Malt news Taiwan: Hops, malt import tariff exemptions pass initial review
Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan’s Finance Committee on December 29 advanced a bill that would make malt and hops duty-free, aiming to lower production costs and support the long-term viability of the domestic beer industry, the Taipei Times reported.

The changes to the Customs Import Tariff, which do not require cross-party negotiations, would eliminate the original 7.5 percent tariff on roasted and unroasted malt, as well as on ground or unground hops and hop extracts, originally 15 and 7.5 percent respectively.

Domestic beer producers have struggled to compete with foreign brands, which benefit from lower tax rates and cheaper market prices, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Lin Szu-ming and other lawmakers said in their proposal.

The legislators said they drafted the amendments to support the long-term survival and development of domestic beer brands.

Lowering tariffs on malt and hops would cause about a NT$74.35 million (US$2.36 million) loss in tariff revenue, the National Treasury Administration said.

However, the tax cut would increase the competitiveness and demand for domestic beer, which is projected to generate an additional NT$169.74 million in tax revenue, the agency said.

After subtracting the loss in tariff revenue, the net fiscal benefit is estimated to be NT$95.39 million, it added.

The Ministry of Agriculture said it ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Mexican beer brands facing strategic turning point in the US
Major Mexican beer brands, including Corona and Modelo, are facing a strategic turning point in the United States as a combination of shifting consumer habits, heightened immigration concerns, and trade tariffs impact sales volumes. Leading distributors, including Constellation Brands, Heineken, and Molson Coors, report a notable decline in demand from their primary consumer bases, Mexico Business News reported on December 26.

A primary driver of the downturn is a reduction in consumption among the Hispanic population in the US Industry surveys indicate that 80% of Hispanic consumers expressed concern over the current socioeconomic environment, with 70% reporting fears regarding their personal finances.

According to market analysts, this economic and social uncertainty, compounded by anti-immigration policies, has led to a change in purchasing behavior. Consumers are participating in fewer social gatherings in both public spaces and homes and are reducing frequency of purchase at convenience stores and gas stations

Constellation Brands, which holds the US licenses for Modelo Especial, Corona Extra, and Pacífico, has lowered its financial guidance for the fiscal year ending in February 2026. The company now anticipates a sales decline of 2% to 4%, a sharp reversal from its previous forecast of up to 3% growth.

Recent fiscal reporting highlights the severity ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Suntory to prioritise beer with taxes set to be reduced next year
With taxes on beer set to be reduced next year, major beverage maker Suntory Holdings Ltd. will make a concerted effort to increase sales of its beer products, which will be positioned as the company’s “top priority,” President and CEO Nobuhiro Torii revealed during a recent interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The tax revision, which will take place in October 2026, is expected to lead to lower prices for beer products and a corresponding increase in demand. Suntory will be especially committed to revamping “Kinmugi,” a product currently categorized as a so-called “third-segment” quasi-beer. The beverage maker has decided to implement an unconventional strategy of increasing the malt ratio of Kinmugi so that it will fall under the category of true beer.

Torii explained that the company wants to make efforts to boost the drink’s appeal, including by improving its flavor. “We will further polish Kinmugi,” he said.

Torii went on to say that the company is maintaining strategy of using different price levels to draw a clear distinction between its various tiers of beer products, including Kinmugi, mid-priced “Suntory Nama Beer” and high-quality “The Premium Malt’s.”

“We are thoroughly cultivating each of our brands,” Torii said emphatically.

In September, then Suntory Holdings Chairman and ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Water supply additional challenge for brewers in Rajasthan
Foreign companies operating in India have long grappled with complex regulations and confusing tax laws, ET Hospitality reported on December 27.

In the northwestern state of Rajasthan, some of the world's biggest beverage firms face the additional challenge of securing and managing dwindling water supplies while navigating strict government rules and grievances of some local people who only get the resource piped-in once a week.

Nearly two-thirds of Rajasthan is covered by the Thar Desert, and its groundwater extraction ranks among the highest in India, adding to the economic pressures for the state in balancing the needs of its 85 million people, booming tourism business, industry and its big agricultural sector

Laws in India, the world's most populous nation, bar the movement of liquor across state borders without a special permit, effectively forcing companies to set up production in every state they want to sell in despite the water scarcity. So global giants like Diageo, Carlsberg and Heineken have to maintain factories in Rajasthan if they want to distribute their products in the state.

"(Water stress) is a growing issue in India," said Sonia Thimmiah, senior director of global sustainability at Heineken, the market leader, adding that a few years ago, water demand in ...More info on site
