USA: Brewers Association's 2025 year in beer: Contraction, closures and the fight for occasions
|
In the waning days of 2025, the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers—recaps a year of continued contraction, punctuated by creativity and innovation.
The headwinds facing the industry did not diminish compared to a year ago, and in some areas only strengthened. Measured in July in the BA’s midyear survey, craft volume was estimated to be down 5%, a somewhat steeper decline than the full-year trend of 2024 (-4%). While full 2025 production numbers will not be finalized until the Beer Industry Production Survey in Q1 2026, scan data for Q3 2025 suggests a continued weakening in the back half of 2025. As such, we may expect contraction slightly beyond that midyear figure for the full year of 2025.
Barring a drastic change in the last few weeks of the year, 2025 will be the second consecutive year in which brewery closings outpace brewery openings. Throughout the year, the BA has tracked 268 new brewery openings and 434 closings. While striking in headlines, closings still represent a relatively low percentage (4.4%) of total operating breweries, especially when compared against leisure and hospitality businesses broadly.
“If the craft beer industry is a ship,

Japan: Kirin set to ramp up beer development via proprietary AI
|
Major Japanese beverage maker Kirin Holdings Co is set to ramp up beer development with its proprietary artificial intelligence, a company official said, underscoring the expanding role of advanced technology in sensory fields, Japan Today reported on December 16.
The AI system identifies the compounds needed for a desired flavor profile from a wide range of taste-influencing factors, such as bitterness and richness, the official said, with Kirin planning to use the technology in beers released from March 2026 onward.
By combining human expertise with AI, the firm aims to boost both the accuracy and speed of its work, improving how quickly and precisely new beer flavors can be created, the official added.
As a beer's flavor depends on a complex mix of ingredients, determining the key components and ideal balance has been difficult, with much of the fine-tuning traditionally relying on the experience of individual brew developers.
Kirin has built an AI system based on two decades of ingredient data and consumer tasting surveys, allowing the company to quantify how specific compounds shape flavor and helping it design beers with targeted taste profiles.
When a new beer faces issues involving bitterness, the AI presents ingredient options that can address the problem. In tests in

UK & South Korea: New UK-South Korea deal to benefit exports of Guinness, cars, Scottish salmon
|
The UK has signed a new trade deal with South Korea designed to increase exports of cars, Scottish salmon and Guinness canned in Britain, The Guardian reported on December 15.
Keir Starmer described the deal, which replaces an existing agreement, as “a huge win for British business and working people”. It follows UK deals with India and the US, and the free trade agreement with the EU clinched this year.
Existing trade between the UK and South Korea is worth more than £15bn a year under a 2019 post-Brexit arrangement. The new deal covers the exports of services, automotive, pharmaceutical and food and drink, and would bring an extra £400m a year to the British economy, the UK government said.
Significantly, the deal also lowers the threshold on the quantity of parts in a car that must be British or from the EU to qualify for zero tariffs from January.
Under the current rules, 55% of a car must be made in the UK or the EU to qualify for duty-free sales. This has been dropped to 25% under the new deal, enabling carmakers to buy batteries or battery components from China and still qualify for zero-tariff exports to South Korea.

Brazil: Ambev inaugurates sustainable glass factory
|
Brazil’s leading brewer Ambev has inaugurated its glass factory in Carambeí, Paraná, Brazil, Glass International reported on December 16.
The facility is the company’s second glass factory in Brazil, adding to its plant in Rio de Janeiro.
It will run on 100% renewable electricity and is prepared to operate with biofuels.
It can also produce bottles with up to 80% recycled glass.
The total invested in the facility amounted to BRL 1 billion (approximately US $185 million).
Felipe Baruque, Vice-President Procurement & Sustainability at AB InBev, said: “In the last three years, we have invested more than BRL 10 billion in our operations in Brazil.
“We will continue to make progress to ensure a more efficient, modern chain prepared to keep up with market growth and consumer preferences.”
The plant has a capacity of 600 million bottles per year and will supply Ambev’s breweries in different states.
It will also support the growth of its premium portfolio and optimise delivery time and supply.
Since the beginning of the works, Ambev has generated more than 4,200 jobs in the region.
Now in operation, there will be at least 170 new direct and indirect jobs.

Norway & Sweden: Olvi Group acquires majority share in Brewery International group
|
Beverage company Olvi Group has expanded its footprint in the Nordic region through the acquisition of a 51% majority share in the Brewery International group, ESM reported on December 15.
This group of companies specialises in the import and distribution of premium beverages across Norway and Sweden, with Olvi Group retaining an option to acquire the remaining shares at a later date.
The transaction is expected to be finalised in January 2026, though the value and specific terms have not been disclosed.
Brewery International’s business operations encompass two key areas: the Brewery International companies, which focus on brewery products; and the Mission Wine & Spirits companies, dedicated to quality wines and spirits.
This dual focus aligns with Olvi Group’s strategic objectives of expanding its multi-beverage portfolio and fostering international growth through branded partnerships.
With 29 employees and a revenue of €22 million in 2024, Brewery International is renowned for its extensive selection of premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Notably, Brewery International represents leading global beer brands such as San Miguel and holds strong positions in the cider, RTD (ready-to-drink), soft-drink and energy drink categories.
The Mission Wine & Spirit companies complement this by importing and distributing wines and spirits from producers worldwide.
The group also boasts a broad
