Japan: Three major brewers see sales jump 18% in October
|
Combined beer sales at three major brewers in Japan excluding Asahi Breweries Ltd. jumped 18 pct year on year in October, an industry estimate has shown, Nippon.com reported on November 14.
Asahi's failure to smoothly ship products in the wake of a ransomware attack against its parent, Asahi Group Holdings Ltd., in late September helped boost demand for rival beer brands, people familiar with the matter said.
The overall sales volume of beer, "happoshu" quasi-beer and "third-segment" beer-like products made by Sapporo Breweries Ltd., Suntory Spirits Ltd. and Kirin Brewery Co. posted a slower growth of 8 pct, with happoshu sales retreating 5 pct in the fallout from recent liquor tax revisions, according to the estimate.
By maker, sales of beer, quasi-beer and beer-like products rose 13 pct at Sapporo thanks chiefly to a smooth brand switch from Asahi at restaurants and bars using compatible beer tap systems. Suntory's sales, also in volume, remained unchanged due to a lack of limited-edition merchandise, despite its similar tap system advantage.
Kirin's sales went up 19 pct in value, pushed up by the release of the new Good Ale beer in October in addition to extra demand in place of Asahi beers.

Ireland: Diageo to invest additional €257.5m to double production capacity of Littleconnell brewery
|
Guinness producer Diageo is set to spend an estimated additional €257.5m on its new plan to double the brewery capacity of its €200m state-of-the-art carbon neutral brewery at Littleconnell, Co Kildare, The Irish Independent reported on November 13.
The drinks giant is to lodge plans in the coming days with a statutory planning application notice connected to the project confirming that Diageo is to seek a 10-year planning permission for the scheme.
It is understood that the investment on the new project will generate 800 to 1,000 jobs during the construction phase.
Plans to double the brewery capacity at the site will bring Diageo’s overall investment in the area to an estimated €457.5m.
The new plans for the 40-acre site at the IDA Newbridge Business and Technology Park at Littleconnell will include a 9,333 sqm building.
The statutory planning notice states that the total gross internal floor area of all new buildings in the application will be 14,976 sqm.
The scheme will also include ground-mounted solar panels covering an area of 15,000 sqm while space will be provided for a hard-standing area to accommodate 38 HGV truck parking spaces.
Construction work at the site has been ongoing since June of last year. The proposed expansion will more

Romania: Heineken to complete EUR11 mln investment at its Craiova and Ungheni breweries
|
Heineken has invested 100 million euros over the past ten years in its three breweries in Romania, located in Craiova, Miercurea Ciuc and Ungheni, The Diplomat reported on November 11.
The Dutch company is preparing to complete a 11 million euros investment aimed at installing heat pumps at its Craiova and Ungheni breweries. The project is expected to be finalized in December, with 2 million euros of the financing secured through non-refundable EU funds.
Heineken celebrated 55 years since the establishment of the Craiova brewery. The facility in Dolj County was acquired by Heineken in 2003, and investments made there over the last decade total between 30–35 million euros. The Craiova brewery currently employs around 170 people, a number that increases to approximately 240 during the summer season.
Heineken has been present in Romania since 2003, offering a diverse portfolio of local and international beer and cider brands, most of which are produced at its three domestic breweries in Craiova, Ungheni and Miercurea Ciuc.

Japan: Asahi sees double-digit sales drop in October after cyberattack
|
Japanese beverage giant Asahi Group Holdings says it suffered a double-digit drop in sales in October, the month after a cyberattack shut down its systems, NHK World reported on November 13.
Asahi said on November 13 that sales of soft drinks plunged about 40 percent in value terms compared to the same period a year earlier.
But the company's mainstay beer products performed better, with sales declining less than 10 percent. Asahi attributed that to its focused efforts in resuming order processing and shipments. It pointed to a large product lineup of non-alcoholic beverages as a factor behind the gap in sales.
By contrast, rival beer makers enjoyed strong growth last month.
Kirin Brewery reported a 19-percent jump in revenue from beer sales, while Sapporo Breweries posted a 13-percent increase in terms of volume. Both said they received more orders from eateries and other businesses.
Asahi is still struggling to fully restore its computer systems nearly one and a half months after the ransomware attack.

Cyprus: KEO completes major upgrade of its Limassol brewery
|
Cypriot beverage-maker KEO has completed a major technological upgrade at its brewery in Limassol, installing six new high-spec fermentation and maturation tanks, the Cyprus Mail reported on November 12.
According to the company, this is “part of its drive to enhance product quality and improve customer satisfaction”.
“The towering structures, which now dominate the entrance to KEO’s brewery, mark one of the company’s largest infrastructure investments in recent years,” the company added.
Four of the tanks stand 17 metres high with a diameter of 4.5 metres and a capacity of 1,600 hectolitres each.
Two smaller tanks, each eight metres tall with a diameter of 2.3 metres, have a capacity of 150 hectolitres and are designed for the production of specialty beers that require precision and detailed monitoring throughout the brewing process.
The tanks were built to strict German manufacturing standards and are equipped with an advanced automation and monitoring system that digitally supervises the fermentation and maturation processes in real time.
Through this system, key parameters such as temperature, pressure, and carbon dioxide levels are tracked continuously, ensuring that brewing conditions remain stable and controlled.
With automated measurement and regulation instruments, brewers can maintain consistent conditions at every stage of production, guaranteeing maximum uniformity and quality in

