USA, MS: 9 Toes Brewing Company soon to have its own brew pub in downtown Pass Christian
|
Downtown Pass Christian has a new compound of places to dine, stay and play, and soon it will have its own brew pub, MSN reported on January 31.
Why it's named 9 Toes Brewing Company is a mystery, as construction progresses on this brewery tucked between Hotel Pass Christian, Bacchus on the Beach and the new Pass Bungalows with its assortment of restaurants and shops. This is the finishing touch to the new area created by the Nicaud Group.
The owners are shooting to open in time for beer and cheers on St. Patrick's Day, and they've hired one of the best brewers in Alabama, said Tyler Kidd, a co-owner.
Jimmy Sumpter has won multiple awards, he said, and is known for creating a variety of beers, India pale ale, pilsners and fruit sours during his time as head brewer at a top brewery in Birmingham, which recently won brew of the year.
He's relocating to the Pass and going to work creating a collection of 9 Toes beers and seltzers.
"We're shooting for six to eight brews for opening," Kidd said, "but we've got an 18 PATH system there, so within the next three or four months, we'll have 18 to 20 beers."

USA, TN: Smackdab Brewing planning to open in downtown Murfreesboro before end of this year
|
With help from Murfreesboro City Council, Jeff Bellamy, Brent Fagan and Nowell Robbins have developed plans to open a microbrewery and taproom in downtown Murfreesboro, calling it Smackdab Brewing. The three have been looking for a location for some time, and when the building where Murfreesboro Chiropractic is located came up for sale, they jumped on the opportunity, the Rutherford Source reported on February 3.
Previous to a new law passing in 2022, which allows breweries, wineries, and distilleries to move away from industrial areas, the opportunity to open a brewery in downtown Murfreesboro was not possible. That is why Mayday Brewery and Cedar Glade Brewery were open in industrial areas, tucked away from major arterials.
Their idea came at a good time, as the city is in the middle of working to revitalize the downtown area and create a place that brings the community together.
“[Creating community] has always been part of the vision, and it’s a big part of craft breweries,” Fagan told whatnow.com. “You want to have your regulars, and have a spot where people can come relax and hang out.”

USA, NC: Edward Teach Brewing to close its doors after more than eight years in business
|
Edward Teach Brewing announced it will close its doors after a little more than eight years in business, WWAYTV3 reported on January 30.
In a message posted to supporters, the brewery said it has been more than a place to grab a drink, calling it a spot for first dates, trivia nights and friendships.
The brewery said it plans to mark its final day with a celebration on Feb. 15, teasing specials and a final toast with supporters.
Edward Teach Brewing has been in the news in recent years amid a series of controversies.
Most recently, the brewery confirmed a change in ownership and management, saying it came under new ownership on July 14, 2025. The brewery also said at the time that the taproom had been closed for several months while repairs and restoration work were completed after storm damage.
No additional details about the closure were announced in the brewery’s post.

USA, MD: Frederick’s Idiom Brewing Co. to permanently close
|
Idiom Brewing Co. has announced it will permanently close, bringing an end to its seven-year run in Frederick’s craft beer scene, The MoCo Show reported on January 30.
In a message posted to social media on Friday, owner and head brewer Mike Clements said the brewery will close its doors for good on February 15, 2026. Clements cited ongoing challenges in the brewing industry, describing a “perfect storm” that the business was ultimately unable to overcome despite continued efforts. He encouraged customers to visit during the brewery’s final weeks to support staff, share memories, and help finish remaining beer. Idiom has operated with a focus on community since opening, serving as a gathering place for local residents and visitors.
The closure follows an announcement made last August, when Idiom revealed it had been listed for sale. At that time, founder Michael Clements explained he initially planned to sell only the production brewery in order to downsize but later decided to list both the taproom and production facility, along with the brand and its rights. USA, OH: Magic City Brewing Co. to close for good on February 14
|
Magic City Brewing Co., the beloved heavy-metal-themed brewery and taproom on Manchester Road that has been a mainstay of Akron’s craft beer scene since 2019, announced Feb. 3 that it will close for good on Feb. 14, the Beacon Journal reported.
"Well folks, it’s been an amazing ride, but all good things must come to an end," Magic City said on Facebook. "MCBC’s last day of business with be Feb 14th, Valentine’s Day. We will be open as usual until then. Please swing through, have a beer or 2, and let’s wrap thing thing up right."
The closing marks another blow to the city's craft beer industry. As of Feb. 3, The Rabbit Hole – a second location opened by Magic City in the former R. Shea Brewing Co. space in Merriman Valley – has already shut its doors.
Magic City first carved out a devoted following with its eclectic beer offerings and community-oriented taproom after relocating to Akron from Barberton in 2019.
Comments under the brewery’s closing announcement reflected sadness and disbelief among fans and regulars. Many patrons expressed shock that the closure came with little public warning and lamented that the taproom was a favorite stop during visits to Akron.

The Czech Republic: Budějovický Budvar enjoys another record year as beer output grows by around 1%

Budějovický Budvar continues its growth trajectory: the state-owned brewing group is looking back on another record year, having increased its sales figures for the third consecutive year. The brewery is thus maintaining its strong position on the domestic market as well as in export markets, The Prague Daily News reported on February 2.
The state-owned brewing group Budějovický Budvar closed 2025 with a strong result. Total output rose to 1.946 million hectolitres, representing an increase of around one per cent compared with the previous year. This marks the third year of growth in a row for Budvar, making 2025 one of the most successful years in the company’s history.
“We are pleased that we are growing sustainably and repeatedly. For the third time in a row, we have increased our sales at a time when beer consumption in the Czech Republic and in many foreign markets is declining. This is clear proof of consumers’ trust in our brand and the quality of our beer,” said Budvar Director Petr Dvořák.

