In second and third place respectively for May-shipped feed barley were Mexico on 33,000t and Peru on 20,604t.
On malting barley, the May total of 135,136t was up 33pc from 101,690t shipped in April, with China on 121,561t, Japan on 9320 and Vietnam on 2202t the three biggest destinations.

India: Craft beer maker Bira 91 working to regain lost fizz in India
|
After a turbulent year marked by regulatory hurdles and operational disruptions, B9 Beverages' craft beer brand Bira 91 is working to regain its lost fizz in the Indian market, inside.beer reported on July 10.
The company ceased production at its largest facility in Andhra Pradesh in March 2025, allegedly due to non-payment of excise dues, leading to a dramatic decline in production output—from 2.2 million cases per month (180,000 hl) to as low as 10,000–20,000 cases (820–1,640 hl) currently.
Despite claims by Bira 91 that all brewery operations remain active and that the shift is part of a broader asset-light strategy, sources confirmed that the Andhra facility, previously accounting for 25–30% of total capacity, has been fully vacated and its contract terminated. Reports also indicate that operations at the Madhya Pradesh-based Tripti Brewery have stopped, leaving the Mysuru plant as the company’s only currently functioning facility, with output capped at about 20,000 cases per month (1,640 hl) under a contract brewing model.
The brand’s challenges are not limited to operational scale-backs. A bureaucratic snafu triggered by removing the word “Private” from the company’s legal name in anticipation of a 2026 IPO led to a compliance breakdown across multiple states. The change required

Ireland: Department of Finance comments on claims government may be securing up to €100,000 in excise duty and VAT for every acre of malting barley
|
Ireland’s Department of Finance (DoF) has clarified that the amount of excise duty alcoholic beverages are subject to “depends on the category it falls within, the volume and its alcohol content which is expressed as a percentage of volume”, Agriland reported on July 10.
The clarification follows claims from members of the Irish whiskey distilling sector that the government may be securing up to €100,000 in excise duty and VAT for every acre of malting barley that is dedicated to whiskey production.
Co. Wexford–based malting barley grower, Art Murphy, has estimated that approximately €48,000 is generated in the form of excise duty and various VAT payments for every acre of malting barley.
He has also claimed that an additional €52,000 of tax revenues are generated as whiskey passes along the wholesaling and retail supply chains.
The DoF response to these claims outlined that alcoholic beverages are subject to excise duty in the form of Alcohol Products Tax (APT).
According to the department, APT is an excise duty on the production and importation of alcohol products in Ireland.
Council Directive 92/83/EEC lays down a “harmonised approach for the application of excise duties to alcohol and alcoholic beverages in the EU”.
The directive includes provisions defining categories of alcohol
