UK & US: Scotch whisky exports hit by US tariffs

New figures from the Scotch Whisky Association show US shipments sliding sharply after tariffs returned, with producers warning that rising domestic costs and global trade pressures are pushing the industry to breaking point, The Drinks Business reported on February 12.
Scotch whisky exports to the United States have fallen significantly since tariffs were reintroduced, with shipment volumes down 15% between May and December 2025, according to fresh data from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA).
The figures, released as part of the SWA’s annual export report, show the impact of a 10% tariff imposed in April 2025 across all Scotch whisky categories. The US remains the industry’s most valuable export market, but exports are now lower both in value and volume compared with the previous year.
Globally, Scotch whisky exports fell by 0.6% in value in 2025 to £5.36bn, while volumes dropped by 4.3% to the equivalent of 1.3bn 70cl bottles, or 43 bottles per second.
This compares with exports of £5.4bn in 2024. The SWA attributed the decline to a combination of international tariffs, higher costs of doing business in the UK and softer consumer demand across key markets.

USA, VA: Angry Man Brewing Co. becomes Chesterfield’s newest brewery
|
Chesterfield-based restaurateurs Matt and Karen Verdisco operate three food, fun and beverage venues less than a mile from each other. Their newest, Angry Man Brewing Co., opened in November 2025, The Progress Index reported on February 13.
"We've been in the craft beer business for almost 15 years and have always wanted this to be an extension of what we do," Karen Verdisco said. "The timing was right to do it now, so here we are."
Karen owns the business and Matt, her partner in life and business, is the general manager, head brewer and official angry man. Their most recent biz adventure is adjacent to their pub Brew Craft Bar & Kitchen [Brew] in the Chesterfield Meadows Shopping Center. In space previously occupied by Starbucks, the couple's Local Pizza and Brewery is located in the Commons Plaza shopping center.
Angry Man Brewing Co. features six core beers with additional rotating seasonal and small batch offerings:

USA: Constellation Brands appoints Nicholas Fink as CEO

Constellation Brands said on February 12 it appointed Nicholas Fink as its top boss, replacing Bill Newlands, as the beermaker battles demand pressures, Reuters reported.
Fink, who was previously the CEO at the security and digital products firm Fortune Brands Innovations, will take over as the top boss of the Modelo beer maker on April 13. He had served on Constellation's board for the past five years.
Newlands, who joined the company in 2015 and has been at the helm since 2019, will step down from the board in April, but will continue to serve as a strategic adviser over the next several months to help ensure a smooth transition of leadership, Constellation said.
Constellation has been battling weak alcohol sales as Hispanic consumers pull back on purchases amid the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration and a broader economic uncertainty driven by volatile trade policies and rising living costs.
"Given Fink's experience on the board, we do not expect this transition to lead to a major change in strategic direction," TD Cowen analyst Robert Moskow said in a note, but added that Fink had been linked to significant organization and portfolio change at Fortune Brands.

USA, NY: Rebel Sailor Brewing Co. and Kitchen to close after just three years in business
|
After just three years in business, Rebel Sailor Brewing Co. and Kitchen will pour its last pint Feb. 28, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
Co-owner Robert Payne and his partners opened the Route 21 brewery in 2023. It quickly became a staple at local events like Stout Month and drew fans with seasonal brews, including a honey-infused holiday beer made with honey from Shortsville Reindeer Farm.
The team plans food, drink and merchandise specials all month, plus a farewell celebration Feb. 27 and 28 to mark the brewery’s third anniversary. Owners thanked customers for their support and hinted this may not be a permanent goodbye.

USA, MA: Weymouth first brewery Barrel House Z closes its doors
|
Weymouth’s first brewery has closed its doors, the Patriot Ledger reported on February 12.
Barrel House Z shuttered Feb. 7 after nine years in business. A post on the business’s Facebook page that announced the closure cited changing drinking habits and unsuccessful attempts to pivot and attract more customers.
The brewery was started by Russ Heissner, the first-ever brewer for Harpoon Brewery. In 1986, Heissner moved from California to Boston after having graduated from UC-Davis with a focus in brewing science. He’s credited with creating the recipe for Harpoon Ale and worked there until 1992.
Barrel House Z, which was in a 9,600-square-foot space located at 95 Woodrock Road, specialized in small-batch beers aged in liquor barrels.
“In summary, we struggled mightily in the face of a shrinking market, rising costs to operate, and a substantial debt service that was taken on in the aftermath of Covid,” Heissner wrote in the Facebook post.
Heissner added that he knew the brewer was “in for an uphill battle” in 2023, noticing a declined demand for craft beer and fewer people going out to eat and drink.

