Brewery news Brazil: Heineken expected to resume dispute with Ambev at antitrust watchdog
Heineken is expected to ask in the coming weeks that Brazil’s antitrust watchdog CADE reopen an investigation into Ambev for allegedly failing to comply with the agreement signed in 2023 that set limits on exclusivity contracts with bars and restaurants, sources told Valor.

The two companies are fierce competitors in the beer market, and the rivalry has intensified this year, with Ambev’s management under pressure after a sharp drop in sales volume in the second quarter.

According to sources, Heineken hired independent consulting firms to verify whether the rules of the agreement were being violated. Field research was conducted in mid-2023 in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, with results submitted to the CADE earlier this year. Now the group is moving forward with a new survey in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília, which is expected to be delivered to the regulator by the end of this month.

People familiar with the matter said Heineken identified areas where Ambev allegedly exceeded the limits allowed under the agreement. The focus is on busy neighborhoods in São Paulo, such as Vila Olímpia and Pinheiros, as well as Rio’s South Zone.

The investigation against Ambev at the CADE was launched in March 2022 following a ...More info on site

Brewery news Central America: FIFCO shareholders approve offload of beverage and retail operations to Heineken
The shareholders of FIFCO have authorised the offload of its beverage and retail operations in Central America to Heineken, Global Drinks Intel reported on October 8.

The US$3.2bn deal, which covers FIFCO’s assets in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Mexico, was announced last month. The completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to occur in the first half of 2026.

Building on a partnership between the two companies dating back to 1986, FIFCO will sell its 75% stake in Costa Rica’s Distribuidora La Florida — which runs beverage operations and around 300 retail outlets — as well as its 75% share in Nicaragua Brewing Holding (owner of 49.85% of Compañía Cervecera de Nicaragua) and its 25% interest in Heineken Panama. Heineken will also acquire FIFCO’s “beyond beer” business in Mexico and its operations in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

Following completion, Heineken and its affiliates will own 100% of Distribuidora La Florida, Heineken Panama and FIFCO Mexico, and 49.85% of Compañía Cervecera de Nicaragua. FIFCO said it is exploring “strategic alternatives” for its US unit.

Last month, Heineken began the search for a new regional lead in the Americas as Marc Busain prepared his departure ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Brewing industry calling on government to maintain current excise duty rates
Malaysia’s brewing industry is calling on the government to maintain the current excise duty rates on beer, stressing its significant contribution to the economy and warning against the risks of fuelling illicit trade should tax rates rise, The Malaysian Reserve reported on October 8.

The Confederation of Malaysian Brewers Bhd (CMBB) comprising Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and Heineken Malaysia Bhd had last week released the Economic Impact Assessment of the Brewing Industry in Malaysia.

The independent study, conducted by the South-East Asia Public Policy Institute in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia, highlighted the sector’s role in GDP, job creation and tax revenue.

Between 2022 and 2023, CMBB contributed an average RM7.1 billion annually to economic growth, supported 52,400 jobs, and generated RM3.3 billion in annual tax revenue.

The brewing industry accounts for 0.4% of Malaysia’s GDP and 1.5% of the nation’s total tax revenue, underscoring its strong multiplier effect across manufacturing, logistics, retail and hospitality.

“Brewers are significant contributors to Malaysia’s economy — not only through taxes but also by driving employment and industrial activity across manufacturing, logistics, retail and hospitality sectors,” said Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia MD Stefano Clini and Heineken Malaysia MD Martijn van Keulen, in a joint statement ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Asahi partially restarts production after cyber-attack last week
Asahi has partially restarted production at all six of its breweries in Japan after it was forced to close them due to a cyber-attack, the BBC reported on October 6.

Several major shops in Japan including 7-Eleven and FamilyMart had warned last week that they were running low on stocks of the beer after the hack affected Asahi Group's ordering and delivery systems in the country.

Asahi is the biggest brewer in Japan, but it also makes soft drinks and food products, as well as supplying own-brand goods to other retailers.

The partially restarted breweries produce best-seller Asahi Super Dry, but the firm is also restarting plants that produce food and soft drinks.

The cyber-attack is the latest to have affected operations at major firms, with carmaker Jaguar Land Rover still struggling to recover from an attack that shut down production.

Asahi Group also owns Fullers in the UK and global brands including Peroni, Pilsner Urquell and Grolsch. However, only Asahi's operations in Japan - which account for about half its sales - have been affected by the attack.

Asahi said the re-opened beer plants in Japan were "not yet fully operational", and that two of its soft drinks factories that have partially re-opened were also ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Craft beer maker Bira in talks to raise around $132 million in its largest-ever funding round
Indian beer maker Bira is reportedly in advanced talks to raise around $132 million in its largest-ever funding round, with New York-based Global Emerging Markets (GEM) among the potential investors, Menafn.com reported on October 8.

The proposed deal includes $50 million in equity and $82 million in structured credit, though the size of GEM's stake has not been disclosed, according to a report by Reuters.

Bira CEO Ankur Jain confirmed receiving term sheets for substantial investments through both debt and equity, but declined to reveal investor details, the report added.

The funds are expected to be used for working capital requirements, settling pending dues, and supporting business recovery and supply chain restructuring.

Founded in 2015, Bira rapidly emerged as one of India's fastest-growing beer brands, fueled by the country's evolving social drinking culture. Despite its less than 5% market share, the brand carved out a niche in a market dominated by global players such as AB InBev, Carlsberg, and Heineken.

However, regulatory hurdles have posed challenges, particularly in 2023 - 24, when a name change from B9 Beverages Pvt. Ltd. to B9 Beverages Ltd. caused significant disruptions, leading to losses of about ₹80 crore.

Bira has raised $210 million to date and was last valued at ...More info on site
