Brewery news Canada: 2% tax hike on alcohol will worsen Canadians’ affordability challenges and cost jobs, critics say
An imminent 2% federal tax hike on alcohol is coming under fire from critics who say it will only worsen Canadians’ affordability challenges and cost jobs, the National Post reported on March 28.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates the 2% hike, taking effect April 1, 2026, will add about C$41 million in extra tax revenue to Ottawa’s coffers. The hike is expected to cost consumers roughly a few cents per drink or a few dollars per case, but the exact amount will depend on what you buy and how producers pass the tax on to consumers.

“Carney Liberals are increasing taxes on beer, wine, and spirits without a parliamentary vote on April 1,” Poilievre posted on X on Friday. “That means higher prices for workers and more costs for our local brewers, wineries, and distillers.”

First passed in the 2017 federal budget, notes the CTF, the alcohol “escalator tax” automatically increases excise taxes on beer, wine and spirits every year — without a vote in parliament.

The tax increase is tied to the Consumer Price Index and automatically goes up in line with inflation. In 2023, high inflation would have meant an almost 6.3 per cent increase but the federal government capped the increase ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany & China: Paulaner expands in China through strategic partnership with Tsingtao
Paulaner Brewery Group has entered into a long-term partnership with Chinese brewer Tsingtao to strengthen its presence in the Chinese market. The agreement includes the import and exclusive distribution of Paulaner “Münchner Hell” in China, as well as the local production of a new lager beer developed specifically for Chinese consumers. Production for all other markets will remain in Germany, FreshlyBottled.com reported on March 26.

To ensure consistent quality standards, Paulaner’s brewmasters will work closely with their counterparts at Tsingtao. The new lager, scheduled for launch in summer 2026, is designed to combine Munich brewing tradition with local consumer preferences and will be brewed using original German hops in accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law.

Paulaner described China as a key strategic market, highlighting its growth potential as the world’s largest beer market. The company already holds a strong position in the wheat beer segment and aims to further expand its footprint through the partnership.

Tsingtao, founded in 1903 and one of China’s largest and most established breweries, will support the collaboration with its local market expertise. Both companies have previously cooperated in the U.S. and Europe, and the expanded partnership is intended to build on this foundation.

Paulaner has operated its own entity ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: HiteJinro launches Terra Zero beer containing no alcohol, calories, sugar or additives
Major soju and beer company HiteJinro has strengthened its nonalcoholic lineup for growing “sober-curious” consumers by introducing a new version of its signature beer brand, Terra, the Korea Times reported on March 30.

According to the company on March 30, Terra Zero preserves the beer’s original malt flavor by using Australian malt extract while avoiding the fermentation process required to produce alcohol.

The company described Terra Zero as “real zero” because it contains no alcohol, calories, sugar or additives.

Terra Zero follows the launch of Hite Zero 0.00, which targets consumers interested in nonalcoholic beer. The company, however, distinguished the new label from its predecessor.

“While Hite Zero 0.00 set a standard for nonalcoholic beers by emphasizing health and functionality, Terra Zero targets consumers looking to enjoy the authentic, distinct flavor of beer. Terra Zero ventures beyond being a beer substitute,” the company said.

HiteJinro said it will bolster its leadership in the nonalcoholic beer market with Hite Zero 0.00 — the current market leader — and Terra Zero.

“Terra Zero is a strategic offering developed for consumers who seek satisfaction on par with beer in nonalcoholic beverages. Together with Hite Zero 0.00, we will further strengthen our influence in the nonalcoholic beer market with a ...More info on site

Brewery news Belgium: Duvel Moortgat expanding its range of alcohol-free beers
Belgium’s Duvel Moortgat Brewery is significantly expanding its range of alcohol-free beers with alcohol-free versions of beers La Chouffe and Vedett and is also introducing a Vedett energy drink, VRT News reported on March 31.

