Brewery news USA, MI: The Church Brewery opens in former church in Hyde
Unique features of a new brewery in Hyde include a pipe organ, pews and a baptismal font, TV6 reported on July 4.

That’s because the old Lutheran church at 5133 I Road is now The Church Brewery.

There are 12 craft beers on tap with names that give a nod to the building’s history, including St. Paul’s Porter, Ale-eluia amber ale and a light lager called Holy Wah-Ter.

Visitors can also try the brewery’s house-made wines, play games and after this weekend, taste test a new menu item -- hard cider.

Larger parties can rent out the upstairs space or the whole brewery. And in the next few weeks, the brewery will open its fenced outdoor area with umbrella-shaded picnic tables.

Owner Sarah Nault says mingling the old with the new was personal for her.

“My grandparents were married here, my parents were married here and myself,” Nault said. “I just really wanted to keep the nostalgia of it and it’s obviously beautiful as it is. So, we just had to tweak it a little bit.”

But Nault says what she didn’t ‘tweak’ was the outdoor sign. It’s the last message the former church put out for its congregation:

‘Running low on faith? Drop in for a fill-up!’

Brewery news USA, MN: Alloy Brewing decides to close later this month
Alloy Brewing in Coon Rapids announced it plans to close down later this month amid ongoing challenges navigating the country’s economy, kstp.com reported on July 3.

“This is not a message we ever wanted to have to share,” the company wrote in a statement. “Alloy Brewing Company will be closing our doors permanently as of a to-be-determined date in mid-July.”

Alloy Brewing said the decision was a difficult one to make, but it was the one they needed to make, as they have faced challenges operating the business amid rising costs and supply chain issues.

“It’s the same old story: Like many small businesses today, we’ve faced rising costs, supply chain hurdles, and an incredible decrease in sales over the last three years that have made it increasingly difficult to operate sustainably,” it said.

Alloy Brewing said it wouldn’t make sense for the company to continue operating amid these struggles.

“We are so incredibly grateful to everyone who shared a pint with us, celebrated milestones in our taproom, and helped us turn a passion into a purpose,” the business said.

The final date for Alloy Brewing hasn’t been decided yet, but the company has stated that it plans to close in mid-July.

Brewery news Ghana: Diageo completes Guinness Ghana Breweries disposal
Guinness Ghana Breweries PLC has formally announced the completion of a strategic transition in its ownership structure, with Castel Group acquiring an 80.4 percent majority stake from global beverage giant Diageo. The move marks a significant development in the domestic beverage industry, as Castel assumes operational leadership of one of the country’s most established brewers, The BF Online reported on July 3.

The transaction, which received regulatory approval earlier this year, positions Castel as controlling shareholder of Guinness Ghana while Diageo retains ownership of the Guinness brand and a portfolio of related products.

These will continue to be brewed and distributed in the country under long-term licencing and royalty agreements. In addition, Guinness Ghana will maintain distribution rights for Diageo’s international premium spirits under a separate commercial arrangement.

Castel’s acquisition reflects a broader ambition to strengthen its footprint across the continent, with Ghana now becoming its 22nd market in Africa. The French beverage group brings a deep regional distribution network and operational experience, which it plans to leverage in expanding Guinness Ghana’s market presence.

“This transition affirms Castel’s belief in Ghana’s long-term economic potential. We are committed to enhancing Guinness Ghana’s operations and building on its strong foundation,” Castel Group CEO Gregory Clerc said ...More info on site

This year, Ukrainian farmers sowed 753.3 thousand hectares with spring barley, which is 80.7 thousand hectares less than last year (834 thousand hectares), AgroTimes reported on June 30, with reference to data from the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and the State Statistics Service.

The largest number of spring barley was sown in:

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, the area under winter barley this year is 611 thousand hectares, which is 44.4 thousand hectares more than last year (566.6 thousand hectares).

Brewery news UK: Alcohol-free beer sales hit record highs
The alcohol-free beer category is seeing record sales as it continues to rise in popularity amongst Brits, according to leading alcohol-free beer brand Lucky Saint.

Lucky Saint, the UK’s #1 dedicated alcohol-free beer brand, has posted back-to-back record months as the category continues to drive growth within the total beer category. The low and no beer category continues to perform well, with the category showing +22% YoY growth whilst the total beer category remains relatively flat at +0.9% YoY growth (Circana, value sales, 12wk, 14.06.25).

The category story is reflected in the on-trade too, shown with the latest figures from the Morning Advertiser Beer Report. Calling low and no alcohol beer the “definitive winner” when it comes to on-trade value sales, sales have risen from £81.9m in 2023 to £118.3m in 2024, and now at £184.7m – representing a rise of 125.4% from two years ago (CGA by NIQ, value sales, 12wk, 14.06.25).

This comes off the back of a new industry report released from research consultancy KAM and the UK’s #1 dedicated alcohol-free beer brand Lucky Saint, confirming that alcohol-free has become the new normal. Nearly 40 million UK adults (76%) are now actively choosing to drink less alcohol, with behaviour shifts ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: New high-alcohol beer releases seen as strategy targeting niche markets
As low-alcohol beers have established themselves as the mainstream in South Korea’s liquor market, the domestic beer industry has recently seen a series of new high-alcohol beer releases. This trend is interpreted as a strategy targeting niche markets amidst a growing 'healthy pleasure' trend that leads the low-alcohol craze, ChosunBiz.EN reported on July 3.

