UK: Dark, seasonal, low- and no-alcohol beers expected to be among biggest drivers of growth in beer market
|
Dark beers, seasonal styles and low and no-alcohol are expected to be among the biggest drivers of growth in beer in the coming months, as customers continue to seek out top quality pints even as health and finances continue to be priorities, Scottish Licensed Trade News reported on July 7.
The beer category – much like other drinks categories and the trade overall – doesn’t have its problems to seek in 2025.
Serena Smith of Heineken UK said that beer consumption is dropping ‘across all age groups’, with that piling more pressure on to venues to choose the right products for their customer base.
“Beer might be the UK’s favourite alcoholic drink, but the way people use pubs and consume beer is constantly evolving,” said Smith.
“For example, as with individuals, groups generally go out on fewer occasions, but they tend to treat themselves when they do. We are also in the midst of a move towards moderation and considered lifestyle choices, with No & Low Alcohol options significantly growing in popularity.”
It’s not all bad news, though, with Smith quoting CGA figures that found wet-led pubs in Scotland have seen a 4.9% growth in value terms in the course of

Malaysia: Heineken sales could be impacted by August price hike
|
Heineken Malaysia Berhad is set to implement price increases across the majority of its product portfolio, ranging from 2% to 8%, effective August 1, 2025, for on-trade channels and September 1, 2025, for off-trade channels. The move, driven by persistent increases in input costs, aims to defend the group’s profit margins, Business Today reported on July 7.
This marks Heineken’s second price adjustment in just over a year, following a previous hike of approximately 5% to 8% in April 2024.
Maybank Investment Bank Research, in a recent report, highlighted that while beer consumption typically exhibits some price stickiness, the added pressure of inflation and soft consumer spending in the second half of 2025 could extend the recovery period for Heineken’s sales volume.
Given the duopoly nature of the Malaysian beer market, it is widely anticipated that HEIM’s competitor, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, will likely follow suit with similar price increases. Historically, industry-wide price adjustments have led to weaker sales volumes in the subsequent two to three months.
Consequently, Maybank IB Research has lowered its earnings estimates for Heineken Malaysia for the financial years 2025 to 2027 by 6% per annum. This adjustment factors in a revised FY2025 volume growth assumption to a contraction of

USA: Mexican imports continue to dominate beer segment in latest Hot Brands list
|
Impact Databank has released its latest “Hot Brands” list for beer, cider, and flavored malt beverages (FMBs), highlighting the top performers in the U.S. market for 2024. The annual list, published in the June 1&15 issue of Impact, recognizes brands that have shown strong growth and influence in a challenging year for the overall beer industry, Vinetur reported on July 8.
The 2024 list features 34 brands, with 16 making their debut. The selection criteria include established brands with double-digit growth over the past three years, those with at least 15% growth in 2024, brands among the top ten in their category with at least 5% growth last year and 15% since 2021, and significant new product launches.
Mexican imports continue to dominate the beer segment, led by Constellation Brands’ Modelo, which grew from 196.2 million to 210 million cases—a 7% increase. Pacifico, another Constellation import, posted a notable 21.5% jump to reach 25.2 million cases. Modelo Chelada also made the top five with a 5% increase.
Domestic beers are present but less prominent on the list. Coors Banquet from Molson Coors saw an 11% rise to 26.2 million cases. Boston Beer Company’s Twisted Tea led the FMB category with a 10.5% increase,

Brazil: Non-alcoholic beer sales continue to rise year after year
|
Consumption of non-alcoholic beer in Brazil continues to rise year after year. According to Euromonitor data, 700 million litres of this beverage were sold in 2023—more than double the volume recorded in 2021, when sales reached 340 million litres, and five times more than in 2019, when the market totaled 140 million litres.
The most recent forecast from the same consulting firm projects that non-alcoholic beer sales will reach 780 million litres in 2024, confirming the strength of a trend that is becoming firmly embedded in the preferences and lifestyles of Brazilian consumers. In 2025, sales are expected to rise further, reaching 880 million litres.
According to Márcio Maciel, executive director of the National Union of the Beer Industry (Sindicerv), the category's significant growth is directly related to changing consumer behavior and industry innovation. "Non-alcoholic beers offer flavor, quality, and innovation. The industry has understood this trend and has invested heavily in technology to offer products as good as traditional beers," Maciel stated.

