Brewery news USA, VA: Good Ship Brewing Co. becomes Hopewell’s first brewery
Seven years after it was first announced, beer is finally flowing from Hopewell’s first brewery, Richmond BizSense reported on January 16.

Good Ship Brewing Co. opened last week at 204 E. Cawson St. in the city’s downtown area.

Hopewell native Donnie Barber began planning Good Ship in 2019, but the pandemic prompted him to pause work on the brewery and instead focus on his namesake homebuilding company Barber Construction Co. In 2024, he decided to move forward with the brewery’s buildout, and on Jan. 5, Good Ship opened its doors.

“I’m Hopewell born and raised, and we’ve had to leave and go to Williamsburg or Richmond to go to a nice brewery,” Barber said. “I just got tired of it and I had this epiphany. Even though it’s kind of cliche, but it was like ‘Field of Dreams’. I really had this vision that if I built it, they’d come. I really did.”

So far his hunch appears to be right.

Barber said Good Ship’s first Friday night brought a capacity crowd and that it hasn’t just been Hopewell locals turning up for a drink.

“It’s crazy because I went around and met everybody (last weekend). I know most of the people in Hopewell, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Love City Brewing to take over former Fat Lady Brewing space in Manayunk
A Philadelphia-based brewery will bring its craft beers to Manayunk with a new location opening this spring, WhatNow reported on January 15.

Love City Brewing, run by Melissa and Kevin Walter and celebrated for its Love City Lager, will take over the former Fat Lady Brewing space at 4323 Main St., according to a press release.

Fat Lady Brewing closed at the start of the year. Former owner Jane Lipton called it an “absolute labor of love” and a “terribly difficult decision” in a social media post.

The 5,884-square-foot space will be transformed into a tasting room and event venue, echoing the warm, inviting atmosphere of Love City Brewing’s flagship location in Philadelphia’s Callowhill neighborhood.

“We have been looking for the right opportunity to expand for a long time. We were very conscious about choosing a neighborhood that has great energy and foot traffic, as well as one that would allow our current location at 1023 Hamilton St. to continue to be successful–Manayunk checks all those boxes for us,” Melissa Walter said in a statement.

The interior will have a vintage feel with tin ceilings, original hardwood floors and exposed brick, accented by draping ivy, greenery and artwork from True Hand Society.

The first floor will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Saint Lucille’s Kitchen and Last Days of Autumn Brewing to close later this month
Saint Lucille’s Kitchen and Last Days of Autumn Brewing both announced that they plan to close, with the last day open set for January 24, WATE.com reported on January 15.

Saint Lucille’s is a Cajun restaurant located at 8 Emory Place. Last Days of Autumn is at 808 E Magnolia Avenue. Both are owned by Mike and Tracy Frede.

In their post, the Fredes cite “changing marketing conditions” for the closure of Last Days of Autumn Brewing, which has been open for almost 10 years. In posts for both restaurants, the couple thanked their staff and customers.

“The path of entrepreneurship is often unpredictable, and while we’ve had many wins, we’ve also faced tough challenges that led us to where we are now,” they said of Saint Lucille’s. “Thank you for being part of our journey. We wish you all the best.”

For the Last Days of Autumn Brewing, they wrote in part, “We cherish the experiences we’ve shared and hope you’ll visit us one last time before we close.”

Brewery news USA, OH: Midnight Owl Brewing Co. is shutting down
Midnight Owl Brewing Co. is shutting down this month, Cleveland.com reported on January 15.

Joel Warger and his wife Rosemary Mudry owned the brewery, which opened in October 2023. It went into the space formerly occupied by Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, the longtime neighborhood bakery.

The brewery posted via Instagram: “After 2 1/2 years, we have made the difficult decision to close Midnight Owl effective January 25th. We were fortunate for the opportunity to serve the residents of Shaker Heights and the Cleveland craft beer community. We are grateful for the support of all of you, and it was a joy getting to know folks over the last few years.”

Warger cut his teeth brewing at Great Lakes Brewing Co. and moved on to Goldhorn Brewery before Midnight Owl.

A deft brewer, Warger gravitated to German styles but didn’t shy from making various others. A recent taplist included Hefeweizen, Altbier, Pilsner, Hellesbock, West Coast India Pale Ale and a Hazy IPA.

The announcement comes on the heels of Voodoo Brewery’s closure in Cleveland Heights last month.

Midnight Owl is at 20312 Chagrin Blvd., Shaker Heights.

Brewery news Japan: Asahi Breweries sees December beer sales fall by over 20% while three other leading brewers enjoy 2% growth
Asahi Breweries said on January 15 that its sales fell by over 20% in December from a year earlier, as the company was forced to cut shipments following a computer system glitch due to a cyberattack on its parent company in late September, the Japan Times reported.

Meanwhile, the combined sales volume of beer, happōshu quasi-beer and "third-segment" beer-like beverages at the other three major Japanese brewers — Sapporo Breweries, Suntory Spirits and Kirin Brewery — rose by 2% in December, according to an industry estimate.

By volume, Sapporo's sales of such beverages fell by 1%. Suntory's sales increased by 6%. Kirin saw an 8% increase in sales value.

The growth reflected higher demand at home and restaurants during the year-end and New Year holidays, industry officials said.

In 2025, the combined sales volume of three brewers, excluding Asahi, fell by 3% from the previous year, according to an industry estimate.

Sapporo and Suntory saw a 1% decline in sales volume, while Kirin's sales were almost unchanged in value. Asahi did not disclose its cumulative results for 2025.