According to the relevant industry on the 3rd, OB launched 'CAS Lemon Squeeze 7.0' with an alcohol content of 7% last month. It maintained the flavor of 'CAS Lemon Squeeze', released in 2023, but increased the alcohol content from the previous 4.5% to 7%. Convenience store GS25 also introduced 'Real Beer Ball' with an alcohol content of 13% last April. This product is recommended to be mixed with carbonated water, tonic water, or lemon juice.

In a situation where low-alcohol beverages are dominant, the emergence of high-alcohol beers is unusual. Since the pandemic, the culture of office gatherings and drinking has decreased, and more health-conscious consumers have caused the non-alcoholic and low-alcohol market to grow rapidly. According to the market research firm Euromonitor, the scale of the domestic non-alcoholic beer market expanded over 55%, from 41.5 billion won in 2021 to 64.4 billion won in 2023.

Brewery news Germany: Drinks company Haus Cramer Group to produce the Efes Pilsener beer in Germany
German drinks company Haus Cramer Group has struck a deal to produce the Efes Pilsener beer brand, Yahoo! Finance reported.

HC Drinks Solutions, a division of Haus Cramer Group, confirmed a “strategic partnership” with Efes Deutschland on July 1.

HC Drinks Solutions, established in 2023 as Haus Cramer’s services arm, specialises in contract production, packaging, bottling and warehousing.

Efes Pilsener will be brewed at Haus Cramer’s facility in the town of Warstein, with production set to begin in “fall 2025”, adhering to the original recipe.

HC Drinks Solutions said the deal “significant benefits” for wholesalers by "optimising logistics" and offering a "one-stop" solution.

Efes Deutschland, part of Anadolu Efes since 2010, has been supplying German consumers with Efes beers for more than a decade. Just Drinks has asked Haus Cramer which company handled the brewing of Efes in Germany before this deal.

In the statement, Adriano Leo, managing director of HC Drinks Solutions, described Efes Pilsener as a “significant addition” to the company’s portfolio.

Daniel Barbulescu, market development director of Anadolu Efes, added: “This partnership strengthens our position in the German market, allowing us to continue producing Efes Pilsener to the highest standards. It offers long-term planning security and creates ideal conditions for our growth in Europe ...More info on site

Whisky news UK & Argentina: Scotch whisky receives Geographical Indication status in Argentina
Argentina has given Scotch Whisky its seal of approval as the first ever international product to receive Geographical Indication (GI) status in the country, the UK government announced on July 3.

The protection recognises what makes a dram of Scotch truly special – centuries of craftsmanship, distinctive production methods, and that unmistakable Scottish character that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

This legal protection ensures products labelled as Scotch Whisky are genuine and meet strict production standards. This will help tackle counterfeit products, giving shoppers confidence they are buying an authentic product and distillers reassurance to expand their presence in a market without risk of imitation products undermining their reputation.

This also marks the first international product to gain legal protection in Argentina, highlighting the increasing global demand for authentic British products overseas. British food and drink exports reached record levels in 2024, with GI products accounting for approximately 25% of all UK food and drink exports and an estimated annual value exceeding £6 billion.

Daniel Zeichner, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, said:

“Argentina’s legal protection of Scotch Whisky marks another triumph for this world-class British export.

“In just six months we’ve driven a breakthrough trade agreement with India while securing legal protections for dozens ...More info on site

Brewery news Pakistan: Pakistan’s top brewer betting on soft drinks
A pungent fug of malt and yeastiness hangs over Murree Brewery, Pakistan ’s biggest and oldest producer of alcoholic drinks.

The company is an outlier in a country where alcohol is outlawed for everyone except non-Muslims, who make up some 9 million people out of 241 million. Pakistan, an Islamic republic, banned booze for Muslims in the 1970s, Huron Daily Tribune reported on July 3.

Murree Brewery has strong financials despite the prohibition, thanks to its history, scant competition and a small, thirsty and predominantly elite consumer base.

But the government exerts significant control over the sale and marketing of alcoholic beverages through red tape and high taxes, pushing brewery chairman Isphanyar Bandhara to expand the company's footprint in Pakistan's non-alcoholic drinks industry, which, although bigger, is more crowded and less lucrative.

“Even I tell my staff of about 2,200 that we cannot sit on our laurels by selling alcohol,” said Bandhara, the third generation of his family to run the 165-year-old business that was founded by the British. “It’s a restricted market, so we have to rely and focus more on the non-alcoholic side. That’s where I think I would like to flex my muscles and take credit, rather than being a liquor ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Heineken launches Italian Birra Moretti in South Korea
Birra Moretti has landed in South Korea. Heineken Korea announced it, underlining its desire to expand imports and distribution on the Korean national territory of what is considered the number one beer brand in Italy, born in Udine in 1859 and now present in over 40 countries around the world, Efanews reported on July 3.

The alcohol content is 4.6% and the product is available in two types: a 330 ml bottle and a 440 ml can. The bottled product can be purchased at high-end Italian restaurants nationwide, while the canned product can be purchased at convenience stores and department stores.

Birra Moretti is a premium lager beer born in Udine, Northern Italy, in 1859: it is sold in over 40 countries worldwide. Characterized by a unique flavor of hops and toasted whole wheat, it pairs well with a variety of foods. It is particularly loved by locals for its pairing with pasta and pizza, which are typical of Italian menus.
