%, and sunflower from 5.5% to 7%. Wheat flour will remain at 5.5%.
The government initially cut export duties for some agricultural commodities in January. The break was initially intended to last until June, but was then extended to July, and it applied to soybeans, corn, sunflowers, sorghum, and all their byproducts. In May, the administration announced that it would extend the temporary reduction in export duties on wheat and barley, whose sowing is now in full swing, to 2026. These crops will be harvested by the end of the year.
Export duties for a plethora of agricultural goods, known in Argentina as regional products, were

UK: Hot, dry weather drives an early start to barley harvest season
|
Farmers across the UK are rolling out their combines earlier than usual, as hot, dry weather drives an early start to the 2025 harvest season, Farmers Weekly reported on June 30.
With crops maturing up to two weeks ahead of schedule, arable growers are seizing the opportunity to begin cutting winter barley – well before the traditional July start.
In Lincolnshire, George Atkinson at Folkingham Farms began combining on Sunday, reporting encouraging yields despite minimal rainfall.
Meanwhile, over in Cambridgeshire, PX Farms kicked off on Friday, with some early barley yields looking better than expected.
Speaking on June 30, Mr Atkinson said the hybrid winter barley harvest had started on Sunday with a 16ha test cut, and that full-scale combining would continue this week.
“We’re 10 days ahead all the way through the season, from spraying to ripening,” he said. “It’s not a big surprise to us, but combining in June still feels strange.”
His crop, the old Syngenta hybrid Belfry, is performing well despite minimal rainfall this year – just 140mm recorded nearby since January.
“It’s like a desert here now, but the barley’s been on the front foot all season,” he added.
Initial results are encouraging, with yields estimated at about 9.2t/ha, and a bushel weight

France: Spring barley harvesting begins in France
|
Winter wheat and spring barley harvesting began in France, and the winter barley harvest has made significant progress.
According to the state agency FranceAgriMer, 1% of the area under winter wheat (1% on average for the same date over the past five years) and 1% (1%) of the area under spring barley have been threshed by June 23.
The winter barley harvest has been collected from 22% (13%) of the area by June 23. Of this, 21% was threshed last week.
Durum wheat has been harvested from 4% (5%) of the area.
The development of corn crops is proceeding faster than usual. 96% (92%) of the crops are in the 6-8 leaf phase. The share of corn crops in good and very good condition is 81%, the same as a year earlier.

Ukraine: New crop barley prices slightly up this week
|
Prices for new crop barley in Ukraine increased slightly last week. Support came from active demand by traders, processing enterprises, and the insufficient supply from farmers, who were in no hurry to sell and were waiting for more favorable market conditions, APK-Inform reported on July 1.
The harvesting campaign is already underway in four regions of Ukraine - Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Dnipropetrovsk, and as of June 26, 151.6 thousand tonnes of barley had been harvested from 55.4 thousand hectares, with a yield of 27.4 c/ha.
Bid prices for new crop barley increased over the past week by 200-400 UAH per tonne and were formed within the range of 8,200-9,000 UAH per tonne CPT.

Ireland: Diageo-owned Roe & Co distillery to pause production
|
Diageo-owned Roe & Co has become the fifth Irish whiskey distillery to pause production, following Pernod Ricard’s Midleton Distillery, Tullamore and Dublin Liberties Distillery, Drinks Digest reported on July 1.
A Diageo spokesperson said: “In order to optimise resources and support the sustainable future growth of our business, we have made the decision to put an extended pause on distillation at the Roe & Co Distillery.
“The visitor centre will remain open to the public, and we will continue to blend and package Roe & Co to meet existing and new consumer demand using existing inventory.”
The former Guinness Power Station in Dublin was regenerated into a new visitor experience and urban distillery for Roe & Coe back in 2019. It was Diageo’s first move back into Irish whiskey following its disposal of Bushmills in 2014.
The name Roe & Co was a tribute to George Roe, who helped to build the golden era of Irish whiskey in the 19th century. His distillery at Thomas Street in Dublin extended over 17 acres and was Ireland’s largest exporter of whiskey. As neighbours for hundreds of years, George Roe and Guinness were the two biggest names at the heart of Dublin’s historic brewing and distilling quarter.
