Brewery news UK: Diageo to cut around 60 jobs in Northern Ireland, outsource some positions to India
Drinks giant Diageo is shedding around 60 jobs in Northern Ireland across a number of functions, with some positions being outsourced to India, MSN reported on September 11.

The Irish News understands that the redundancies will come among customer service staff, and the credit team and trade terms.

Diageo, which owns world-famous brands including Guinness, Harp, Hop House 13, Rockshore, Smithwick’s, Baileys, Roe & Co, Smirnoff, Gordons and Tanqueray, currency employs around 300 people across three sites in Northern Ireland.

These include its beer packaging plant in east Belfast, corporate headquarters in Belfast city centre (which include its GB and Ireland customer service and credit teams), and the Baileys global supply facility at Mallusk, which produces and exports Baileys to over 150 markets worldwide.

A Diageo spokesperson said: “In order to support Diageo’s future growth ambition and to optimise our customer support processes, we propose to consolidate some commercial operations capabilities from Diageo Northern Ireland into our commercial experience centre of excellence in India.

“This proposed transition may impact a number of commercial operations roles at Diageo Northern Ireland, and we are committed to supporting our employees through a comprehensive consultation process and provide support during this transition period.”

Brewery news Thailand: Thai government lifts decades-old ban on afternoon alcohol sales
In a significant policy shift, the Thai government has officially lifted its decades-old ban on afternoon alcohol sales in restaurants, providing a major boost for the country’s beer, hospitality, and tourism industries, Asia Brewers Network reported on September 12.

The regulation, which had been in place for over 50 years, prohibited the sale of any alcohol product between 2pm and 5pm.

The decision has been widely praised by the food and beverage industry, including Thailand’s growing craft beer community. For breweries and distributors, this change unlocks a critical three-hour sales window, directly addressing a long-standing frustration for tourists and locals alike.

The Restaurant Business Association estimates that the move could increase sales by up to 25%. This is welcome news for the entire beer industry, as it translates directly into increased demand during a traditionally slow period of the day.

The previous ban was seen as an outdated rule that hindered the potential of Thailand’s vibrant hospitality scene. Removing it allows for a more consistent consumer experience and better reflects the social habits of international visitors, allowing for social afternoon consumption.

This policy change is a strong signal of a more favorable and modern business environment for the alcohol industry. It follows other recent progressive ...More info on site

Brewery news USA and Southeast Asia: Brewers Association promotes craft beer in Southeast Asia
The Brewers Association, which promotes US craft breweries, has outlined plans to “convert interest” in American craft beer in Southeast Asia into “sustainable growth”, The Drinks Business reported on September 11.

The Brewers Association, a not-for-profit trade group representing more than 9,000 breweries across the United States, has devised an Export Development Programme (EDP) to advance promotional activities in Southeast Asia.

The association recently appointed Beer Asia, a Singapore-based consulting firm that helps businesses enter and grow in the Asia-Pacific markets, to drive growth on the ground in markets its members are looking to target.

Following an initial shipment of member beers from the US, Beer Asia has worked to activate a series of events, focused at both trade and consumers, in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

The Brewers Association has said its activities in the region are still in the early stages. However, the group has reported strong engagement for hop-forward offerings and solid interest in lighter, fruit-forward and experimental styles among consumers in Southeast Asia.

Its next step will be to launch three activations in Kuala Lumpur in September, with the aim of introducing Malaysian buyers and consumers to beers brewed by its members. The association has said it wants to reinforce premium positioning, ...More info on site
