USA & Canada: Molson Coors to cut about 400 jobs in the Americas
|
Beer maker Molson Coors Beverage Company said on October 20 it would cut about 400 jobs, or nine per cent of its salaried workforce in the Americas by year end as part of a corporate restructuring plan.
The company's Americas workforce consists of employees in the U.S., Canada and certain countries in Latin America.
A spokesperson for the company told CBC News in an email that the restructuring "only applies to salaried non-union employees across the Americas."
The company is not providing a breakdown by country or province at this stage, and no offices or breweries will shut down as part of the restructuring, the spokesperson added.
The move comes as U.S. alcohol companies are grappling with uncertainties driven by cautious consumer spending amid inflation and tariff-driven volatilities.
With the restructuring, Molson Coors said it aims to reinvest in its core categories of beers, non-alcohol beverages and energy drinks. It expects to incur charges of $35 million to $50 million US in the fourth quarter.
The company, which produces beer locally at breweries in Canada and the U.S. and through house brands such as Coors, Molson and Miller, had a total of 16,800 employees globally as of December 2024, according to its annual report.

Mexico: Congress approves tax hike on sodas, beer, cigarettes, energy drinks, violent video games and online gaming
|
Many Mexican congressional representatives drank sodas and energy drinks while voting to increase taxes on these drinks and other products such as cigarettes, beer, online gaming and violent video games, WWLP reported on October 17.
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the higher taxes will help decrease the rates of obesity and diabetes in her country by discouraging the consumption of sugar-laden drinks.
The new tax on beverages will go up on average from about 1.64 pesos to 3.08 per liter.
A late lobbying push by soda manufactures cut the tax on sugar-free and diet drinks to 1.5 pesos per liter.
Sheinbaum and proponents have said it was also time to also revamp the Products and Services tax code.
There was heavy congressional opposition to the increase, some deputies saying the move will ‘only hurt mom-and-pop stores that will see fewer sales.’
“Today they raise the taxes for products we all consume daily like sodas, beer, cigarettes, energy drinks, and as a result, you pay more and the government will spend more,” said Mario Zamora, a PRI party representative.
“We don’t agree with this deal to create more taxes, we want fiscal justice, we should be charging the big manufacturers and not the people on the street,”

USA, SC: Voodoo Brewing Co. to open a location in Lexington next month
|
A brewery already familiar with South Carolina is set to bring its drinks to the Midlands next month.
Voodoo Brewing Co. announced on October 17 that it will open a location in Lexington on Nov. 7. The brewery will be located at 102 W. Main Street. It’ll also be owned and operated by retired U.S. military veteran Dawu Bowman, according to the announcement.
“Lexington deserves a spot that feels like home — where families can share a meal, friends can watch the game, and everyone can raise a glass to what makes this town special,” Bowman said in a statement.
The location is described as aiming to have “elevated pub food, live entertainment, and Gamecock football.” It’ll also host weekly events like trivia, karakoe and live music.
Voodoo Brewing Co. is a franchise based in Pennsylvania that also has South Carolina locations in Myrtle Beach and Fountain Inn.

Canada, SK: Great Western Brewing Company announces C$25-million expansion at its Saskatoon brewery
|
Great Western Brewing Company is turning 35, and it's celebrating with a C$25-million expansion at its brewery site in Saskatoon, CBC reported on October 16.
Its current brewery, purchased from Molson in 1990, was built back in 1927, and the equipment in use was installed in 1954.
Now, Great Western is updating it and expanding, with the addition of 11,000 square feet and an entirely new brewing system.
Greg Kitz, one of the original 16 founding employees, recalled the first day their products hit the shelf.
“We went like gangbusters, it was amazing,” Kitz told host Stephanie Masicotte on CBC Radio's Saskatoon Morning. “We sat outside liquor stores just watching. ‘They're actually taking our beer, the stuff we made.’ There were of course some rough times farther down the road. The initial push died off and we managed to struggle through.”
The new brewhouse, located at the longstanding brewery site on Second Avenue North in Saskatoon, is expected to be fully operational by early 2026. The expansion will increase brewing capacity to 55 million litres per year.
Great Western’s president and CEO Michael Brennan said that the new equipment is coming from a German company with a reputation for precision.