Brewery news Germany: Veltins sells more beer in 2025 than ever before in spite of sharp consumption decline in Germany
The German brewer Veltins has sold more beer and non-alcoholic beverages than ever before even though beer consumption is sharply declining in the country, Yahoo!Finance reported on January 14.

Sales rose slightly by 0.3% in 2025 to a record high of around 3.37 million hectolitres, the family-owned firm announced.

Turnover increased slightly by 0.4% to €461 million (about $537 million). Veltins does not disclose any information about its profits.

Brewery boss Volker Kuhl spoke of a crisis-ridden German beer market, where total sales of alcoholic beer are likely to have shrunk by more than 6% in 2025.

The loss of volume of around 5 million hectolitres in just one year is the highest in 75 years. Growth in non-alcoholic beers has only been able to cushion about a third of the loss in alcoholic beers.

According to Veltins' market analysis, beer sales in 2025 will have declined in all major sales channels: by 4% (2.7 million hectolitres) in retail, by 8% (1.3 million hectolitres) in the hospitality industry and by 7% (1 million hectolitres) in exports.

The decline in beer consumption has also left its mark on Veltins. Sales of the core brand Veltins Pilsener fell by 1.8%, but its Pülleken light beer brand posted a ...More info on site

Brewery news Nicaragua: Nicaraguan antitrust authority approves Heineken’s acquisition of FIFCO's stake in Nicaraguan Brewing Holding
The Nicaraguan antitrust authority PROCOMPETENCIA has formally notified Heineken of its approval of the transaction involving the acquisition of FIFCO's stake in Nicaraguan Brewing Holding, S.A., Ideal Investisseur reported on January 16.

This approval comes with a condition: the implementation of an antitrust compliance program in accordance with local regulations.

The completion of this operation, which includes the acquisition of FIFCO's beverage and distribution activities announced on September 22, 2025, is now expected in the first quarter of 2026, the company specifies. The Dutch group indicates that further communications will be made in due course.

No transaction amount is mentioned in the statement, nor any additional details on the financial terms of the operation.

Brewery news World: New Heineken CEO will need to deliver on higher beer sales strategy with fewer resources
Whoever Heineken picks to replace CEO Dolf van den Brink from June will be tasked with delivering on a strategy set in October promising higher beer sales with fewer resources, Reuters reported on January 13.

The world's second largest brewer behind Anheuser-Busch InBev announced van den Brink's resignation on January 12 after six years as CEO as Heineken battles falling sales and discontent among investors who want proof it can deliver.

The Dutch maker of Tiger and Amstel alongside its namesake lager has launched a search for a new CEO.

Here are some of the challenges they will face to placate investors and take on rivals, including AB InBev and Carlsberg.

Hopes of a recovery in slow or falling beer sale volumes have been knocked off course by everything from bad weather to political turbulence.

Analysts expect volumes to remain well short of the mid-single digit growth investors hope for until 2027.

And until people have more cash to spend, Heineken's incoming CEO has few levers to change this. Carlsberg is expected to show a big volume rise in its 2025 financial year, but mostly from its purchase of soft drinks maker Britvic.

That strategy might help Heineken's Danish rival offset slow beer sales and any shift ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: National Treasury considering a sharp increase in excise tax on beer
Beer and alcohol drinkers in South Africa could soon be paying noticeably more, following reports that the National Treasury is considering a sharp increase in excise tax on beer.

The Sunday Times reported that the Treasury held a virtual meeting with alcohol producers in November to discuss proposed excise adjustments to wine and beer aimed at reducing alcohol consumption.

Alcohol companies confirmed the meeting, with wine, beer, and spirits producers warning that above-inflation excise increases could drive consumers towards the illicit alcohol market.

This would undermine both revenue collection and efforts to reduce consumption.

Citing research, industry stakeholders indicate that illicit alcohol constitutes approximately 18% of total alcohol consumption in South Africa.

Policy proposals, including a 20% increase in excise on standard beer, should be carefully evaluated.

According to Nomcebo Dlamini, Campaign Manager for the South African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA), a proposed 20% hike in excise tax at the point of production would “obviously increase the price of beer”.

However, she argued it is both necessary and overdue. Dlamini said excise taxes are one of the most effective and cost-effective ways to reduce alcohol harm, and that this is a move her organisation fully supports.

Dlamini believes the current price of beer in South Africa is ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Carlsberg commissions new canning line at Mysuru brewery
Carlsberg India has commissioned a new canning line at its Mysuru brewery, reinforcing its long-term ambition for Karnataka following a Rs 350 crore expansion pledge made at Invest Karnataka 2025. The new can line has been set up with an investment of Rs 100 crore. The latest development by the IPO-bound beer company has a production capacity of 22,000 cans per hour and is slated to enhance the overall brewery’s capacity to cater to rising consumer demand. The addition is part of Carlsberg India’s broader expansion strategy across key markets in the country. Nilesh Patel, managing director, Carlsberg India, noted that the expansion underscores the company’s long-term commitment to Karnataka. “The additional capacity will enable us to sustainably produce international-quality beers, contribute to state excise revenues and generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for the local community.”

Speaking at the inauguration, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, member of the Legislative Council (MLC), Government of Karnataka, said the company’s continued investments reflected strong confidence in the state’s industrial ecosystem and would support regional development through increased employment opportunities and local economic activity, particularly in Mysuru. Located in Nanjangud taluk, the Mysuru brewery spans 28 acres and manufactures Carlsberg and Tuborg brands. The facility operates biomass ...More info on site
