World: Debra Crew leaves Diageo after tough two years
|
The chief executive of Diageo has left by "mutual agreement" after a tough two years at the helm of the FTSE 100 drinks firm, MSN reported on July 16.
Debra Crew, who took over in the summer of 2023 following the sudden death of long-time boss Sir Ivan Menezes, had come under pressure from investors over performance.
Shares in the maker of Johnnie Walker whisky and Guinness stout, during her time in charge, had plunged by more than 40%.
They gained more than 3%, and were leading the FTSE 100, when the Financial Times first reported that her departure was imminent.
It was later confirmed by the company, which gave no reasons for the move.
Diageo only said that it was sticking to its forecasts for this year and next and that Ms Crew would be replaced, on an interim basis, by chief financial officer Nik Jhangiani.
The share price, which has outperformed rivals despite its struggles, reflects the post pandemic decline in people drinking at home.
Some analysts have suggested that she did not convince shareholders over Diageo's strategy in the wake of this shift, with a turnaround plan revealed in May, which aimed to slash costs, seen as failing to go far in enough.

UK: UK’s grain harvest off to the fastest start since 2006 due to hot weather
|
Long dry spells in the spring and recent hot temperatures mean that harvest is off to the fastest start since at least 2006 (earliest available harvest report) in the UK, with multiple reports of winter barley being cut in June, AHDB reported on July 14.
The first harvest report of the 2025/26 season has been released, covering the beginning of harvest up to 9 July 2025.
Produced with data collected by The Andersons Centre and compiled by AHDB, the report is based on a sample survey of farmers in Great Britain and Northern Ireland and will provide figures on harvest progress throughout the harvest season.
Due to a band of heavy rainfall during the weekend of 5–6 July, there was a slight pause in combining, though harvest pace has since picked up.
Winter barley harvest is progressing rapidly, owing to the dry weather either side of 5–6 July.
However, progress is highly variable both within and between regions.
Overall, it is estimated that 10% of the UK winter barley area was harvested by 9 July 2025.
This is ahead of the same time last year when harvest was 7% complete, and the five-year average of 6% complete at this point in the season.

South Korea: HiteJinro to introduce premium Japanese whiskey "Fuji" series in South Korea
|
HiteJinro announced on the 14th that it will introduce the premium Japanese whiskey "Fuji" series of four types for the first time in Korea. With this, it has completed a total lineup of six types, following the previous import of "Fuji Sanroku Signature Blend" and "Fuji Single Malt Whiskey" last year, ChosunBiz.en reported on July 14.
According to HiteJinro on that day, the products being introduced this time are "Fuji Blended," "Fuji Single Blended," "Fuji Single Grain," and "Fuji Single Malt 17 Years."
The Gotemba distillery, which produces the Fuji series, was established by the Kirin Group in 1973. Located in the forests of Mount Fuji, it uses clear and soft water that has undergone a long natural purification process. It is a place where malt whiskey (made primarily from barley malt) and grain whiskey (made primarily from grains other than barley) in the styles of the United States, Canada, and Scotland can be produced simultaneously at a single distillery.
Fuji Blended is a limited edition aimed at the European and American markets. It is characterized by fruity aromas such as European pear, sweet flavors of red fruits, and a refreshing note of wood. Fuji Single Blended is the standard of blended whiskey
