Canada & USA: Massive US corn crop pressuring Canadian feed barley prices
|
A massive U.S. corn crop is pressuring Canadian feed barley prices, Sasktoday reported on September 3.
Farmers south of the 49th parallel are projected to harvest a record 425.26 million tonnes of the cereal grain, which would be 35.6 million tonnes larger than the previous record of 389.67 million tonnes set in 2023-24.
The USDA’s latest production estimate temporarily pushed December corn futures below US$4 per bushel.
That bloated U.S. corn crop is pressuring feed barley prices in Western Canada, which are down about 20 per cent from their summer highs.
“With the massive amount of corn that is available to come up north, it definitely keeps a cap on all the other commodities,” said Lukas Biensch, senior manager of commercial grain with Johnston’s Grain.
The United States is forecast to export a record 73 million tonnes of corn, and some of that will be headed to Canada.
The U.S. typically ships about 1.5 to two million tonnes of corn to Canada, but some years it can be a lot more than that.
For instance, in 2021-22 it exported six million tonnes due to the combination of a short Canadian barley crop and an abundance of U.S. corn.
Biensch has seen one trade forecast calling for 2.4 million

USA, NY: Gem Creek Brewing Co. looking to open its doors sometime in September
|
Years ago, Guy Mosher started out making wine. More recently, his son-in-law, Zach Reynolds, was all about bourbon and whiskey and dreamed of distilling his own.
Well, forget that, at least for now. After transitioning to brewing beer, their IPAs, pilsners, lagers and stouts will soon make a splash when their Gem Creek Brewing Co. opens sometime in September just outside of the Roseland Waterpark property and as close as you can get to the wake park without getting wet.
The Waterloo, Seneca County, duo switched to beer slowly, at first because they developed a mutual taste for Tree House Brewing IPAs, then began appreciating products closer to home like Rising Storm, Mortalis and the Other Half. Acting on the conversations that sipping a beer or two tend to lead to, namely, they thought, why not make their own?
Just before the pandemic, Reynolds, who married Mosher's daughter Amber five years ago, was able to convince his father-in-law they should try.
“Finally, he said, ‘If you make something and it’s drinkable, then we’ll look into it,” Reynolds said.
Mosher’s initial thought when presented with Reynolds’ beer?
“Geez, this is drinkable,” Mosher said. “That was the spark that lit the

USA, CA: Main Street Brewery to shutter for good after nearly three decades in business
|
A downtown Pleasanton staple is closing up shop later this month after serving the community for nearly three decades, marking the second recent business closure on Main Street with Starbucks making its exit back in July, Pleasanton Weekly reported on September 2.
Matt Billings, owner of Main Street Brewery, said that after 30 years, he and his wife — Sharon Billings — felt like it was time to move on to the next chapter of their lives, which is why they decided to close the brewery on Sept. 21.
“The time has come,” Billings said regarding the closure.
First established in 1996, the downtown pub and restaurant is one of the last remaining places on Main Street reminiscent of a dive bar. Walking through the front entrance, patrons are greeted by the makeshift stage and an old-school bar filled with regular customers and folks looking to enjoy some cold drinks and food.
Since its establishment, Billings said the brewery — located on the north end of downtown at 830 Main St. — has become a popular destination for many members of the community. He said he and his team are honored to have served all of those families, which makes the announcement of the

USA, CA: 21st Amendment Brewery shutting down after 25 years of operation
|
The Bay Area’s 21st Amendment Brewery is shutting down after 25 years of operation. According to a report from Brewbound on September 3, founders Shaun O’Sullivan and Nico Freccia plan to slowly cease operations at the San Leonardo production facility over the next 60 days, with the goal of shuttering completely by early November. They aim to keep the taproom and 2nd Street San Francisco brewpub open for as long as possible, depending on staffing.
The news comes as a bit of a shock considering the fact that just last week, O’Sullivan and Freccia announced that they would be stepping back from day-to-day operations after bringing in a new CEO.
“We’ve brought in a new CEO through a new partnership aimed at bringing in suppliers both inside and outside the beer space, with the goal of developing a broader platform and filling capacity at our San Leonardo production facility,” O’Sullivan remarked in an Instagram post. “I’ll be taking some much-needed time off, then exploring future opportunities. I’ll see you all around the bend. The story continues…”
According to Brewbound, the plans with this new leadership have been in place since at least early July. However, last week, a financial lender working with 21st