India: Beer maker Bira 91 re-enters Uttar Pradesh through new manufacturing and distribution deal
|
B9 Beverages' Bira 91 has re-entered Uttar Pradesh in India through a new manufacturing and distribution deal and has revealed plans to develop a local brewery in the state, Yahoo! Finance reported on July 7.
According to a statement from Bira 91, its products are now being manufactured through a partnership with an unnamed "in-state brewery".
The group said it had also committed over Rs2bn ($23.3m) towards establishing its own brewery in Uttar Pradesh.
The group expects the facility to be operational from next year, adding the site "will further enable local production, reduce lead times and improve profitability in the state".
According to Bira 91, the market in Uttar Pradesh has grown from making up 3.5% of beer sales in India in 2018 to an estimated 12-13% in 2025.
As part of the roll-out, the company will be re-introducing Bira 91 Boom, Rise, White, and Gold to consumers in major cities across the state.
The move, the group said, is key to Bira 91's ambition to “dominate India's premium beer segment”.
Ankur Jain, founder and CEO of parent company B9 Beverages said: “We are in the midst of a remarkable turnaround.
“The past few years were tough but we’ve rebuilt a company that’s ready to scale. Our

Tanzania: Young urban consumers redefining Tanzania’s beer market
|
For sure, once upon a time, the Tanzanian beer drinker was a no-nonsense, bitter-beer loving, high-Alcohol by Volume (ABV) connoisseur.
But things are changing fast and it is not just the hops. Today’s young urban consumers in Tanzania are trading in strong, bitter brews for smoother, lighter and lower alcohol alternatives, the Daily News reported on July 7.
If your uncle’s fridge still screams “serious beer for serious men,” your cousin’s probably chilling with a Silver lager, selfie in one hand and a sip-friendly bottle in the other.
Welcome to the new age of Tanzanian beer, where less is more and “lite” means both calories and attitude.
Generation Z wants a buzz, not a brawl According to the Global Beer Report 2024, the premium and lighter-style beer segment has grown by an impressive 40 per cent over the past five years, a shift powered largely by younger, urban drinkers.
Millennials and Generation Z are not just rejecting bitterness in taste; they are rejecting bitterness in life. These consumers are drinking for vibe, not volume.
For them, beer is a social accessory, not a gateway to karaoke disasters. Shedding light on this, Heineken’s Tanzania Country Manager, Obabiyi Fagade, is not surprised.
“We are seeing a real change in

France: French barley, wheat harvests speed ahead
|
Harvesting of wheat and barley was running well ahead of the usual pace by June 30, farm office FranceAgriMer said on Friday, July 4, as hot weather sped up field work in the European Union’s biggest grain producer, Business Recorder reported.
Farmers had harvested 11% of the soft wheat crop by June 30, up from 1% a week earlier and surpassing a five-year average of 4% for the same week, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.
For winter barley, the first major cereal to be harvested at the start of summer, 70% of the crop had been gathered by June 30, up from 22% a week earlier and well ahead of a five-year average of 39%. Durum wheat harvesting was 33% complete, against a five-year average of 17%, while spring barley harvesting was 14% done, ahead of a five-year average of 5%.
France and other parts of Europe have experienced scorching temperatures in the past week. Analysts said the heat should not hurt most wheat and barley and should hasten harvesting by ripening crops.
However, there is growing concern about the impact of hot, dry conditions on maize, which is approaching its crucial pollination phase.
Ratings of French grain maize crops showed 78% were in

France: French whisky sales surpass 1 mln bottles per year
|
French whisky is on a roll, with over a million bottles sold in 2024, mainly in France, Connexion France reported on July 6.
From one distillery in Brittany, which started producing in the early 1980s, there are now 138 distilleries in the country, each producing distinctive whisky.
Originally centred around the regions of Brittany, Alsace and Lorraine, whisky producers are now concentrated in the Charente region.
Cognac producers realised they could take advantage of new EU laws to use their stills for whisky outside the strictly controlled distilling season for Cognac, which usually runs from November to February.
Some are hoping that whisky will provide a cushion if current problems selling Cognac overseas, caused by both China and the United States putting tariffs and other blocks on the spirit, continue.
“We do not compete with Cognac, which is a small market in France compared to the rest of the world, but mainly with Scottish, Irish and other whiskys,” said Christian Bec, one of the founders of Twelve distillery in Laguiole (Aveyron) and president of the trade body Fédération du Whisky de France (FWF).
“Instead we battle in the very competitive market for whisky, which is a much more popular drink in France than Cognac, and slowly

Australia: Suntory Oceania officially opens its new AUD400m facility in Queensland
|
Suntory Global Spirits has launched Suntory Oceania, its AUD3bn (US$2bn) multi-beverage category tie-up in Australia with Frucor Suntory, Global Drinks Intel reported on July 7.
The partnership between the two Suntory-owned companies, which was first announced almost exactly two years ago, has officially opened its new AUD400m facility in Ipswich, Queensland this week. The manufacturing and distribution site, on the outskirts of Brisbane in the east of the country, is capable of producing “20m cases per annum at start-up” and has the capacity to expand to 50m cases in the future.
Suntory Oceania has been labelled as the fourth-largest beverage group in the region. The subsidiary intends to add New Zealand to its footprint at the start of next year.
The tie-up covers functions including manufacturing, sales and distribution for a combined portfolio of 40 brands, including Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark alongside the Hibiki and Canadian Club whiskies. As well as premium spirits and RTDs, the business will also be responsible for a range of non-alcoholic drinks brands.
“Our mission is to bring the best of Suntory to Oceania and demonstrate the immense confidence we have in Australia’s growth potential,” said Suntory Oceania CEO Dai Minato, who was appointed in February.
Last month, Suntory