An alcohol-free Duvel is not yet in the pipeline, although this is not ruled out for the future, CEO Michel Moortgat said in an interview. There are no plans for price increases due to the spike in energy prices. Duvel Moortgat is the brewer behind Duvel beer as well as La Chouffe, Liefmans, Vedett and Het Bolleke. Until now, the range of alcohol-free beers has been rather limited, or they contained 0.4 per cent alcohol. Today low and alcohol-free beers account for 5 per cent of Duvel Moortgat’s turnover but the figure is growing 20 per cent annually.

“Like many breweries, we are increasingly focusing on non-alcoholic beers,” says Michel Moortgat. The new beers retain the classic brew taste with the same flavour-defining yeast. The beer is then vacuum-distilled to remove the alcohol. “This way, the beer is closer to the original. Zero per cent alcohol is also clearer for the consumer."

In the La Chouffe range, for example, the 0.4 per cent variant is being replaced ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Germany to scrap 'supervised drinking' of beer and wine from 14
Germany is set to scrap a decades-old law permitting 14- and 15-year-olds to legally drink alcohol in their parents' company, Yahoo! News reported on March 30.

A draft bill seen by dpa sets out to ban "supervised drinking" of beer and wine from the age of 14.

Germany has comparatively lax laws on underage drinking, with the consumption and purchase of beer, wine and sparkling wine legal from the age of 16.

The regulation on supervised drinking from the age of 14 dates back to 1952, but health ministers across Germany's states called for a ban last year due to the risk of addiction.

Youth Minister Karin Prien is including a repeal of the measure in her bill on child and youth welfare.

Supervised drinking "weakens the protection of young people from the dangers of alcohol abuse and thus contradicts the federal government’s objectives of better addiction prevention," the bill states.

It continues: “The exemption in the Youth Protection Act, which permits the consumption or purchase of alcoholic beverages by 14- and 15-year-olds accompanied by a person with parental responsibility, will be abolished.”

The draft bill is to be discussed with experts from industry associations and requires approval by the Cabinet and both houses of parliament. It ...More info on site

Brewery news India: United Breweries launches Kingfisher Smooth Strong Premium Beer in Maharashtra
United Breweries Limited has launched Kingfisher Smooth Strong Premium Beer in Maharashtra, expanding its presence in the mainstream strong beer segment ahead of the peak consumption season, TipRanks reported on March 31.

Initially available in Mumbai and Pune from March 31, 2026, the product will roll out across the state from April at multiple price points and pack sizes.

The variant, brewed with imported hops and no added sugar, targets consumers seeking a smoother yet strong beer, following positive responses in Rajasthan and Karnataka. By scaling Kingfisher Smooth in a high-growth market with a large retail footprint, UBL aims to deepen Kingfisher’s portfolio, broaden consumer choice within strong beer, and reinforce its competitive position in India’s key beer regions.

United Breweries Limited, headquartered in Bengaluru and part of the Heineken group, is India’s largest beer manufacturer with a portfolio spanning beer, packaged drinking water, soda, and non-alcoholic beverages. Its flagship Kingfisher range and international brands such as Heineken, Amstel, and Heineken 0.0 position the company strongly across mainstream, premium, and zero-alcohol segments in the domestic market.

Barley news Brazil: Barley production is growing in Brazil
Considered the main input of the brewing industry, barley has been recording consistent growth in Brazilian production in recent years, driven by investments in the field, technological advancement, and industrial expansion.

The movement occurs especially in the South region, particularly in Paraná, and gains strength due to the growing demand for malt.

However, changes in consumer behavior, especially among younger people, raise a warning for the future of the sector.

Currently, Brazil produces between 400,000 and 500,000 tons of barley per year, a number still insufficient to fully meet national demand.

Therefore, the country remains dependent on imports, especially to meet specific standards required by the brewing industry. Nevertheless, experts point out that the scenario is one of progress, albeit accompanied by caution.

The expansion of barley production in Brazil is directly linked to the strengthening of agribusiness and investment in research.

Paraná leads this growth, favored by ideal climatic conditions, suitable soil, and a strong cooperative organization.

In addition, the development of new varieties of the cereal has contributed to improving productivity and quality. This allows producers to achieve better results, even in a crop considered more technical.

In this context, agricultural cooperatives play a fundamental role. They provide technical support, encourage innovation, and ensure greater security ...More info on site