Canada, ON: Diageo confirms no buyer found yet for Crown Royal facility in Ontario
|
Diageo has confirmed it has not yet been approached by a suitable buyer that could continue operations at its Crown Royal facility in Ontario, Yahoo! Finance reported on October 20.
The Tanqueray gin producer announced in August that it plans to sell the plant in Amherstburg. It intends to cease operations there by February and has since entered talks with the Unifor trade union.
In a statement, a Diageo spokesperson said: “Our current focus is on engaging with the union and supporting our employees, and so we do not plan to list the property until after we have concluded negotiations with Unifor.
"However, if prior to that there were to be a potential purchaser with a credible plan to continue operating the facility as a going concern who committed upfront to retain unionised jobs, we would certainly engage in discussions.
"We have not yet been approached by any such party.”
In an interview last week with local outlet CTV News, Amherstburg mayor Michael Prue said an unidentified alcoholic drinks business had been in talks with town authorities around the takeover of the Diageo plant.

USA, CA: Two Pitchers Brewing Co. getting ready to open a new San Francisco location
|
Two Pitchers Brewing Co., an Oakland-based craft brewery specializing in radlers, is getting ready to open in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset neighborhood at 3821 Noriega Street, WhatNow reported on October 20.
The company’s second location is set to move into the former home of Noriega Produce, which recently relocated one block away and rebranded as Gus’s Community Market, according to the San Francisco Standard. While an exact opening date has not been announced, co-owner Wilson Barr tells What Now San Francisco that the new Two Pitchers location is currently under construction and slated for an early 2026 debut. The beer garden will offer a rotating tap list, a laid-back environment, and a food menu built around smashburgers from local pop-up Maillard’s.
Founded by former college baseball teammates Barr and Tommy Hester, Two Pitchers Brewing Co. has built its identity around popularizing the radler, a low-alcohol blend of beer and juice or soda. Since launching in Oakland, the brand has expanded its distribution footprint while maintaining a focus on playful, approachable craft beer. The Outer Sunset opening marks their first expansion into San Francisco and reflects the company’s interest in connecting with beachgoers, cyclists, and runners near Sunset Dunes park.

USA, LA: Bayou Sara Brewing Co. coming to Sain Francisville this month

When it opens in October in Saint Francisville, Bayou Sara Brewing Co. will be dedicated to being family friendly and a community hub. In addition to craft beer, the microbrewery and restaurant will have a full bar, pub food menu, games, and occasional live music, WhatNow reported on October 20.
The brewery at 11943 Ferdinand St. will also It mark a major milestone for co-owner and head brewer Steve McKinney. He recently told What Now New Orleans that he started brewing in 1995, while stationed at an army base in Japan.
“I was complaining to my mother about how much beer cost,” he said. “She heard from a neighbor that there was some home brew place down on Magazine Street. So, she went there, bought me a home brew kit, and shipped it to Japan.”
After taking a long break, McKinney began brewing again in earnest about a decade ago. Over the years, he has built up a catalog of mostly classic beer recipes, and a few newer styles.
McKinney said that Bayou Sara will feature a variety of styles that will appeal to a wide range of craft beer drinkers. There will also be a full bar for those who want cocktails

World: Kirin Brewery prioritises three brands to help reach its global goals

Japan’s Kirin Brewery has prioritised three brands across the beer, ready-to-drink and whisky categories to help it reach its global goals, The Drinks Business reported on October 21.
The drinks giant named its Kirin Ichiban beer brand, its ready-to-drink brand Hyoketsu, and Fuji Japanese Whisky, as its “three flagship pillars” which will help by “accelerating cross-market links to innovation originating in Japan, particularly across Asia Pacific”.
The move follows Kirin having recently announced a strengthened overseas growth strategy that positions the company to reach a 20% global revenue target by 2035, building on its presence in more than 40 markets.
At the forefront of this plan is the establishment of Kirin Brewery Southeast Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which opened in 1 October as its Southeast Asia`s regional headquarter.
According to Kirin, the new regional office will enable faster, locally-insighted decisions across Southeast Asia and supports the company’s aim to build upon its portfolio of alcoholic beverages.
Kirin Brewery president and CEO, Hideki Horiguchi, outlined the company’s long-term ambition to lift the overseas share of Kirin Brewery revenue to 20% by 2035 (excluding liquor tax).

Germany: Kulmbacher Group’s Scherdel brewery to cease operations by end of 2026

The Hof-based Scherdel brewery will cease operations at the end of next year. The Kulmbacher Group, the owner, cites economic reasons, DieSachsen.de reported on October 17.
In Hof, the owner is closing the traditional Scherdel brewery at the end of next year. The Kulmbach Group announced that it was no longer possible to operate the brewery profitably. "Together with the Hof employees, we have fought intensively for years to preserve the brewery in Hof," said CEO Jörg Lehmann.
In recent years, however, the situation at the site has come to a head. The Hof brewery has had to accept a sharp drop in sales: The sales volume of Scherdel beers has halved over the past two decades. Kulmbacher had taken over Scherdel in 2003 following the insolvency of Scherdel Privatbrauerei.
Now it is time to act, Lehmann continued - in view of increased prices for raw materials, energy and personnel as well as upcoming investments: "We have examined various options for the location. However, economic operation in Hof is no longer possible."