UK alcohol levies have now officially risen in line with the Labour government’s Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation. Here’s everything you need to know, including how gin, whisky, and beer is impacted, the Food Bible reported of February 2.
The average UK adult consumes 10.7 litres of pure alcohol every year, according to Alcohol Change UK.
Britain’s favourite tipples include: spirits and liqueurs such as Bailey’s and Smirnoff vodka; stouts like Guinness; and prestigious wine brands, including Moet & Chandon, as per YouGov’s recent ‘most popular alcohol brands’ poll.
But the price of a pint of golden ale and Scotch whisky bottles are set to skyrocket after Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ alcohol duty rise finally came into effect on Sunday,1 February.
The 3.66 percent tax increase was first confirmed in November’s autumn budget.
Data suggests that 37.5 ABV bottles of gin will see a 38p duty increase (now £8.98 after VAT) while 14.5 percent ABV red wine bottles will be 14p more expensive.
Similarly, a 40 percent ABV bottle of Scotch whisky will see its duty grow by 39p, reaching £9.51, inclusive of VAT.

|
Alcohol-free and low-alcohol beer is gaining popularity in the Netherlands, now accounting for 8 to 9 percent of total beer sales, AD reported. Consumption of these beers, which contain up to 0.5 percent alcohol, increased 14 percent over the past year.
Dutch brewers are ahead of schedule in reaching their goal of a 10 percent market share by 2030. “We will reach that goal earlier,” Abel van de Sluis of Nederlandse Brouwers, the trade association representing the fifteen largest breweries in the country, told AD. “You can hardly taste the difference between alcohol-free beer and the regular version.”
Specialty alcohol-free beers are particularly popular, with sales rising 27.5 percent—twice the growth rate of the overall alcohol-free beer market. "You can hardly taste the difference between alcohol-free beer and the regular version,” van de Sluis said.
On the other hand, elsewhere in the hospitality sector, the number of cafés continues a slow decline. The Chamber of Commerce (KVK) recorded 10,038 cafés, down from 10,240 a year earlier. Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN) said younger consumers, especially Gen Z, are increasingly visiting coffee bars alongside traditional cafés. Since 2013, when there were more than 12,800 registered cafés, the total number has steadily decreased.

Belgium: Alken-Maes to work more closely with Heineken
|
Alken-Maes is reviewing its internal organisation and plans to work more closely with Dutch brewer Heineken, the Belgian company announced. The precise impact on staff has not yet been determined, the Belga News Agency reported on February 3.
Employees have been informed that the company intends to reassess its structure "to strengthen capacity and productivity and serve customers more effectively". As part of that process, Alken-Maes aims to deepen cooperation with Heineken in the Netherlands. Alken-Maes is fully owned by the Heineken Group. Certain specific services would be centralised in shared service centres.
"We expect the impact on the organisation to be limited," the company said. What the changes will mean for employees remains unclear. "There are a number of shifts at management level, but the rest still needs to be examined," said ACV trade union representative Karin Schaerlaekens.
Alken-Maes stressed that it will maintain a strong presence in Belgium. "Our brands, customer relationships, teams and breweries will remain local. Our intention is to pool certain resources and capabilities across markets so that we can operate and compete more efficiently, respond more quickly to change and continue to build the skills we need for the future," the company said.

World: Castel CEO and two heirs clash over outcome of shareholders’ meeting

The clash between the top executive of the billionaire Castel family’s eponymous firm and two heirs took an unexpected turn after the two sides disputed the outcome of a shareholders’ meeting, Bloomberg reported.
On Monday (Feb 2), the Castel family said in a statement that chief executive officer Gregory Clerc had been revoked by a “qualified majority” as a director of Singapore-based Investment Beverage Business Management (IBBM), a key entity of the group. The chairman of the entity, Pierre struggle over operational control of the Castel empire, which distributes beer and wine around the globe.
The outcome of the extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on Monday “marks the beginning of a new era of governance for the Castel Group,” the family said in its statement, adding that they “intend to draw all the necessary conclusions from these dismissals” as a first step to restructuring governance.
For its part, IBBM said the resolutions that failed to pass were aimed at amending the company’s constitution along with removing the directors. It said the directors would continue to work according to the “principles and ideals of the founder of the Castel Group, Mr Pierre Castel.”

Australia: Diageo sells Starward whisky stake back to founder
|
Starward Whisky founder David Vitale has fully acquired the Australian distillery, returning the brand to founder-led control. The acquisition marks the conclusion of the involvement of Diageo, which had held a minority stake in the business since 2015 through its now-defunct Distill Ventures accelerator program, MSN reported on January 30.
"It's been more than ten years since I last led Starward," Vitale said in a news release.

China & UK: China agrees to reduce tariffs on Scotch whisky import

China will reduce its tariffs on Scotch whisky to 5% from 10% following talks between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the British premier's press secretary said on January 29.
The reduction is a boost for one of Britain's most valued export products in a key growth market, and the press secretary said it was expected to be worth 250 million pounds ($345.35 million) over five years for UK whisky exporters.
Starmer discussed lowering whisky tariffs in talks with Xi in Beijing earlier on Thursday, as he sought economic wins despite disagreements in other areas such as human rights.
Scotland's whisky industry is a high value export that Britain has sought to promote in trade deals. A landmark free trade agreement with India sealed last year cut tariffs to 75% from 150% initially, reducing to 40% over the next decade. But efforts to reduce or exempt the industry from U.S. tariffs have so far come up short.
China agreed to strengthen labelling requirements for Scotch whisky to help protect it from counterfeiting and tampering a year ago during a financial dialogue when British finance minister Rachel Reeves visited Beijing.
