Brewery news UK: Britons drinking less alcohol than before
Britons are drinking less alcohol than before, as financial pressures, health concerns and an ageing population lead to cutbacks in consumption, The Financial Times reported on December 21.

The average UK adult consumed 10.2 alcoholic drinks a week last year, the lowest figure since data collection began in 1990 and a decline of more than a quarter from the peak of 14 two decades ago, according to research company IWSR.

Teetotalism is not on the rise despite the decline in consumption, suggesting more moderate drinking habits have driven the trend.

“The population is ageing and older consumers physiologically can’t drink as much,” said Marten Lodewijks, IWSR president. “There are also elements of health consciousness . . . and the cost of living is up so people just can’t afford to ‘drink out’ as much.”

“Premiumisation” is also an emerging trend, as consumers seek out more expensive drinks while cutting back on how much alcohol they consume, helping the industry sustain revenues despite a decline in sales.

Despite the macro trend, most Britons are likely to be indulgent at least some time this week. A survey by charity Drinkaware found 57 per cent of UK adults expected to binge drink on Thursday, Christmas Day, rising to three-quarters of 18- to ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Beer brewing monks battle threat to their way of life
The abbey of Saint Sixtus has dealt with a lot in its almost 200-year history. But more recently, the Catholic monastery in West Flanders – best known for its premium Belgian Westvleteren beers – has been confronting a double challenge: a thriving black market that has forced it to adapt its centuries-old business model and a second, potentially greater existential hazard, the Trappist order running out of monks, Bloomberg reported on December 23.

The beer’s popularity can be seen on those mornings when vehicles from across Europe patiently wait to collect pre-ordered crates from forklift drivers in monastic robes, a process cloaked in enough bureaucracy to make it fiendishly difficult to buy.

Westvleteren is one of 11 breweries around the world certified by the International Trappist Association. That means their products are made in the vicinity of a Trappist abbey, under the supervision of monks or nuns, and profits are used for charity or the needs of the monastic community. Of the 11, five of those brewers are in Belgium, two in the Netherlands and one each in France, Spain, Italy and England.

The monks of Saint Sixtus are on track to brew for just 57 days this year, according to data ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands: Heineken fined for distributing beer cans without mandatory deposit
Heineken has been fined 1.5 million euros for distributing beer cans without the mandatory deposit in the Netherlands, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) announced.

The violation occurred between April 1 and April 11, 2023, when Heineken filled more than 7.2 million cans without the deposit logo and released them to the market, despite the legal requirement already being in effect.

The OM said Heineken failed to meet its legal obligations. The agency noted that the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) had repeatedly informed beverage producers, including Heineken, starting in September 2022 about the upcoming deposit requirement.

Heineken acknowledged a “complex transition period, during which a tolerance policy applied.” The company said that it was temporarily allowed to sell cans without the deposit logo if they were filled before April 1.

However, Heineken admitted it misinterpreted the policy and continued filling remaining cans without the deposit logo after April 1.

The company accepted the OM-imposed fine and announced it would make an additional voluntary donation of 500,000 euros to an organization supporting the expansion of the deposit system.

A Heineken spokesperson said, “We accept the fine imposed by the Public Prosecution Service of 1.5 million euros and are voluntarily donating 500,000 euros to a charity that ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Billionaire Castel's daughter seeks CEO ouster in bitter split
An increasingly acrimonious dispute over the direction of French billionaire Pierre Castel’s drinks conglomerate burst into full public view after a pair of heirs demanded the group CEO’s resignation and organized a vote aimed at ousting him, the Fortune reported on December 22.

Romy Castel, daughter of the 99-year-old founder, and Alain Castel, his nephew, told Bloomberg News they deeply disagree with the way Chief Executive Officer Gregory Clerc is running the wine and beer conglomerate and the power they say he’s amassed.

Clerc “is attempting to take control,” Romy Castel, 51, said in a telephone interview, referring to a move by the CEO earlier this month to remove Alain Castel from two company boards.

In a separate statement, Alain Castel, 65, questioned Clerc’s strategic vision and ability to effectively run the group, which has a workforce of 43,000.

“For me and my family, it has become vital that Mr. Clerc fully appreciate the situation and realize that his resignation is the best solution,” he said.

The closely held Castel Group, which had sales of about €6.5 billion ($7.6 billion) last year from its globe-spanning wine, beer and agricultural operations, has been torn in recent months by internal strife that has pitted key ...More info on site

Barley news UK: UK-bred spring barley Belter wins full approval for brewing
A malting barley variety developed in the beer-making grain's Norfolk heartland has won full approval for brewing, Eastern Daily Press reported on December 20.

Secobra UK, based at Pentney between Swaffham and King’s Lynn, says the accreditation for its UK-bred spring barley Belter is a "significant step for growers across the East of England", where malting barley is a cornerstone crop.

Belter has achieved full approval for brewing from the Malting Barley Committee (MBC), a cross-sector body which assesses and approves varieties of interest to the malting, brewing and distilling industries.

The variety has also secured a leading position on the 2026 AHDB Spring Barley Recommended List.

Secobra says Belter has been proven to deliver high yields - both treated and untreated - across England’s main barley-growing regions, along with strong grain quality, high extract and good fermentability, stiff straw and high brackling resistance, and "excellent consistency in the increasingly variable climate".

Belter was bred by Secobra barley breeder Paul Bury, whose programme focuses heavily on performance under Eastern counties’ conditions.

Secobra UK commercial manager Tom Barker said: “The East of England is central to the UK’s barley industry. Having Belter achieve full approval for brewing is a significant moment for growers and supply-chain partners across ...More info on site

Whisky news USA, KY: Suntory to halt production at Jim Beam whiskey plant in Kentucky for a year
Suntory Global Spirits Inc. will halt production of its bourbon whiskey Jim Beam for a year at its distillery in the U.S. state of Kentucky amid falling demand, it was learned on December 22.

The weak demand followed U.S. trade disputes with many economies due to the high tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

During the halt, Suntory Global Spirits, a U.S. unit of Japanese beverage giant Suntory Holdings Ltd., will invest for site improvement, a statement said. Facilities for other purposes, including craft whisky production, will continue to operate.

This year, U.S. whiskeys met with a consumer boycott in Canada over Trump tariffs. In addition, increasing health consciousness is sapping demand for alcoholic beverages.

Suntory Holdings acquired U.S. whiskey maker Beam Inc., now named Suntory Global Spirits, for 1.6 trillion yen in 2014.

Whisky news Canada, ON: Diageo lists Amherstburg whisky bottling plant for sale
The Diageo-owned property in Amherstburg, Ont., that bottles Crown Royal whisky has been listed for sale as the company prepares to shut down operations at the site early in 2026, CBC Lite reported on December 24.

The property, with a 110 St. Arnaud St. address, appeared on REALTOR.ca on December 22, with annual land taxes listed at just over C$310,000.

The industrial property, near Sandwich Street South and Alma Street, spans about 25 hectares (70.41 acres) and includes eight buildings totalling nearly 447,000 square feet. The listing notes direct rail access, secured yard space, trailer parking and clear heights ranging from 20 to 26 feet.

In an email to CBC News, a Diageo spokesperson wrote, “We have listed our Amherstburg facility and are committed to conducting a formal and thorough process to identify qualified potential buyers.”

The sale comes months after Diageo announced it would close its Amherstburg Crown Royal bottling facility by February, ending more than five decades of bottling operations in the border community.

In August, the London, England-based spirits giant said it was shutting the Ontario plant as part of a broader effort to improve its North American supply chain and move some bottling operations closer to U.S. customers.
