Brewery news China: Chongqing Beer reports nearly flat revenues in Q3
Amid weak consumer spending, China’s Chongqing Beer reported nearly flat revenue in Q3, while net profit declined by approximately 13% year-on-year, showing a trend of worsening performance quarter by quarter. The extent of the Q3 decline also exceeded the expectations of some brokerages, Futubull reported on October 30.

In the first three quarters, the company achieved revenue of RMB 13.059 billion, representing a slight decrease of 0.03% year-on-year. Net profit attributable to shareholders reached RMB 1.241 billion, down 6.83% year-on-year, while non-GAAP net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 1.222 billion, a decrease of 6.4%. In terms of sales volume, the company sold 26.681 million kiloliters of beer in the first three quarters, up 0.42% year-on-year, underperforming the overall industry growth rate.

Regarding the decline in performance, Chongqing Beer stated that it was mainly due to the consumer market still being in a recovery phase, intensified market competition, and the impact of fluctuating costs for raw materials, packaging materials, and energy, all of which pressured profitability.

On a quarterly basis, in Q3 this year, the company generated revenue of RMB 4.22 billion, an increase of 0.41% year-on-year; net profit attributable to shareholders was RMB 376 million, down 12.71% year-on-year and approximately 4% lower ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Brewers bracing for temporary slowdown due to proposed excise duty hike
Malaysia's brewers are bracing for a temporary slowdown following the proposed 10 per cent excise duty hike in 2026 Budget, but analysts believe the sector's rebound could come sooner than expected, supported by strong global catalysts and attractive valuations, The Straits Times reported on October 30.

Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB Research) said the proposed adjustment – the first since 2016 – raises beer excise duties to RM192.50 per litre of alcohol from RM175, translating to a 5.8 to 6 per cent rise in brewers' cost base.

Given that taxes make up around 60 per cent of production costs, brewers are expected to fully pass the increase to consumers through roughly 6 per cent higher average selling prices (ASP).

"We expect this impact to be temporary, with sales likely to rebound as consumers adapt to higher prices, reinforced by beer's positioning as the most affordable alcoholic beverage," said HLIB Research in a note.

"A similar trend was observed after the 2016 excise duty hike, when volumes recovered after two quarters and subsequently supported multi-year growth."

HLIB Research estimates a short-term 5.5 per cent to 5.7 per cent dip in the financial year 2026 (FY2026) volumes due to the price adjustment before demand stabilises.

Brewery news Austria: Stiegl Brewery admits difficult financial situation
Herbert Bauer, who took over as managing director of Stiegl Brewery in Salzburg in April after joining from Coca-Cola HBC, has announced a comprehensive restructuring program and hinted at possible job cuts. Speaking to ORF and other media, Bauer admitted that Austria’s largest privately owned brewery is in a difficult financial situation, Inside.Beer reported on October 23.

The brewery, producing nearly 1 million hl annually, has now recorded its third consecutive year of losses, –1.4 million EUR in 2022, –5 million EUR in 2023 and –5.3 million EUR in 2024, despite increasing its turnover from 88.1 million EUR (2023) to 95.4 million EUR (2024). According to ORF, the company accumulated more than 9 million EUR in losses over the past two years alone.

Bauer attributed the ongoing decline mainly to a shift in sales channels: most beer is now sold through retail outlets, where intense price pressure from supermarket chains prevents the same profitability as in gastronomy. The on-trade business, already hit hard by the pandemic, has not yet recovered. Additionally, stagnating demand and overcapacity continue to burden the Austrian beer market.

While the company currently covers losses with reserves from earlier profitable years, Bauer emphasized that Stiegl must adapt structurally. “There will ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Eichbaum Brewery enters planned insolvency
Mannheim’s Eichbaum Brewery, one of Germany’s largest beer exporters, has entered planned insolvency. The news comes just days after the sale of its iconic malt beverage brand Karamalz, which had already been seen as a last-minute lifeline. According to several sources, the insolvency filing has been submitted and is currently under court review, Inside.Beer reported on October 29.

The development became public during a turbulent staff meeting on October 28, where participants described the atmosphere as “highly charged.” Neither owner Andreas HibyDurst nor technical managing director Markus Lopsien attended the meeting, which further strained the mood among the roughly 280 employees present. The absence of leadership fueled speculation about internal disagreements between management, the works council, and the workforce.

Reports from Mannheimer Morgen indicate previous confusion surrounding a location and employment guarantee until 2030 for up to 300 employees—a document allegedly signed by staff representatives but not by company executives.

The Food, Beverages and Catering Union (NGG) expressed continued support for the site, emphasizing its confidence in the workforce’s commitment. “We expect full transparency and constructive cooperation from the management,” the union stated. “Unilateral decisions at the expense of employees will not be accepted.”

The brewery, which once exported to Russia and drew ...More info on site

Barley news South Africa: African breweries tap into local barley
Agribusiness and agro-processing are increasingly being recognised as critical drivers of Africa’s economic future, with private-sector investment and government partnerships creating new opportunities for growth, trade and employment, says local beermaker South African Breweries (SAB), Engineering News reported on October 31.

The company notes that, the local beer industry contributes more than R2.2-billion to agricultural GDP and supports about 38 000 jobs in farming, while also supplying raw materials to breweries across the continent under the AB InBev group.

At the Cheers to Farmers event in Taung, in the North West province, last month, SAB highlighted how investment in small-scale farmers was reshaping both local economies and Africa’s wider brewing value chain.

Farmers in Taung delivered 17 400 t of malting barley this year, all procured by SAB, with some destined for local breweries and some, once malted, supplied to sister companies including Zambian Breweries, International Breweries in Nigeria and Kalahari Breweries in Namibia.

The company demonstrated how, in this way, local supply chains are feeding into continental markets, a development that is expected to grow under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

The Taung project is a tangible example of how partnerships between government, farmers and business can translate into long-term value, said North ...More info on site
