USA, MI: Bell’s Brewery investing $20M into facilities, beer garden
|
It’s been 40 years since Larry Bell founded Bell’s Brewery with a simple 15-gallon soup kettle in Kalamazoo, MLive.com reported on September 18.
Now, four years after Bell sold his namesake brewery to Lion, creating a craft partnership with New Belgium Brewing in the process, his beer and legacy is available in all 50 states.
Yet as Bell’s continues to grow and expand its footprint, the Kalamazoo company remains committed to its roots.
Exemplifying that, Bell’s officials this week announced a $20 million investment in the Kalamazoo community as the beer maker celebrates 40 years of business.
Of that, $18 million will be invested in the Comstock Township brewing facility over the next two years. Another $2 million will be put into improvements at the Eccentric Café and Beer Garden next year, said Chris Brimmage, director of Bell’s Brands.
The money going into the brewing facility will help expand operational capabilities, boost production capacity and position the brewery for long term success and continued innovation, said Michaela Eagan, Bell’s public relations manager.
The company plans to tackle a wide range of initiatives at the facility, including improving packaging efficiency and reducing the brewery’s carbon footprint.
Specific improvements at the café and in the Beer Garden were not

Canada, BC: Craft brewing industry calling on government for urgent reforms
|
Owning a brewery in British Columbia is becoming more expensive every year. As a result, over 20 local breweries in the province have had to shut their doors in the last year. Production costs have increased by 30 per cent since 2020, according to the B.C. Craft Brewers Guild, BCIT News reported on September 18.
“For over a year, B.C.’s craft brewing industry has been calling on government for urgent reforms to a tax structure that unfairly benefits foreign-owned mega brewers while leaving local craft brewers behind,” said B.C. Craft Brewers Guild Executive Director, Ken Beattie in a news release.
Later this month, the guild has a meeting with B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture and Food, Lana Popham to discuss change. It hopes to affect change for all 219 of its members.
According to the Guild, foreign-owned breweries get more than C$9 million in tax rebates every year while locally owned businesses see escalating tax rates the more they grow.
“Before we even sell things, we have to pay a tax to the government,” said Peter Adams, co-owner of White Rock Beach Beer Company.
The Guild says locally owned breweries are currently taxed on how much they produce while foreign owned establishments pay a flat fee

USA, WA: Outer Planet Brewing announces permanent closure on September 20
|
Seattle’s Outer Planet Brewing has announced its permanent closure is set for Saturday September 20, and will host a party for its final day of service, the company announced.
The decade-old brewing company previously announced in February that its lease would expire at the end of September, and spent six months searching for new ownership.
“It’s hardly viable to run a craft brewery when the costs are what they are on the Hill,” co-owner Gabriel Villenave told Capitol Hill Seattle Blog. “Smaller breweries closing, consolidation of larger breweries taking over.”
Villenave indicated that the company searched for other options that would avoid a complete closure; however, hopes to keep Outer Planet Brewing alive began to run dry.
“We were trying to pass the torch after 10 years, trying to put the word out and got it listed with a broker,” Villenave told Capitol Hill Seattle Blog. “We talked with potentially interested people. Ultimately, no one was serious. Honestly, we didn’t really know. We think there is definitely potential there to keep it going or take it to the next level.”
Outer Planet Brewing will sell off the last of its beer inventory before its closure on Saturday. The company’s machinery will also be sold and

USA, OH: Royal Docks Brewing Co. closing its remaining location
|
Royal Docks Brewing Co. is issuing a last call before closing its remaining location, Canton Repository reported on September 16.
"After over a decade of memories, milestones, pivots, and pints, our last day open to the public will be Sunday, September 21st," the company announced on Facebook. "We'll be open until 10:00 PM, and we’d love nothing more than to raise one last pint with you before we close the doors at this location."
The announcement comes a little more than a week after the brewery celebrated its 10th anniversary at its last spot — 5646 Wales Ave. NW in Jackson Township.
Owner John Bikis was not immediately available for comment. He and his wife, Adriana, along with "the entire RDBCo. family" signed the Facebook announcement.
The couple founded the brewery in 2015 along with brewmaster Dave Sutula, who is no longer with the company.
"We want to say thank you to every person who made Royal Docks what it became," the owners said on Facebook. "From our incredible staff (past and present), friends, regulars, vendors, musicians, acts, food trucks, and local officials who helped bring our events to life… to everyone who believed in us, supported us, and walked through our doors — whether

South Korea: HiteJinro tops list of customer satisfaction with local beer producers
|
The South Korean Chosun Ilbo newspaper survey of customer satisfaction with local beer producers places HiteJinro top of the list; followed closed by OB Brewery and Lotte Chilsung Beverage in joint second place, Asia Brewers Network reported on September 19.
In this year’s National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) survey of South Korea’s beer manufacturing industry, HiteJinro Co. emerged in first place with a score of 75 points, narrowly edging out OB Brewery and Lotte Chilsung Beverage, which both tied for second with 74 points. Commissioned by leading daily newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, the NCSI survey targeted consumers who had consumed the same beer brand at least twice within the previous month, asking them to rate their satisfaction.
HiteJinro’s victory reflects its strategic efforts to broaden its appeal through innovation and targeted marketing. The company has been promoting Terra and Kelly as its flagship brands. Terra, already gaining popularity, launched Terra Light, a variant free of sugars and sweeteners, in line with growing demand for healthier products. To mark the sixth anniversary of Terra this year, HiteJinro refreshed its packaging and rolled out the “Terra Jump Up 2025!” campaign to reinforce its image as a trendsetter.
Kelly, introduced two years ago, has been particularly effective

India: Goa-based Reybier making a bold move into India’s mainstream beer market
|
Goa-based Reybier is making a bold move into India’s mainstream beer market with the launch of Thala, a new brand being introduced as India’s first corn-based beer. The heritage brew uses local ingredients and hopes to invigorate the country’s indigenous brewing traditions, Asian Brewers Network reported on September 18.
Thala is positioned by the brewery as a commercial, heritage beer. It is designed for mass appeal while being deeply rooted in India’s storied brewing history.
Reybier is launching Thala with two distinct variants designed to appeal to a wide spectrum of beer consumers in India:
Thala 888: A super strong traditional beer described as full-bodied and intense, aimed at the large and popular strong beer segment in India.
Thala 555: A mild lager that is positioned as smooth and refreshing, specifically crafted to complement the bold flavors of Indian cuisine.
With this launch, Reybier is hoping to carve out a new space in the market for a commercial-scale heritage beer. By combining a compelling story with an accessible product. Company founder Rasagna Rao Dharmana, the first woman to lead an Indian commercial brewery, notes, “Thala is not a craft beer—it’s something deeper. It’s a revival of India’s forgotten beer traditions, made with corn that Indian