USA, CO: Banded Oak Brewing Company to host a farewell party on September 6
|
A brewery that has been serving hops on South Broadway in Denver for about 10 years now is hosting a farewell party on Saturday, September 6 before it closes its doors for good, KDVR reported.
Owner Will Curtin told FOX31 that while it is the end of an era for one brand, he is looking forward to a new endeavour in the local beer scene.
Banded Oak Brewing Company, located at 470 S. Broadway, grew a loyal fan base of regulars over the years and was one of several venues to host musicians for the annual Underground Music Showcase.
The company announced its plans to close in early July, and the time has come. On Saturday, there will be an Oktoberfest-style farewell party with live music, beer and food to send off the brand’s legacy.
“The farewell party is essentially saying goodbye to the brand. Banded Oak, you know, we’ve been on Broadway for 10 years. We’ve specialized in barrel-aged beers, big, full-bodied, high alcohol, delicious, complex beers. The farewell party is to say goodbye to that,” Curtin said.
He said one thing he and brewer Chris will miss the most is the people of South Broadway.
“It’s been sort of a meeting place, a place

USA, OR: Assembly Brewing shutters last remaining location
|
Oregon’s only Black-owned-and operated brewery has closed its last remaining location, just months after shutting down its flagship space, KOIN.com reported on September 3.
Assembly Brewing recently announced the closure of its business on 2934 NE Alberta St. The Northeast Portland spot, known as the family-friendly “Assembly Annex,” serving beer and Detroit-style pizza, opened in February 2024.
The original brewpub on 6112 SE Foster Rd. shuttered in May, after six years of operations. When customers asked whether the Alberta spot would remain open, the business said, “for now, yes!!”
In the online message announcing the second location’s closure, owner Greg Johnson revealed he is excited and hopeful for the future of craft beer — but his business has faced several challenges since its debut.
“The craft beer industry is dynamic and ever-evolving and we navigated through various hurdles, from heightened costs and market fluctuations to the impacts of global events,” Johnson wrote. “Each challenge taught us resilience and adaptability. Unfortunately, the hits kept coming and we no longer have a financial cushion to weather the storms ahead. We want to encourage everyone to continue exploring the vibrant Oregon craft beer scene, especially here in Portland.”
Earlier this year, around the same time that Johnson shuttered

USA, AL: Oversoul Brewing announces plans to close at the end of September
|
After nearly seven years of service, Oversoul Brewing in Helena has announced its plans to close at the end of September, Shelby County Reporter said.
The decision to shut down was announced in a statement released on Oversoul’s Facebook page on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 2.
“After nearly seven years, we regret to announce that Oversoul will be ceasing operations at the end of September,” the statement read.
“Our time in Oldtown Helena has been marked by unforgettable experiences, exceptional music and outstanding beer. Nevertheless, it’s time to chase other passions and start new projects.”
Oversoul opened on May 10, 2019, when that year’s edition of the Buck Creek festival got underway. Brothers Jason and Scott Pruitt co-founded the establishment.
The Pruitt brothers started brewing around 2006. They started brewing beer in a garage, and after noticing an increasing number of nanobreweries opening, decided to open one of their own.
They were confident in choosing Helena as their location, as they wanted to bring something new to the area. When the opportunity arose to rent the historic building across from the Helena Caboose near the Helena Amphitheatre, they jumped on it.
They transformed the space and added

USA, VT: Simple Roots Brewing closing its taps for good
|
Burlington’s Simple Roots Brewing is closing its taps, and doors, MyChamplainValley.com reported on September 3.
The closure was announced on social media this week, with founders Dan Ukolowicz and Kara Pawlusiak writing that the decision “has not come easily.”
The company began in Ukolowicz and Pawlusiak’s garage in 2014, and eventually expanded to a tasting room at their current space in the New North End, on Burlington’s North Ave in 2016.
Still, Simple Roots Brewing is not closing their doors just yet. Normal hours will continue for now, and more definitive dates will be released in the future. In a joint statement from the pair online, they revealed plans for an event next month to “celebrate what we’ve built together” and thank patrons in person.
That special event will be held Saturday, October 11.
The duo also thanked their regulars, saying their “support and loyalty have meant the world to us. You’ve helped us build more than just a business — you helped create a space filled with connection, laughter, and shared memories.”

UK: Beer price hikes possible as warmest summer on record hit UK’s hop crop
|
Hop picking season has started at UK farms - amid fears the warmest summer on record has caused a national shortage and could lead to beer price surges, the Daily Mail reported on September 4.
Farmer and hop grower Tom Spilsbury says his yields are down by between 50 to 60 per cent at Orleton Court Farm, Worcestershire, following the dry summer months.
The local craft beer producer runs Spilsbury and Jones Brewing Company which makes speciality ales from the hops grown just metres away.
But he says the hot weather had led to yields of Challenger and Fuggles hops being down which had proved 'exceedingly challenging' to his business.
There are now fears of a UK-wide shortage.
Some major brewers have already increased their prices in response to rising taxes and wage costs which came into place in April.
Tom said: 'We're a working hop farm and small micro-brewery.
'2025 farming wise has been exceedingly challenging after this summer, which has been the hottest or driest on record.
'We had a very wet winter that doesn't do the roots any good at all, really damages the root system, that was really tough going.
'Then we went into one of the hottest summers on record. The hops struggled for

