Brewery news USA: Michelob Ultra and Modelo Especial competing to be America's top-selling beer
Michelob Ultra and Modelo Especial are battling it out to be America's top-selling beer, Yahoo! Finance reported on October 31.

Modelo Especial has been the top-selling beer since it took the top spot from Bud Light in 2023. However, Michelob Ultra, launched in 2002, has taken the lead, based on volume sold, so far this year, parent company AB InBev said Thursday, Oct. 27.

Michelob Ultra is the top seller, based on volume, at bars and restaurants, and in retail stores such as supermarkets, drug stores and convenience stores, based on retail sales data over the last 52 weeks, the company said in a news release.

But Modelo Especial remains the top-selling beer by dollars spent, accounting for a 10% share of all beer sales, according to Constellation Brands, which distributes the beer in the U.S. market. Constellation distributes Modelo and Corona beers in the U.S., while AB InBev controls them in all other markets.

Who's right? That depends on how you look at it, says Dave Williams, president of Bump Williams Consulting of Shelton, Connecticut, which services the alcoholic beverage industry.

While Modelo Especial remains the No. 1 beer in terms of dollar sales, "Ultra has maintained an upward trajectory" as overall beer sales ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: New Glarus Brewing on track to complete new facility by fall 2026
In October 2024, New Glarus Brewing broke ground on its 65,000 square-foot expansion of its Hilltop building, 2400 State Highway 69, New Glarus, including its brew hall, parking lot, new Sugar River Distillery and hospitality facilities, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on November 3.

One year later, the $55 million construction project, led by Wisconsin-based Keller Construction, is on budget and on track to be completed by the fall of 2026. Allotting time to move in and hire new employees, the new facilities are scheduled to open to the public in early summer of 2027.

“We started construction with our retail space, built into the hillside at the lowest level, and simultaneously started our Brew Hall addition at the top,” Katherine May, the project’s lead architect and construction manager, said in an email. “We change elevation about 60 feet as the design marches up the hill in a line, connecting the flat area at the bottom of the hill to our existing facility at the top of the hill. And we recently celebrated the milestone of these two building ends finally connecting.”

The Brew Hall is where New Glarus keeps its eight massive copper kettles, which came from Germany. During the construction ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery sells 2.4% more beer by volume in FY 2025
Coopers Brewery has bucked national market trends in the recently completed financial year 2025, selling 2.4 per cent more beer by volume while the category contracted by 0.9 per cent. This is off the back of already strong 1.5 per cent growth in the prior fiscal year, the Drinks Trade reported on October 31.

Largely driven by Dry 3.5 and Australian Lager, and spread across a 5.9 per cent increase in keg sales and a 1.8 per cent in packaged beer sales, Australia’s Most Reputable Craft Beer producer sold almost two million litres extra, bringing the annual total to 80.6 million litres.

This includes growth across all states and territories, with its home state South Australia, up 2.3 per cent, remaining the largest market in terms of sales volume while Queensland recorded the strongest growth, up 4.8 per cent year on year.

Following this, Victoria/Tasmania grew 3.3 per cent, Northern Territory 2 per cent, New South Wales 1.9 per cent, and Western Australia 0.8 per cent.

Coopers Brewery Managing Director Michael Shearer said the result shines a light on a solid performance across the breadth of Coopers’ portfolio.

“Demand was particularly strong for Dry 3.5 and Australian Lager, both relative newcomers to our portfolio. Our ...More info on site

Brewery news Panama: Cervecería Nacional announces resizing of operations in Panama
Amid a sharp drop in sales and increased taxes on the sector, Cervecería Nacional announced a resizing of its operations in Panama, which includes the dismissal of some of its staff, Newsroom Panama reported on November 1.

The company explained that the measure is a strategic decision to optimize processes and ensure the company’s long-term sustainability.

They assured that the departures were carried out in accordance with Panamanian laws, respecting all the rights of the former collaborators. Cervecería Nacional emphasized that this adjustment will not affect the production or prices of its most popular products. Furthermore, they reaffirmed their commitment to the country, noting that they maintain more than a thousand active jobs and continue to support social responsibility programs.

Cervecería Nacional is a large beverage company in Panama that produces beers like Balboa and also makes non-alcoholic beverages such as milk and juice. It is the most popular beer in Panama and is known for its light lager style. The company has been in business since 1887 and is a significant part of the Panamanian beverage market.

Brewery news World: AB InBev in talks to secure UEFA sponsorship
AB InBev is gearing up to become the global official partner in the beer category for all Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) men’s club competitions from 2027 to 2033. db reports.

The UC3, the joint venture between UEFA and European Football Clubs (EFC) that oversees competitions, has agreed to enter an exclusive negotiation period with AB InBev.

The move is set to end Heineken’s term as the official beer sponsor and steal the top sponsorship spot.

The negotiations mark the beer category’s first global sponsorship sales process initiated for the 2027-33 commercial cycles.

The decision by UC3 follows a competitive bidding process launched in October by UC3, supported by its global marketing and sales agency Relevent Football Partners.

Speaking to the drinks business, an AB InBev spokesperson said: “Our selection by UC3 reflects our commitment to football and our mega-platform strategy.”

The spokesperson told db: “The UEFA men’s club competitions will allow our brands to create more memorable experiences for fans globally and reinforce that beer and sports are better together. We look forward to becoming a great partner to UC3 for years to come.”

AB InBev is no stranger to raising the profile of its brands via sponsorship deals. The beer giant recently struck a ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion confirms closure of Stone & Wood Brisbane brewpub
Australia’s number one liquor supplier for 2025 has confirmed it will be closing the Brisbane outpost of its flagship craft beer brand on 21 November.

In a statement emailed to Drinks Trade, Stone & Wood's owner Lion attributes the decision to “rising operational costs and the broader challenges currently facing the hospitality industry” and says it “does not reflect the strength of Stone & Wood, which continues to be one of our most recognised and valued brands.”

So far this year, Lion has invested heavily in the Stone & Wood brand, opening its first-ever branded beer bar at Sydney Airport and kickstarting a multi-year partnership with the World Surf League. It has also announced several new product innovations including Citrus Radler.

A $30 million upgrade to the Stone & Wood Murwillumbah is also well underway with initial forecasts predicting its completion by Christmas this year.

Lion’s statement continues: “As Lion continues to assess our hospitality portfolios, we remain committed to evaluating non-core venues to ensure our operations align with our strategic vision. Our primary focus is on the home of our brands, ensuring their long-term sustainability and success.”

The news comes at a time of strong momentum for the leading beer business, which since July ...More info on site
