India: Carlsberg reported to have begun preparations for potential listing of its India unit
|
Carlsberg A/S has appointed three banks and begun preparations for a potential listing of its India unit that could raise as much as $700 million, according to people familiar with the matter, the Economic Times reported on February 23.
The company has picked Kotak Mahindra Capital Co. and the local units of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc. as advisers on the proposed share sale, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. A draft red herring prospectus could be filed as early as May, they said.
The offering is expected to consist of a secondary share sale by the parent company and could take place later this year, the people said. Details, including the size, structure and timing of the transaction, are still being finalized and may change.
A listing would position the brewer alongside a growing number of multinational companies tapping Indian markets to capitalize on higher local valuations. Hyundai Motor Co., LG Electronics Inc. and Carraro India Ltd. have all listed their Indian operations in the last two years to access the country’s deep domestic investor base. Hyundai Motor trades at 11 times estimated earnings for this year, compared with about 32 times for

South Korea: Sapporo Brewery achieves steep growth in South Korea’s imported beer market
|
Sapporo Brewery showed a steep growth in South Korea’s imported beer market last year, raising its market share from fourth to third. As a result, Sapporo Beer ranked third in South Korea’s import beer brands after Asahi and Heineken, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on February 23.
Citing data from global market research firm Nielsen IQ, MZ Beveridge, Sapporo Beer's official importer, said on the 23rd that Sapporo Beer had a 10% market share in Korea last year. A company official added, "Sapporo Beer is the brand with the largest increase in market share based on sales among domestic imported beer brands in 2025."
Import volumes have also expanded. Last year, imports increased by about 190% annually since 2021, rapidly expanding its presence in the domestic imported beer market.
Basic product competitiveness and new product strategies were behind this growth. Sapporo Beer, which celebrates its 150th anniversary, has secured a stable consumer base with its balanced flavor and clean throat.
Sapporo Draught Beer 70, launched in June last year, is the first product in Japan to be developed after more than 300 trials for about seven years to reduce sugar (carbohydrates) and purine in beer. Both of them were sold out early at the time

UK: HSBC working urgently to shield itself from significant losses due as BrewDog teeters on edge of split-up
|
HSBC is working urgently to shield itself from significant losses on tens of millions of pounds lent to BrewDog, as the craft beer company teeters on the edge of being split up, Bitget App reported on February 22.
The bank has secured its loans with BrewDog’s expansive Scottish brewery, granting HSBC the authority to take control of the property if the situation worsens.
This action follows BrewDog’s recent decision to initiate a rapid sale process, managed by restructuring specialists at AlixPartners, as the company struggles financially.
These developments have raised concerns among both investors and creditors about potential financial losses. HSBC is currently BrewDog’s primary lender.
Meanwhile, James Watt, BrewDog’s co-founder, is reportedly preparing to inject £10 million of his own funds in an effort to rescue the business.
According to Sky News, Mr. Watt is gathering a group of investors to purchase the entire company, including its bars, brands, and brewing operations, though the identities of these backers remain undisclosed.
By securing the brewery as collateral, HSBC has strengthened its position in case the sale falls through and BrewDog enters administration.
Recent documents reveal that HSBC’s loans are tied to BrewDog’s main brewery in Ellon, Aberdeenshire. This facility, which opened in 2012 and also houses a

India: Brewing industry to invest in Uttar Pradesh
|
The brewing industry will invest around ₹5,500 crore in Uttar Pradesh in the next three years on setting up of greenfield units and its ancillaries, industry body BAI said.
The beer industry is "betting big" on Uttar Pradesh, said the Brewers' Association of India (BAI), while welcoming the new excise policy announced by the state government, termed it "progressive" and has a "well-balanced approach" for the growth of the industry.
"The beer industry and its ancillary industries will be investing ₹5,500 crore in the next three years," said BAI Director General Vinod Giri.
Elaborating the projects, he said work on two greenfield breweries costing around ₹1500 crore is already underway.
"Similarly, two major aluminium can production plants, which entail investment of ₹2,000 crore, are also in the pipeline, while a few glass production units worth ₹2,000 crore will also come up soon," Giri told PTI.

The Czech Republic: Breweries struggling to fill positions for brewmasters and technical staff
|
Czech breweries are struggling to fill positions for brewmasters and technical staff, Radio Prague International reported on February 24 citing the Czech Beer and Malt Association (Český svaz pivovarů a sladoven).
According to a recent survey of brewing schools and 15 breweries, the biggest shortages are among maintenance workers and mechanics, cited by 87 percent of respondents.
Technologists and machine operators are also in short supply.
While interest in brewing studies remains stable, many students are unaware they can specialise in beer production. Around 130 students enrol in related secondary programmes each year, with about 50 continuing at university level.
Growing automation has further increased demand for skilled technicians across the sector.

UK: Heineken UK is introducing brand-new version of Cruzcampo beer
|
Heineken UK is introducing a brand-new Cruzcampo variant called Sevilla Orange, Better Retailing reported on February 23.
Cruzcampo Sevilla Orange has a 3.3% ABV and will be available in convenience channels from this March in 4x440ml can format.
Since launching in August 2023, Cruzcampo now commands a 2.7% value share of the beer category. Alice Batsford, Cruzcampo senior brand manager said: “Shoppers are increasingly looking for premium lagers that deliver great quality while still offering value for money. |
The UK division of Asahi has commenced the rollout of two flavour variants from the 0%-ABV version of beer flagship Peroni Nastro Azzurro in the country, the Global Drinks Intel reported on February 23.
The duo, Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Limone di Sicilia and Arancia Rossa, are being positioned in the UK as “as a premium, stylish alternative to other alcohol-free beers”, according to Asahi UK, who is backing the release of the variants with a marketing spend in the region of GBP1m (US$1.3m). France: Heavy rains lead to worsening of winter grains condition, halt spring barley sowings
|
The condition of winter grains in top European Union producer France deteriorated and spring barley sowings came to a halt in the week to February 16 after heavy rains hit the western part of the country, farm office FranceAgriMer said on February 20.
The second ratings of French cereals after a winter pause were still far better than those recorded in the two previous years, when wet weather had also hurt sowings.
FranceAgriMer said 88percent of soft wheat crops were in good or excellent condition by February 16, down from 91percent the previous week and up from 74percent a year earlier.

UK: Suntory to combine teams at Islay whisky distilleries Bowmore and Laphroaig
|
Suntory Global Spirits will combine its operational teams at Islay whisky distilleries Bowmore and Laphroaig to a single team as part of long-term production planning, Drinks International reported on February 24.
The move is to ensure production is done in the most sustainable and efficient way in line with long‑term demand, as the company moves to a single operations team across the two distilleries.
The change reflects updated production needs and follows traditional seasonal operating models used across the Scotch industry, Suntory Global Spirits said.
The company has opened a voluntary redundancy programme for operational employees who feel that the new structure does not suit their individual needs, however there are no compulsory redundancies.
The adjustments are said to balance distillation with maturing inventory and protect the long‑term health of the brands.
Alistair Longwell, head of distilling and environment at Suntory Global Spirits, said: “Bowmore and Laphroaig are iconic Scotch whisky brands with exceptional heritage and craft, and they are long-term priorities for Suntory Global Spirits. As part of our commitment to producing whisky of the highest quality in a sustainable and efficient way, we are making operational adjustments on Islay to align production with long‑term demand.
