USA: Beer tax break for American brewers acts like a tariff on foreign-made beer
|
Support for a proposal to reduce the excise tax on American-made beer but not on foreign-made beer provides an interesting juxtaposition on the tariff debate, The Sentinel reported on March 24.
One of the main arguments against the United States imposing tariffs is that other countries retaliate with their own tariffs, which impacts exports of American-made goods. One could argue that reducing the excise tax on American-made beer is the same as imposing a tariff on foreign-made beer, but in this case, some American companies support the tariff-like legislation.
The Kansas excise tax on American-made beer and cereal malt beverages would be reduced from $0.18/gallon to $0.06/gallon under House Bill 2714, which was debated in the House Committee on Taxation. The gallonage tax of $0.18 would remain on foreign imports of the beverages.
Among supporters of the legislation was Adam Kazda with Anheuser-Busch, who saw the bill as “leveling the playing field” for American breweries:
“America’s beer production is shifting rapidly to Mexico. And with alarming consequences for our economy and communities. Over the last 20 years, the percentage of beer imported into America has more than doubled. Growing from 11% to 24%. Of those beers imported, 80% originated from Mexico, where beer is

India: Indian brewers warn of price increases as gas shortage drives up cost of glass bottles and delays aluminium imports
|
Global brewers operating in India are warning of price increases and supply disruptions as a shortage of gas due to the Iran war drives up the cost of glass bottles and shipping delays hit imports of aluminium needed by can makers, The Deccan Herald reported on March 24.
India is especially vulnerable to fuel availability as the world's fourth-largest importer of natural gas, relying heavily on the Middle East for shipments, sourcing about 40 per cent of its supply from Qatar.
Iranian attacks have partially disrupted Qatar's export capacity, tightening gas availability for Indian manufacturers.
The Brewers Association of India, representing global brewers Heineken, Anheuser-Busch InBev and Carlsberg told Reuters that glass bottle prices have surged around 20 per cent, paper carton rates have doubled as well as other packaging materials such as labels and tape.
Gas is essential to keeping furnaces and production lines running, and shortages have forced several glass bottle makers to partially or fully halt operations. Aluminium can suppliers have also warned of possible reductions just as India heads into its peak summer season, when beer sales typically rise.
"We are asking for price increases in the range of 12-15 per cent," the association's director general Vinod Giri told

South Korea: Korea's imports of Japanese beer hit an all-time high of 119.2 billion won
|
Driven by younger consumers who focus on what they buy rather than past grievances between Korea and Japan, Korea's imports of Japanese beer hit an all-time high of 119.2 billion won ($78.94 million) last year. The record surge suggests the 2019 ‘No Japan’ boycott has faded amid a thaw in relations and a sharp rise in tourism, the Korea Times reported on March 24.
The shift is evident at the retail level. When Sapporo Beer opened its first official outlet in Korea in Seongsu, eastern Seoul, last December, the venue was crowded with visitors. Younger consumers willingly paid 9,000 won for a glass — 30 to 60 percent higher than domestic options and nearly twice the price of some Korean beers.
"The foam is soft and the mouthfeel is different," a woman in her 30s who visited the store with a friend said.
A man in his 20s agreed, noting the appeal. "Japanese beer has a premium feel," he said. "When I want something different from what I usually drink, Japanese beer is my first choice."
The current boom stands in sharp contrast to recent years. In 2018, Japan exported 12.5 billion yen (about 118.2 billion won) worth of beer to Korea. Exports then

South Korea: Brewer Hite Jinro changing its head for the first time in 14 years
|
Hite Jinro is recovering its performance by changing its head for the first time in 14 years while improving its constitution, Maeil Business Newspaper reported on March 23.
Hite Jinro has reorganized its leadership by appointing Vice President Jang In-seop as its CEO at the end of last year. CEO Jang, who joined Jinro in 1995, is an "orthodox Hite Jinro Man" who has worked in key management departments such as strategy, law, policy, logistics, external cooperation, and communication. As he is evaluated as a management expert who has overseen finance and strategy, he has the task of showing performance through organizational stability and profitability improvement.
According to the industry, Hite Jinro's sales last year were KRW 2.4986 trillion and operating profit was KRW 172.1 billion, down 3.9% and 17.3% from the previous year, respectively. Hite Jinro, the No. 1 liquor market in Korea, failed to avoid the impact of slowing business conditions. Last year, the soju market remained overwhelmingly No. 1 with 69%, but the shrinking market itself led to a decline in performance. It is analyzed that high prices and economic downturn have reduced alcohol consumption and weakened excessive drinking culture as in the past.
The size of the domestic liquor
