Costa Rica: Heineken creates a Costa Rica operational unit
|
Heineken has created a Costa Rica operational unit that will act as a “regional hub” for the group’s activities in Central America, Global Drinks Intel reported on March 26.
The division, Heineken Costa Rica, employs 4,600 people and oversees four manufacturing plants and 13 distribution centres. A new logo for the entity was also unveiled this week (below).
The move follows Heineken’s acquisition of the retail, food and beverage operations of Florida Ice & Farm Company (FIFCO), which completed in January. Heineken Costa Rica will be headed up by MD Rolando Carvajal Bravo, the previous CEO of FIFCO.
The Amsterdam-headquartered group, which had been working with FIFCO in the region since 1986, first announced the US$3.2bn transaction in September last year. The purchase included FIFCO’s assets in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Mexico.
CEO Dolf van den Brink called the integration of FIFCO into the new Costa Rican division a “significant moment” that “marks the beginning of a new chapter for our presence in Central America”.
“We are excited to build the future of the business in the region together, connecting the strength of our global brands with the talent and potential of this market, inspired as well by its strong

Germany: Mauritius Brauerei files for insolvency
|
The Mauritius Brauerei in Zwickau has filed for insolvency, as confirmed by the local court in Chemnitz, which has initiated preliminary proceedings and appointed Henry Girbig as insolvency administrator. The brewery, which most recently produced around 250,000 hectolitres of beer annually, will continue operations for the time being while restructuring options are being explored, Inside.beer reported on March 18.
The company employs around 51 people, whose wages are secured through insolvency benefits for the coming months. Girbig emphasized that efforts are underway to stabilize the business and develop a sustainable restructuring plan, noting that the brewery still has a fundamentally viable core and support from key customers and suppliers.
The financial difficulties are attributed to a combination of macroeconomic and structural challenges. Rising costs for energy and raw materials have significantly increased pressure, while declining beer consumption has further weakened revenues. In Saxony alone, beer sales dropped by approximately 6.9% in the past year, reflecting a broader national decline of around 6%, the steepest since German reunification.
Industry representatives warn that breweries without a strong ownership structure are particularly vulnerable, as rising costs and declining consumption are eroding margins and putting increasing pressure on their financial stability. Other prominent examples of financial difficulties

USA: Boston Beer Company enters 2026 with a cautious tone
|
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. (SAM) has entered 2026 with a cautious tone as management signals that shipment and depletion trends may remain pressured in the near term. The company is navigating shifting consumer preferences across hard seltzers, flavored malt beverages and ready-to-drink offerings while also investing in innovation and brand support. With category competition intensifying and demand patterns normalizing after pandemic-era spikes, 2026 could represent a transitional period rather than a strong rebound year, Yahoo! Finance reported on March 26.
Management expects shipment and depletion volumes to be flat to down mid-single digits in 2026, reflecting ongoing softness across legacy brands and uneven category growth. Recent results already highlight the pressure, with depletions declining roughly 6% and shipments falling about 7.5% in the fourth quarter of 2025. At the same time, the company projected earnings per share in the range of $8.50 to $11, while factoring in $20 million to $30 million in tariff-related costs and increased brand investments. These figures suggest that while profitability may remain relatively resilient, volume recovery is likely to take time.
Looking ahead, 2026 may serve as a reset year focused on stabilizing volumes rather than delivering immediate growth. Success will likely depend on the performance

Ireland: Diageo gets permission to double brewing capacity at Kildare brewery
|
Kildare County Council has granted planning permission for plans by Guinness producer Diageo to double the brewing capacity at its brewery at Littleconnell, Co Kildare, The Irish Times reported on 25.
The extra investment, estimated at €259 million, will generate 800 to 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. The plan to boost the brewery’s capacity to 4.5 million hectolitres at the site will bring Diageo’s overall investment to an estimated €459 million.
There was no third party objection lodged against the planning application.
“We welcome the decision by Kildare County Council to grant planning permission for the planned expansion of our Littleconnell brewery in County Kildare, marking an important milestone for the project,” a Diageo spokeswoman said on March 25.
The plans for the 40-acre site at the IDA Newbridge Business and Technology Park at Littleconnell will include a 9,333sq m “Brewery 2″ building.
Construction work on the brewery at the site has been continuing since June 2024, and brewing at “Brewery 1″ is on schedule to start this year.
Diageo had already earmarked the Co Kildare brewery as a production hub for lager and ales, including Rockshore, Harp, Hop House 13, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny and Carlsberg.
The planned doubling of capacity will result in the plant becoming

UK: Suntory Global Spirits abandons plans to build new whisky maturation facility in East Ayrshire
|
Plans to build a controversial £150 million whisky maturation facility in East Ayrshire have been abandoned, STV News reported on March 26.
Suntory Global Spirits was granted permission last year to build the site at South Drumboy farm in Kilmarnock.
It followed Scottish Government ministers overruling environmental objections from people living and working near the site.
Beam-Suntory, the Japanese company which took over US whiskey giant Jim Beam, produces well-known whisky brands including Laphroaig, Bowmore, Auchentoshan, Teacher’s, Glen Garioch, Ardmore, and Ardray.
Suntory claimed the plant would have held up to half a million barrels of spirits at any one time and would bring around 45 jobs to the area.
The company has now confirmed it will not progress with the project and will instead be “redirecting investment to a local maturation facility”.
A Suntory Global Spirits spokesperson said: “Suntory Global Spirits is deeply committed to Scotland and the long-term success of our Scotch whisky brands.
“While we are no longer progressing with the Kingswell project, we are redirecting investment to a local maturation facility.
“Our investment in Scotland will continue as we remain focused on the long-term sustainability of our operations, brands and contribution to the economy.”
Objectors to the development had focused on the potential impact on
