USA, VT: 7 Balls Brewing to celebrate soft opening this coming weekend
|
Another historic but long-empty building in downtown Bellows Falls will have a new life as 7 Balls Brewing celebrates its soft opening this coming weekend at 94 Rockingham St., The Commons reported on December 9.
The brewery developed from years of home brewing by four local men: Scott Brandon, Steve Adams, Paul Lawrence, and Chris Sherwin, good friends since middle school. They graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School together but started home-brewing beer together only about eight years ago.
At first, it was all for fun and friends. Then their friends started telling them, “We really like this beer. You guys need to brew this commercially,” Sherwin said.
Becoming commercial brewmasters was not necessarily on any of their life to-do lists — all four all had run their own businesses, and all are now well into their 50s.
Sherwin is a well-known glass artist with a studio in Bellows Falls, while Adams and Lawrence work at Chroma Technology in Rockingham. Brandon has moved away from the area and is not involved with the brewery going commercial.
Becoming a licensed brewpub was not necessarily the goal when the friends first started brewing.

Mexico: Mexico’s largest independent brewery Colima grows by 41% in 2025
|
According to data from Colima, considered the largest independent brewery in Mexico, it grew by 41% in 2025, thanks to its expansion plan into Europe, FreshlyBottled.com reported on December 9.
The brewery has positioned non-alcoholic beer as a strategic focus for its short-term future, while redefining its relationship with Mexican gastronomy.
In a market where 95% of the national market is dominated by two large groups, Colima Brewery affirms that it has found its own path.
It was a pivotal year for the company, which, through significant effort, consolidated its entry into Europe, expanding its production and strengthening its commitment to non-alcoholic beer, a category that completely changed the dynamics of its portfolio.
According to data from Cervecería Colima, this year it will close with a production of 25,000 hectolitres, 15% of which is non-alcoholic beer. This allowed it to achieve one of the most prestigious awards in the country: Best Brewery in Mexico at the Copa Cerveza México (Mexico Beer Cup).
Non-alcoholic beer has ceased to be a complement and has become the main activity, leading to the relaunch of its Colima Cero line in 2025, which received an immediate market response.

USA, WA: Bent Bine Brew Co. seeking new ownership
|
In 2017, brothers Tim and Todd Masbruch, opened Bent Bine Brew Co. in Belfair, Washington. The brewery/taproom is located along Highway 3, about 20 minutes southwest of Bremerton. The brewery serves as a community hub, regularly hosting live music and other events. And of course, as Bent Bine likes to say, “It’s all about the beer.”
Recently, Bent Bine Brew Co. announced it is seeking new ownership. “The Taproom is currently closed,” said a recent post on Bent Bine Brew’s social media. “We still have kegs for sale and will be distributing them while they last so hit me up if you want some.”
“I have scheduled some meetings with persons that are interested in buying the brewery and taproom and I’ll keep you guys posted,” continued the post. “The prior plans fell through unfortunately so here we are again. Love and thanks to all of you for your support, it’s meant a lot to all of us here at Bent Bine. Say some prayers and keep your fingers crossed that we find suitable successors.”

USA, NC: Pittsboro’s Havoc Brewing shutting its doors for good
|
Another Triangle brewery is shutting its doors. Havoc Brewing in Pittsboro is at least the third brewery to close in the span of about two months, The News & Observer reported on December 11.
In November, Cary’s Cotton House Craft Brewers poured its last brews. News of that closure was followed by Vicious Fishes announcing it was shutting down its taproom in Fuquay-Varina, and then in December, its Apex taproom.
Havoc Brewing did not cite a reason for the closure in its Monday, Dec. 8 social media post sharing the news.
“From the moment we opened our doors, Pittsboro welcomed us with warmth, curiosity, and an incredible sense of community,” Havoc Brewing wrote in the post. “Thank you for showing up for us, cheering us on, and making Havoc a place where friendships were made and memories were shared.”
The brewery’s last day will be Sunday, Dec. 14. Havoc Brewing is located at 39 West St. in Pittsboro.

Australia: Malting barley exports more than double in October compared to September
|
Australia exported 177,225 tonnes of barley and 93,756t of sorghum in October, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
October feed barley exports on 80,306t were down sharply from the 272,158t shipped in September, while malting exports on 96,919t were more than double the 35,283t shipped in September.
October sorghum exports were down sharply from the 226,975t shipped in the previous month, with China on 87,165t once again the destination for nearly all of the volume.
Compass Grain director Sam Roache said low stocks of barley and sorghum limited both sorghum and barley exports.
“Barley demand remains hot, with upwards of 3Mt of business now on the books for China from November to March-April, and no signs of pull-back from the buy side,” Mr Roache said.
“China’s local corn price has been strong and has rallied US$25/t plus over the past month, which is further underpinning an already bullish demand scenario.”
Mr Roache said the demand profile was matching off well against supply, with a record Australian barley crop broadly expected, and yield feedback supporting market estimates.

India: Indian beer sales boosted as drinkers switch from spirits

Favourable state policies in some Indian states are resulting in drinkers switching from spirits to beer according to government excise data,
Favourable regulatory changes in several Indian states are prompting drinkers to shift away from hard spirits towards beer, with excise data showing sharp volume gains following changes in taxation and retail rules.
According to a report in The Economic Times of India, revisions to liquor policies in Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Meghalaya have resulted in beer sales growth ranging from 14% to more than 100% since the changes were introduced. Together, the five states account for roughly a quarter of India’s total beer consumption.
The reforms have varied by state but broadly include higher duties on spirits, price rationalisation, and an expansion of retail access for beer. In Maharashtra, the government raised taxes on Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) by 50% in July while keeping beer prices unchanged, leading to a more than 30% rise in beer sales. Uttar Pradesh relaxed licensing norms in April and nearly doubled the number of outlets permitted to sell beer, driving sales growth of close to 14%. Assam recorded the strongest uplift, with beer volumes more than doubling since April after policy adjustments.

Panama: Beer, most alcoholic beverages production down in January-August
|
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), rum production in Panama has decreased considerably, FreshlyBottled.com reported on December 10.
Between January and August 2025, rum production fell by 37.1% compared to the same period in 2024, followed by gin (28.7%) and beer (11.9%).
However, a previous report published by the same institution confirmed that, from January to November 2024, the decline was 36.6%.
Experts state that this result is part of a broader trend in the Central American country, where a decrease in the production of other alcoholic beverages is also observed, except for some premium brands such as whisky and cognac, which increased significantly by 47% and 60%, respectively.
