USA: American Malting Barley Association releases annual variety list
|
The American Malting Barley Association has added ABI Montana to its annual list of recommended varieties for growers for the upcoming crop year.
The list provides farmers with guidance as to what varieties the industry may be contracting or purchasing in the coming year.
Some varieties will be used in large quantities and others only in niche markets, according to an association press release. Farmers are encouraged to contact their local elevator, grain handler or processor to gauge market demand for any variety grown in their region.
ABI Montana is a spring, two-row malting barley variety intended for adjunct brewing. It is primarily adapted to dryland and low-irrigation production systems in northwest Montana.
The variety was brought forth for recommendation from AB InBev. Three varieties were removed from the list due to declining acreage, all released by AB InBev: spring six-row Celebration and two spring two-rows, Conrad and Merit 57.
The association is a nonprofit trade organization representing the interests of malting barley end users, including maltster, brewers, distillers and food processors.
The complete list of recommendations:
Recommended spring varieties:

AAC Energy
ABI Cardinal
ABI Eagle

The board of directors for Indian spirits producer Radico Khaitan has approved the establishment of a Scotch whisky division that will be 100% owned by the company, The Spirits Business reported on January 28.
On 22 January, the company filed a statement with the National Stock Exchange of India, reporting its intention to incorporate its UK subsidiary, Radico Khaitan Scotland Ltd.

Denmark: Carlsberg launches new lower alcohol beers platform
|
As moderation becomes a defining force in how Danes enjoy beer, Carlsberg Denmark is launching a new platform of lower alcohol beers under the category name “session.” The range is designed to give consumers more flexibility and freedom of choice, without compromising the taste or quality of their beer.
The first product in the portfolio, Carlsberg Nordlyst, debuted on 21 January. The 2.5% ABV lager contains roughly half the alcohol of a classic pilsner, offering a fullflavoured alternative for moments when consumers want to dial down the alcohol percentage.
New nationwide research in Denmark conducted by Ipsos for Carlsberg shows a clear shift. 64% of Danes say they have recently begun moderating their alcohol intake or have done so within the past five years. Two out of three consumers say they are open to trying a lower alcohol beer or choose it as their primary option. The interest is especially high amongst men.
"Danes have increasingly become beer flexitarians,” says Peter Haahr Nielsen, Managing Director, Carlsberg Denmark.
“This is due to a moderation trend that is not about either-or, but about freedom of choice to choose the beer and alcohol percentage that suits them best in the situation. This has created a

India: United Breweries launches Kingfisher Smooth in Karnataka
|
United Breweries Ltd (UBL) announced the launch of Kingfisher Smooth in Karnataka to expand Kingfisher’s presence in the mainstream strong beer segment, India Info Online reported on January 29.
The launch in Karnataka marks a significant step in bolstering Kingfisher’s footprint in the category. It is one of the largest beer markets in India.
The company commented that strong urban consumption, a favorable beer culture, and vast on-premise and modern retail presence are the major factors making Karnataka a crucial market for the roll-out. The launch comes after early consumer response to Kingfisher Smooth in Rajasthan.
United Breweries said that it has developed Kingfisher Smooth for younger legal-age drinking consumers seeking a smoother and more approachable beer experience.
The company is using imported hops to brew the product. It does not contain any added sugar and is set to deliver a clear, smooth taste while maintaining the strength as preferred.
Kingfisher Smooth will be available across major retail outlets in Karnataka. It will be priced at ₹100 for a 330 ml can, ₹120 for a 330 ml bottle, ₹155 for a 500 ml can, and ₹200 for a 650 ml bottle.
Recently, the business has also introduced a company-wide Productivity and Cost Effectiveness Programme