Thailand: Carabao Group unveils new strategy for 2026 to “unlock Thailand’s beer market”
|
Sathien Sathientham, vice chairman of Carabao Group, offered a candid reflection on the challenges faced by Thai brewers in a market dominated by a few major players, The Nation reported on November 11.
Despite setbacks, the company has refused to give up, unveiling a new strategy for 2026 to “unlock Thailand’s beer market” through innovative brewing techniques and international production standards.
He admitted the past two to three years had been difficult, involving constant experimentation and travel to perfect a recipe suited to Thai tastes.
“Initially, we wanted a Japanese-style beer, but the deeper we explored, the more we realised that every Japanese beer has its roots in German brewing,” he said, describing the learning curve behind Carabao’s new beer development.
Recently, the company invited over 50 retailers to sample its new Tawandang draft beer, ahead of its official launch, offering a new experience for Thai beer drinkers. For the first time, Tawandang draft beer will be available outside the brewery, targeting restaurants, pubs, and bars nationwide.
“From now until early next year, we’ll distribute around 100 beer dispensers and introduce new beer taps by the first quarter of 2026,” Sathien said, adding, “This time, our beer will meet international standards and

UK: Heineken to cut alcohol strength of its Foster’s beer to 3.4%
|
Foster's beer drinkers in the UK will soon find their lager's alcohol strength cut to 3.4%, Yahoo! Finance reported on November 12.
Heineken UK, which brews Foster's, said cutting the alcohol strength from the current 3.7% would make the lager eligible for lower rates of alcohol duty.
The brewer hinted at cheaper pints saying "customers benefit from more competitive pricing" because of the lower tax charge.
The change is set to go into effect by February, marking the second time in three years that Foster's alcohol percentage, or ABV, has been diluted.
Heineken UK said it was responding to changes in UK government policy, which have encouraged brewers to offer lower alcohol options.
It insisted punters would not notice the difference.
"Our master brewers have spent many months refining the recipe to ensure the taste remains unmistakably Foster's - crisp, balanced, and refreshing," the brewing giant told the PA news agency.
The government introduced a new system of alcohol duties based on strength in August 2023, which made less alcoholic beers and ciders relatively cheaper compared to more powerful alternatives.
Since then, rival brews Carlsberg Pilsner, Coors Light and Grolsch have also been reformulated to an ABV below 3.4% to qualify for the lower rate of tax.

Thailand: Carabao Group preparing to produce Tsingtao beer in Thailand
|
SET-listed Carabao Group Plc is preparing to produce Tsingtao beer as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in Thailand, The Bangkok Post reported on November 14.
Sathien Sathientham, chief executive of Carabao Group, said the company has partnered with Tsingtao Brewery and plans to serve as the OEM manufacturer for Tsingtao beer in Thailand, as well as its distributor.
Production is expected to begin in 2026, with Thailand potentially serving as a manufacturing and export base to other countries within Southeast Asia.
The company is also in talks with Tsingtao regarding the distribution of Carabao energy drink products in China, leveraging the Chinese company's strong logistics network. The initial plan is to launch in 2-3 provinces, one being Shandong, while it is also considering a launch in Yunnan province, where Carabao previously had a market presence.
The move could be a strategic effort to diversify risk and tap into new opportunities.
He said the brand is gaining recognition, partly due to its sponsorship of England's Football League Cup, widely known as the Carabao Cup.
According to its 2024 annual report, international sales accounted for about 27% of the company's total revenue.
Mr Sathien said this year's energy drink sales domestically have been strong, with the company becoming the

USA: USDA and Hop Quality Group release new hop variety Thora
|
The United States Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and the Hop Quality Group (HQG) have released a new public hop variety: Thora, Craft Brewing Business reported on November 12.
Developed to meet the needs of both craft brewers and hop growers, Thora blends high agronomic performance with a complex tropical aroma profile.
The hop takes its name from the Old Norse word Þórr, meaning “thunder.” It’s the first variety to emerge from the collaboration between HQG and USDA-ARS, which began in 2015 to create publicly available hops with modern flavor and strong field performance.
From the official press release:
“Thora is the culmination of over a decade of hard work by the Hop Quality Group to make meaningful change within the hop industry,” said Eric Desmarais, 4th generation owner of CLS Farms.”
HQG’s network of more than 50 U.S. craft breweries partnered with USDA-ARS hop breeders through every stage of Thora’s development. Brewers participated in early rub-and-sniff trials, pilot brews, and thiol analysis to ensure the variety would stand out in the brewhouse. The result is a hop that balances aroma intensity with grower practicality — a goal shared by the HQG since its founding in 2010 to advance hop

UK: Diageo invests in restoring up to 3,000 hectares of degraded peatland across Scotland
|
Diageo has announced a £5 million investment over the next five years to restore up to 3,000 hectares of degraded peatland across Scotland, Foodbev Media reported on November 13.
The initiative, delivered in partnership with environmental group Caledonian Climate, aims to boost carbon storage, enhance biodiversity and improve water management in key landscapes critical to the Scotch whisky industry.
Peat, which gives many Scotch whiskies their distinctive smoky flavour, plays a vital environmental role beyond whisky production. Healthy peatlands act as natural carbon sinks and help regulate water flow and quality, a crucial factor given that water is the number one ingredient in Scotch. However, many of Scotland’s peatlands have become degraded, releasing carbon and threatening local ecosystems.
Ewan Andrew, president of global supply and chief sustainability officer at Diageo, said: “Restoring and protecting Scotland’s peatlands is essential to addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity and reducing carbon emissions“.
“We’re taking a multi-pronged approach through restoration, innovation and collaboration, to restore many times more peat than we use, ensuring the smoky character of Scotch can continue sustainably for generations.”
The restoration programme will be managed by Caledonian Climate, working with scientific experts, landowners, NGOs and community partners. Monitoring will focus on carbon sequestration, biodiversity and water