UK: Whisky producer Whyte & Mackay reports fall in 2024 profits
|
Whisky producer Whyte & Mackay has reported a fall in profits, with the export of single malt whisky “significantly down”, the Press and Journal reported on October 20.
Newly filed accounts for the firm show revenue fell to £349.2 million last year, down from £370m in 2023. Pre-tax profit slipped by more than £8m to £88.3m.
The group runs five north and north-east distilleries and employs over 600 workers across Scotland, including at Dalmore and Invergordon grain distillery.
It produces famous brands including Dalmore, Tamnavulin, Jura, Fettercairn, and blended whiskies under the Whyte & Mackay label.
A company spokesperson said: “After a period of sustained growth, Whyte & Mackay’s profit decreased in 2024 as a result of the challenging economic environment which led to a slowdown in the whisky category and in spirits and luxury goods more generally around the world.
“Across the industry, single malt Scotch whisky exports were significantly down on 2023.”
Despite the global downturn, Whyte & Mackay doubled capital spending to £51.2m during the year.
The investment funded upgrades at Dalmore, Jura, Invergordon, and Grangemouth bottling plant.
The Dalmore distillery in Alness remains closed to visitors while a major expansion and redevelopment project is underway.

Japan: Brewing giants halt gift beer sales after Asahi cyber-attack
|
Brewing giants in Japan have partially halted the sale of beer sets for end-of-year gifts after receiving a flood of orders following a cyber-attack on rival Asahi, The Drinks Business reported on October 20.
Japanese brewers Suntory Holdings and Sapporo Breweries have announced the partial halt to sales of gift packs of beer after being inundated with orders.
Both companies announced on October 17 that they would prioritise the supply of regular products over seasonal items in the run up to the winter festivities.
The announcements come as fellow big-name brewer Asahi continues to suffer the fallout of a cyber-attack.
Asahi announced that it had been impacted by a cyber hack in late September.
Last week, the brewer revealed there was “a possibility” that personal information could have been compromised as a result of the breach.
The news came after weeks of reiteration by Asahi that customer and employee information was safe.
Shipments have also been delayed and stocks of Asahi’s beers in Japan have been at risk of shortage as the company deals with the impact of the attack.
As a result of the impact on availability, consumers in Japan have turned to other brewers to buy products.

Laos: Lao Brewery remains bullish despite currency tumble and slowing growth
|
In one of Asia’s poorest and smallest economies, beer is big business.
Lao Brewery, the producer of the ubiquitous Beerlao, remains bullish even as the Laotian currency tumbles and growth slows in a nation of just 7.8 million, where nearly everyone owns a home, disposable income is rising, and young people abound.
Backed primarily by Denmark’s Carlsberg Group, the company’s annual production capacity for beer, soft drinks and bottled water has expanded to 800 million litres today, from 20 million litres two decades ago.
Henrik Andersen, managing director of Lao Brewery Company, told The Business Times in an interview: “Laos is in our top five (globally) – top line and bottom line. It is our second-biggest business in Asia, only after China.”
He added: “We are selling more than 100 litres of beverages to each Laotian a year. There is no other country, to my knowledge, that meets that.”
The company’s growth has been steady since Carlsberg took a 50 per cent stake in it in 2005, with the remaining half then held by Laos’ finance ministry.

Germany: Budweiser beer to restart sales in Germany as Anheuser-Busch Bud
|
Decades after a legal dispute over the beer brands Bud and Bit, the world's largest brewing group, AB InBev, is bringing its lager beer back to the German market under the name Anheuser-Busch Bud, Yahoo! Finance reported.
The launch will begin with a supermarket chain, the German subsidiary of the brewer said on October 22. Additional retailers and bars are expected to follow in 2026.
Anheuser-Busch Bud will be brewed within the European Union, the company said. After the Belgian group InBev acquired Anheuser-Busch in 2008, the lager beer was no longer sold in Germany’s pilsner-dominated beer market.
AB InBev sees growing demand for international lagers in Germany and aims to capitalize on this trend with the reintroduction of its globally known beer. The move reaffirms the company's commitment to the highly competitive German beer market, it said.
German-born brewers Eberhard Anheuser and Adolphus Busch began brewing their lager beer in the United States in 1876.
The return to Germany of the beer, which by company estimates is now sold in more than 80 countries worldwide, follows numerous trademark disputes.