India: United Breweries aiming at 25-30% growth in premium segment every quarter
|
United Breweries Limited (UBL), the Bengaluru-headquartered beer maker, is looking to clock in 25-30 per cent growth in its premium segment every quarter, according to Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Vivek Gupta, Business Standard reported on September 5.
“Premiumisation is a key strategy for us. As we expand our offerings and portfolio, we are investing significantly in this segment…Naturally, there may be occasional challenges, as seen this quarter when prolonged heavy rains impacted the beer industry,” Gupta told Business Standard.
Moreover, while the Heineken subsidiary expects the beer industry to grow 6–7 per cent annually, it is aiming to outperform the market with double-digit volume growth each year. “To support this, we are expanding capacity to meet rising market demand,” Gupta said.
In the premium segment, the beer maker said it is sharpening its portfolio by focusing on select brands. While its mainstream labels — Kingfisher and Kingfisher Premium — remain core, the company is confident on its premium lineup with Ultra, Ultra Max, and international brands like Heineken and Amstel. At the same time, it continues to cater to the economy segment through brands such as Bullet, London Pilsner, and Kalyani Black Label, which are being scaled across

Brazil: Heineken tirples capacity of its Igarussu brewery
|
The Heineken Group inaugurated new production lines at its Igarassu brewery with a €200 million investment for its expansion, tripling the plant's production capacity, primarily for the production of the Amstel and Devassa brands, in addition to strengthening its commitment to sustainability in the production process, FreshlyBottled.com reported on September 2.
The Igarassu plant is strategic for supplying key markets in the Northeast, such as the states of Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Bahia, Alagoas, Paraíba, and Sergipe. The Heineken Group is present in more than 90 percent of the most important points of sale in Pernambuco, making the state the company's second-largest market in Northeast Brazil, with solid growth for brands such as Heineken and Amstel.
With this expansion, the brewery consolidates its position as the largest Amstel producer in the region, following the brand's double-digit growth in the first half of this year.
"Consolidating an investment of this magnitude not only strengthens the presence of our core portfolio in the region, but also reinforces our commitment to the sustainability agenda and local economic development," says Mauro Homem, Vice President of the Heineken Group.

Nigeria: International Breweries commits to increasing local input sourcing
|
International Breweries Plc (IBPLC), a proud part of AB InBev – the world’s largest brewer, has restated its commitment to increase the use of locally sourced raw materials in its production processes, Punch Newspapers reported on September 4.
This will help reduce the brewer’s FX exposure, positively impact the local economy, support farmers and suppliers and enhance the company’s sustainability efforts.
Carlos Coutiño, managing director of International Breweries Plc, who made this known at a recent symposium tagged ‘Cheers to Farmers,’ highlighted the crucial role farmers play in the brewing process and Nigeria’s economy.
“Our beer is only as good as the people who grow what we brew. At International Breweries, we believe in brewing a better world and that starts with our growers,” he said.
He noted that the event is about recognising farmers’ contribution and, more importantly, “it’s about strengthening a partnership that is building rural economies and transforming lives.”
Jumoke Oduwole, minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, in her goodwill message, commended IBPLC’s leadership in advancing Nigeria’s backward integration policy through increased local sourcing, agro-industrial partnerships, and MSME support.
Oduwole, who was represented by Samaila Dauda, from the federal ministry, said the event is “a powerful reminder of the crucial link between industry

Cyprus: Beer sales go flat in August
|
Beer sales in Cyprus went flat in August, with total deliveries down 5.1% compared to the same month last year, according to official data released on September 5.
The Statistical Service said deliveries from local breweries dropped to 4.5 million liters in August 2025, down from nearly 4.93 million liters a year earlier. Domestic consumption fell 7.2%, while exports slumped by a steep 35.9%.
Month to month, the picture wasn’t much brighter: compared with July, beer deliveries plunged 13.7%, a loss of more than 721,000 liters.
The numbers suggest that Cyprus’ beer market is cooling after the summer peak, with fewer pints poured both at home and abroad.

Brazil: Petrópolis Group promotes hop growing in Brazil
|
Brazil is not traditionally a hop-producing country, as the crop requires cooler climatic conditions like those in the United States and Germany, which together account for more than 70 percent of global production. Despite this, the Petrópolis Group decided to take the first step in Rio de Janeiro with the experimental planting of 400 seedlings of 10 different varieties to test their adaptability, FreshlyBottled.com reported on September 2.
The first harvests showed that some species thrived, and the technical team began selecting varieties with greater adaptability to Brazilian soil and climate.
The natural evolution of the project led to its expansion to Uberaba, Minas Gerais, in 2023, where 6,000 seedlings of the Comet and Cascade varieties were planted on two hectares. The company has cultivation areas in the regions of Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, and Uberaba. According to data from the Brazilian Association of Producers (Aprolúpulo), Minas Gerais has the largest cultivated area, while Rio de Janeiro was the state with the fastest growth.
