USA: Heineken currently absorbing impact of US tariff on its European-made beers, CEO says
|
Heineken is currently absorbing the impact of a 15% U.S. tariff on its European-made beers as the company cannot raise prices above local competition, CEO Dolf van den Brink said on October 23.
The Dutch brewing giant’s U.S. profitability is suffering due to these tariffs, with the company unable to pass on the additional costs to consumers without losing competitive positioning against domestic beer producers.
Van den Brink indicated that any potential shift in production to mitigate the impact of these tariffs would not happen in the immediate future, suggesting the company will continue to bear these costs in the short term.
The CEO also revealed that Heineken may close additional breweries across Europe while simultaneously investing in others as part of its operational strategy.
When discussing the company’s brand portfolio, van den Brink stated that Heineken is unlikely to sell any brands outright, though some may be allowed to "fizzle out" naturally over time.

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries posts 48% growth in nine-month group revenue
|
Nigerian Breweries Plc has posted a group revenue of N1.04 trillion for the nine-month period ended September 30, 2025, representing a 48% growth over the N703 billion recorded in the corresponding period in 2024, The Cable reported on October 23.
According to the unaudited results released on NGX portal, the Cost of Sales rose from N495 billion in 2024 to N627 billion in the period under review, while Marketing, Distribution, and Administration expenses went up by 38% from N184 billion in 2024 to N254 billion in 2025 driven by increased brand and sales activities.
The Company Secretary/Legal Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Uaboi Agbebaku, disclosed in a statement that the Company was still able to deliver strong growth in the topline and in the operations during the period under review despite a high double-digit inflation rate which continues to constrain consumer spending and high input costs.
Agbebaku explained that the Company was also able to consolidate its market leadership, which was primarily influenced by premiumisation, increased competitiveness, and enhanced route-to-market.
“The Group’s revenue grew by 47%, supported by appropriate pricing and the strong performance of the premium portfolio. Operating profit improved significantly supported by cost management and supply chain efficiencies, while the net profit increased

Africa: India’s Varun Beverages signs exclusive distribution agreement with Carlsberg for select African markets
|
Varun Beverages Limited (VBL), a key bottling partner of PepsiCo, on October 29 announced a major expansion plan that includes entering the alcoholic beverage segment in Africa and establishing new operations in Kenya.
VBL has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with Carlsberg Breweries A/S for select African markets. Through this deal, certain African subsidiaries of VBL will test-market Carlsberg beer across their territories.
The company said this step aligns with the growing demand for Ready-to-Drink (RTD) and other alcoholic beverages across global markets. It sees this partnership as a key opportunity to diversify its portfolio beyond soft drinks, adding beer, wine, whisky, rum, vodka, and other alcoholic beverages both in India and abroad.
As part of its global expansion strategy, VBL is incorporating a wholly-owned subsidiary in Kenya. The unit will handle the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of beverages in the region. This move marks VBL’s continued focus on strengthening its presence in African markets, where it already operates in countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Morocco.
VBL has also announced the formation of a new joint venture in India, White Peak Refrigeration Private Limited, in partnership with Everest International Holdings Limited. The JV will manufacture visi-coolers and other refrigeration equipment, supporting the company’s growing

Thailand: Excise Dept instructed to ease rules on canned beer
|
Thailand’s cabinet spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat says that the Excise Department has been instructed to amend rules on canning beer that restrict entry for small craft brewers, Asia Brewers Network reported on October 24.
Thailand’s Cabinet has taken a significant step towards opening up the nation’s craft beer sector by formally instructing the Excise Department to amend regulations that currently favour large producers and effectively block small-scale craft brewers from entering the canned-beer market.
According to Cabinet spokesman and deputy leader of the Bhumjaithai party, Siripong Angkasakulkiat, the directive was issued at the Cabinet’s weekly meeting on 21 October 2025 following a briefing from the Ombudsman’s Office, which concluded that the department’s existing rules may conflict with the newly enacted Excise Act (No. 2), B.E. 2568, also known as the Community Liquor Act, designed to support more local alcohol production.
Under the current regulatory framework, small brewers seeking to can or bottle beer face substantial hurdles. These include requirements for high production capacity, the use of high-power machinery, rigorous environmental impact assessments, and other specifications that favour established players. Siripong noted that such demands have effectively excluded ordinary local entrepreneurs from entering the canned-beer segment.
To address the imbalance, the Cabinet has directed the Excise

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries completes integration of Distell Nigeria into its operations
|
The Nigerian Breweries Plc (NB) has completed 100 per cent integration of Distell Nigeria into its operations, This Day reported on October 26.
The integration followed the full acquisition of the company by NB in March 2025.
The Corporate Affairs Director of NB, Mr. Uzodinma Odenigbo, disclosed this to journalists recently in Lagos.
Odenigbo revealed that NB has completed the installation of a state-of-the-art manufacturing line for Distell brands at its Ibadan brewery and has since commenced the manufacturing of Distell wines and spirit brands, including Chamdor, 4th Street.
He said, “I am pleased to announce that we have now completed the full integration of Distell Nigeria, and we have now installed a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in our Ibadan Brewery for the production of the Distell Wines and Spirit Brands.”
He explained that the full integration is in line with NB’s ambition to become a ‘Total Beverage Company’, which goes beyond beer.
Odenigbo added that the full integration has now expanded NB’s brand portfolio to include wine, spirits, and ready-to-drink (RTD) brands.
He recounted that NB commenced the acquisition of Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria in June 2024, initially acquiring an 80 per cent majority stake after obtaining statutory approval from the South African Reserve Bank