A stronger rand and firm mineral commodity prices drove up beer and soft drinks volumes for Zimbabwe’s Delta Corporation during the quarter to December while also boosting sales for African Distillers (Afdis), in which South Africa’s Distell has an interest, the Business Report said on February 11.
Prices for gold and PGMs - which are key commodities produced in Zimbabwe - prices have appreciated over the past few months, boosting consumption patterns and economic activity in regional countries.
Delta Corporation brews alcoholic products in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia and also manufacturers soft drinks and ready to drink cordials. It said this week that consumer spending during the quarter to December and which encompasses the festive season was firm.
This has been attributed to “firm mineral prices, increased mining activity, and improved agricultural” performance.
“Diaspora remittances also increased, benefiting from stronger cross exchange rates in key source markets such as South Africa (rand) and the United Kingdom (pound),” said Faith Musinga, company secretary for Delta Corporation.

Japan: Asahi’s January beer sales fall 11% on lingering impact of last year's cyberattack

Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. said on February 12 that its sales of beer and beer-like beverages in January fell 11 percent on a value basis from a year earlier on the lingering impact of a system failure caused by a cyberattack last year.
Although the Japanese beverage giant has resumed its online order-taking system, shipments of all products have yet to restart, the company said.
Other than alcoholic beverages, sales volume at Asahi Soft Drinks Co., which deals with soft drinks including "Mitsuya Cider" carbonated drink, dropped 16 percent.
Estimated sales at Asahi Group Foods Ltd., which handles food items and powdered milk, were slightly higher than the previous year.
Asahi Group Holdings said its logistics operations have largely returned to normal this month, recovering to pre-September cyberattack levels. Shipments of all products have resumed at Asahi Soft Drinks and Asahi Group Foods, while full shipments at Asahi Breweries Ltd. are expected to restart in April.
Among Japan's three major brewers excluding Asahi - Kirin Brewery Co., Sapporo Breweries Ltd. and Suntory Spirits Ltd. - Kirin and Sapporo reported increased sales of beer and beer-like beverages, indicating alternative demand for Asahi products.

China: Chinese buyers ramp up purchases of Australian barley and U.S. sorghum

Chinese buyers have ramped up feed grain purchases in recent months, taking large volumes of Australian barley and U.S. sorghum after rain damaged the domestic corn harvest, Reuters reported on February 12 citing trade sources.
Importers have booked about 45 cargoes, or at least 2.5 million metric tons, of U.S. sorghum over the past three months, according to two Asian traders familiar with the deals, or three times the quantity shipped in all of 2025.
Chinese buyers have also been taking one million tons of Australian barley a month since December, around double last year’s monthly volumes, said three traders involved in some of the transactions.
“These sales have been driven by very high corn prices in China and competitive prices in Australia,” said one grains trader, who expects continued Chinese demand for barley and sorghum in coming months.
All the sources declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the media.
By January 29, data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows, 1.6 million tons of U.S. sorghum had been sold to China since early November, with 1.259 million tons headed for destinations categorised as “unknown”.

Ukraine: Carlsberg Ukraine installs own generators to operate during power outages

Carlsberg Ukraine’s Kyiv plant has installed 1.5 MW diesel generator and cogeneration units (DGU, CGU) to ensure a stable power supply and plans to install a 500 kW solar power plant and a 5 MW power storage facility with a capacity of 10 MWh by the end of the year, according to Roman Sapiga, head of the plant’s automation and electrical engineering group, Ukraine Open for Business reported.
“Our enterprise must operate without interruption, so the uninterrupted operation of our power generation facilities is extremely important to us. We chose a 1.5 MW diesel generator and a 1.5 MW gas generator… They work together in an ‘island’ mode and are connected to each other,” he said at the EnergoTech-2026 conference, which took place recently in Kyiv.
Sapiga noted that generation is controlled by a special program, which is constantly being improved.
“Sitting at our workstations, we can see almost all elements of the generation system and can start them up. It is necessary to manage them correctly. Every time we encountered a problem, a new automatic solution appeared,” shared the representative of Carlsberg Ukraine.

Ursus Breweries announces the appointment of Roman Trzaskalik as Managing Director, effective March 1, 2026, the Romania Journal reported on February 12.
Roman joined Asahi Europe & International in 2018 as Marketing Director for the Czech Republic and Slovakia (CZSK). After five years in this role, he was appointed Sales Director for the Czech Republic in 2023.
